We seem to frequently end up with wonderful sounding recipes here at NAVT and a while ago I started copying them. Unfortunately I didn't start soon enough. Anyhow, I am planning on putting together a Linen Ladies' Libations cookbook with whatever I have, plus whatever you all want to contribute. I will do it up so people can get it from me either in Microsoft Word or an Adobe PDF file. The PDF file will probably be fancier but in any case I am trying to do it so it will be simple for people to...

HI there. I bought a 300 year-old needlepoint piece as a gift for someone, and it has an old water stain on it that appears like a brown crescent. I am wondering what recommendations any one has for removing this. I am not interested in making the piece look spic-and-span. I just would like, if possible, to clean this stain and care for the piece in as archival a way as possible. Anyone?

I thought Chinese embroidery is famous and must be popular in US and European market for its beautiful handwork, but I found only a few Chinese embroidery items sold on Ebay. I'm wondering why. Can anybody give me some information? Have you seen Chinese embroidery before? Do you like that kind of style (painting, screen etc)? Your comment would be highly appreciated, thanks in advance

I've got a couple of tablecloths I need more info about before listing. The first is a beautiful lace and embroidered cloth done in alternating panels. The grapes are very raised in the embroidered design. It measures about 48" square. Is this what they would call a 5 o'clock cloth? The second is a beautiful, soft, cottony cloth with a raised design of nursery rhyme motifs. I've never seen anything like it. It has a name stamped underneath the edge that appears to be Clairborne or...

Hi All, I've these lace tablecloths from an estate, stored away in a cedar trunk. I've done some research on machine vs. needle lace vs bobbin lace-yet I am still not confident in my ability to discern the differences. I would like to review more reference web sites on the topic. I'd appreciate any links. I think this one is machine made...do you agree? And this one...? Do the loop ends indicate a needle/bobbin lace piece? Or is is simply a indication of the loom...

Hi. Appreciate any help or advice here. Is DMC cotton embroidery thread No. 4 still available, or maybe available only to foreign market? I checked the DMC site and found only Nos. 3 &5 available. I sent a question to DMC through the contact link, but it has been 12 days, and they haven't responded. I am thinking/hoping there is a knowledgeable person here who knows. Background- I have a needlepoint canvas purchased in Europe (France or Belgium) in the late 80's. I have...

These items came in a box lot from an auction house. The price tags are written in fountain pen and attached with small brass safety pins. I purchased the lot primarily for a few yards of black glass bead trim and was surprised to find these. Everything in the lot appears to be very old. The light colored trim on the card is not marked and I am wondering about this also. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Hello, Does anyone know what to call this? It feels like a cotton blend on the front but the back has a poylester ? facing. It measures about 44" wide and has very little stretch to it. Would the 1960's date be accurate ? I think I had a pant suit made of the same material back then. Any help appreciated ! Michelle Close up of the reverse side of the fabric.

So...I just happened to pass by an estate sale last week (i.e., I was within a 5-mile radius), and stopped in solely to look at what I recognized from the ad photos as framed Mola, the needlework indiginous to Panama and surrounding areas in South America. (How do I know this? Why, this board, of course!) The couple who's treasures were being sold had apparently lived in Panama, based on other items. I figured it might be my one-and-only chance to see "good" Mola examples. Sadly, they were...

This part is marked 121055 Simanco USA on the back, and the presser foot is marked 121241. I have two Singer books, 1948 and 1960, and I can't find the numbers in either book. The 1960 book is definitely not comprehensive, and the 1948 book may not be either. The thumb screw on the left moves the presser foot from side to side. The lever on the upper right moves the "gear" about one notch, but it's rather stiff. I havent tried this on my machine, but I think it may be part of...

Hi All, I've these adorable NEW vintage curtains in a cherry red print of fruits (cherries, strawberries, pears, apples) from the 40's. They were from an estate, all folded up and unused. One panel is wrinkled and has a small area near the top rod sleeve of dirt (from long term storage). I thought at first these were oil cloth, but upon close inspection and touch, they appear to be barkcloth (with the tell tale fat squiggly weave). I've seen the typical drapery barkcloth and had a skirt...

There was a lace discussion on here a week or so ago so I know you guys are expert. I've had this stuff packed away a long time. My mom & aunts used to do a lot of needlework in the 30s and 40s and I have a couple of trunks full of what I call 'soft' antiques. Let me just ask about a few items. This collar is about 9" wide. It is sewn together in the front and would go over the head. Is this called a lace cape type collar and is it really lace? Also, there is a hanky with wide lace...

Thanks for any help on this table cloth. I can't seem to find the correct site to identify the lace. Is it needle lace or bobbin lace? The tablecloth is banquet size and has a lot of hand work. The back still has threads that were never clipped by the maker, should i clip them or leave them alone? It's not unraveling, just anchored threads. Many thanks. Sandra I hope this picture is not too large.

I have been visiting NAVT for the last several weeks, reading the posts and sort of getting the feel of this board. Very friendly and supportive. Then I remembered that I have a piece of fabric that I retrieved from an estate about 15 years ago, and thought I'd ask about it here. The only thing to prove its age is a note attached that indicates that it is hand-woven linen and about 75 years old. So add the 15 years that have passed since I found it and 10 years in storage before THAT. At...

Hello, well as I mentioned in the title I am stumped. I have 10 yards of this fabric, it's a mid weight cotton. It almost feels like tablecloth fabric from the 40s/50s. It's 36"/37" inches wide and is probably a little more in the green family than my pictures may show. The leaves are dark green, and the clusters (grapes? some sort of flower?) are a lighter yellowish green. Anyway, sure would love some help because I can't even decide in which decade it belongs. Thanks for taking a...

I am hoping some of you can verify if the prints on these sunbonnet Sue blocks are feedsack, or dress yardage prints. Also, what decade, if possible.... The blocks are all hand sewn on point and measure approx. 12" square. I am confident the ground fabric is flour sacking- the stitch holes are visible. Just not knowledgeable enough to know if the prints are feedsack or dress prints. Just showing a sampling of prints from the set, can show more if that would help. Thanks very...

I'm anxious to get started on a new commission but am having a terrible time accumulating the fabric for it. I need about 50 charm squares, 4" or larger, of feedsack in prints with a COLORED (not white) background, all 40s or earlier (i.e., no chartreuse, grey, or otherwise obviously post-WWII colors/designs). All the charm lots I've found are at least 50% white-background and postwar, and I'd like to both keep to a reasonable budget and not expand my stash, which I'm trying to reduce. Does...

Hi I am back from scrounging in my storage area with some more things I have questions on and or want to show cause I know you love this stuff. These 3 pieces of vintage novelty fabric (about 1 yard ea) are kind of musty. I know washing is usually a no no as a lot like the original condition, but would a run through the dryer to freshen it hurt... still snowy here. I am trying desperately to downsize and have around 100 old Quilters Newsletter, Quilt World, and other quilting magazines that I really need to either offload on someone who could use them, or send out with the trash. I wanted to share Kate's appraisal with everyone that helped me find her. Here's the collar: Large collar. Handmade "modern scale" Point d Gaz Needlelace. The antique version of this type is smaller scale and more precisely made. The lace revivals of the early 19th century allowed different scale, different thread choices, and distinctly different choices of drafting. The construction details for your lace are inspired by the Handmade Belgian Point d Gaz Needlelace. See pics below of...
