Re: Mens "genuine reptile" shoes - which reptile?

Jan 28, 2010 8:21 AM
I am so sorry but they cannot be sold legally in the US or on ebay. They are sea turtle. It may be one of the reasons that they are not specifically labeled although they're older and I don't know when sea turtle was declared endangered and protected. I'm useless on dating classic men's shoes but I think it's a moot point here.

Oh my gosh - although I've seen many posts about endangered animals items, this is the first time I've owned something! There have been suggestions as to what to do that's constructive with furs, but what about shoes? Sea Turtle?!? Oh dear...

Oh man, would I love to have those for my personal collection. Not to sell (like my endangered furs that I remove from the market), but just for my collection. Also helps when you have the actual "real" skin for comparision IMO.

Drooling here!

Oh yes, sea turtle. I don't know what you can do with them except get rid of them.

You should strongly consider donating these to a Museum's Costume Collection, at least then you can get a tax deduction.

Contact the Bata Shoe Museum in Toronto. I am sure they would love to see images of the pieces, and if interested in them for their collection would be able to navigate the Customs and Import difficulties with CITES, etc. (Of course, being Canadian, they can't offer you a tax deduction for the donation.)

OP please call your local state wildlife and game office. I do not know the answer with any certainty but I believe that there are strict fineable restrictions on the interstate (let alone international) shipping of endangered species skins. You could end up with a major nightmare based on good intentions. I also could be wrong on another count and this is just an opinion based on a lifetime in the shoe business that is that there is nothing unusual about your shoes stylistically from a fashion footwear archival point of view. Your shoes are special because they are made of magnificent skins which are now restricted but I can't see them being of interest to a fashion museum although they may certainly be of interest to zoos, aquariums etc. some of whom do archive exotic skin items but again, you really need to contact your local wildlife and game office before considering doing anything. This is not something you want to decide by opinions from boardies. You need to find out the actual legal requirements of donation and shipping.

I wouldn't ship them to anyone until I found out. I hear prison isn't a pretty place and I don't think you have thousands of dollars to pay in fines either.

OP Please don''t misunderstand my intentions. I was not suggesting you ship these items anywhere without further research. I was merely stating that you should send pictures to the Bata as I believe they would be quite interested in knowing of the existence of the shoes.

That said, if the Bata where interested in the pieces for their collection, they would arrange the shipping requirements with full acknowledgement to Fish and Wildlife. Museums often loan materials that are on CITES internationally, the materials just have to be properly identified with all the proper paperwork and cleared with Fish and Wildlife before shipment.

There are also institutions in the US that would be interested in these. What I am sure of is you will be unable to sell them, as then you are dealing in banned goods.

Thank you to all - I'm sure we all agree that nobody around here is seeking any trouble, #1, but I do agree that they're great for study and perhaps historical insight... And no, I've never particularly liked black and white stripes. I also don't think I like bright orange with black writing.........................

Please do not ship these!! Mailing across the state can get you into major problems, regardless of whether you're selling. Listen to jsales.

And you would probably be the one to mail them out to someone and your package gets inspected for whatever reason. They are really cool though, aside from what they are. When we lived in Greece in the 70s, my folks bought a stuffed sea turtle and we used it as a footstool. When they got to the states, they eventually sold it to a neighbor friends and I was sad to see it go. It was really awesome and just gorgeous. But that was awhile ago so things have changed.

Kellie, everybody has posted good arguments for not sending, I think we should rethink you kind gift as I don't want to see you in the slammer either.

It was nice of you, but lets just forget about it and you can do as you wish with the shoes.

Thank you again for your thoughtful gesture, I sincerely appreciated your offer. Have a great day!
