Common Questions/Answers for Multi-variation Fixed Price Listings

Apr 20, 2009 12:01 PM
Hi everyone,

We're compiling many of the common questions and answers about several of the changes introduced in Stephanie’s Announcement last Tuesday. They'll be posted in threads like this one and tacked to the top of the board to make it easy to find information (instead of needing to comb through all the various discussions).

These are actual member questions and staff responses, with some slight cleanup to make them easier to read.

These questions all pertain to our Multi-variation Fixed Price listings scheduled to be available in Men's and Women's Shoes the week of June 15, and in other applicable Clothing, Shoes, & Accessories and Home & Garden categories in mid-July, scheduled to roll out to most buyers by mid-June.

Start using the format for your new listings as soon as it's available in your categories. Follow these best practices.

Thanks,

Cheryl

Re: Common Questions/Answers for Multi-variation Fixed Price Listings

Q:
I agree that this will be a great feature for many sellers! Is there a list of the Home and Garden categories that it will be available in July? I see that prices can vary in this format. Is that also true of the weight? We use the postal calculator and this would be a big benefit.

A:
We are still completing the details for the Home & Garden categories we will enable in July. We will announce those when the list is finalized.

Weight can vary across variations, but for our initial implementation weight variations are not integrated with the postal calculator. That means that you can have a "weight" variation detail, in addition to or as an alternative to details like color and size that we've used in our examples. However, those weight values are not visible to the postal calculator. Instead, when you list, you'll still need to enter a separate single weight in the data for the shipping method. Thus, for now, you'd be effectively limited to specifying the maximum of the variation weights for the calculator, which may be disadvantageous for you and your buyers. We recommend therefore that multi-variation listings be limited to products that can be reasonably shipped for the same cost for all variations (e.g., items that can be shipped for the same flat-rate or zone-based fees).

Q:
With this new rule Joe the tire store owner can list every tire he sells in 1 auction?
Mary the blouse sales lady can list every blouse in every color and size in 1 auction?
For either to have top ranking for visibility, they have to have great DSR, cheap price and cheap shipping?

A:
There are limitations on what can be combined in a multi-variation listing. In particular, different brands can't be combined in most cases. So if you are selling blouses you’ll want to combine the same brand & style of blouse into a single listing that has variations like color & size. A good rule of thumb is that the item description should only require very minor changes if variations were to be added or removed. If whole paragraphs would change in that case, then the different items shouldn't be combined. In practice, variations will be enforced by both software rules and policy. Listings that combine unlike items will be subject to the existing fee circumvention policy.

Best Match will work similarly for multi-variation listings as it does for existing fixed price listings, so yes it will factor in feedback, pricing, and recent sales. We’ll be launching multi-variation in Women’s & Men’s Shoes in mid-June & expanding into other Clothing, Shoes, & Accessories as well as Home & Garden categories later in the summer.

Q:
Re: Multi-variation Fixed Price listings
If you could please clarify, for those of us not selling brand new or hand crafted items...Would any of the following hypothetical examples apply/qualify for the MVFP, (with those of us selling vintage/collectible/antique goods in mind)?

1- I have 200 vintage TV Guide magazines.
All same title - different years & months - yes or no ?
2 - I have 20 old vintage photos.
All are of ships - yes or no?
3 - I have 50 vintage postcards, all of locations in Pennsylvania - yes or no?
4 - I have 30 antique medical books - all in the same genre - all antique, but different years - yes or no?
5 - I have 12 collectible pocket knives, all made by same company, but with different embellishments on them - yes or no?.
6 - I have 15 small vintage dolls, all same age & maker, but dressed in the costume for different countries - yes or no?
7 - I have 8 pieces of vintage Sarah Coventry jewelry - different pieces, but all vintage & same maker - yes or no?
8 - I have 2 dozen vintage Perry Mason paperback books, all different titles and years, but same author from same series - yes or no?
9 - I have 125 vintage matchbooks all with different hotel/motel logos - yes or no?
10 - i have 15 different vintage cereal premiums all from the same brand of cereal - yes or no?

A:
Our current plans are to launch multi-variation listings in Men's & Women's shoes in mid-June and later in the summer we'll launch the remaining Clothing, Shoes & Accessories as well as applicable Home & Garden categories. We currently do not have plans in 2009 to expand beyond these categories. I’ll reference guidance we posted earlier today as it would be important in your examples…a good rule of thumb is that the item description should only require very minor changes if variations were to be added or removed. If whole paragraphs would change in that case, then the different items shouldn't be combined. However, if we did expand multi-variation listings into Collectibles categories then a few of your examples would be acceptable candidates including 1, 3, 4, 5, 6, & 9.

Q:
And will it be available for stores? Remember, our listing prices are less, FVF is more. Yet the potential for sales is enormous.

I sell embroidered towels and my sales come mainly from the Collectibles category. I sell many more "sets" (the hand, bath, wash cloth ) on other sites because people can easily buy them. On eBay they have to "hunt" for these.

Also consider something as simple an envelopes for multi-variation. I recently wanted 3 sizes and had to hunt for each size even though they all were the same.

A:
Yes, multi-variation items can be used in Fixed Price and in Stores Inventory Format (Stores fixed price) in exactly the same way, as long as they are in one of the eBay categories we enable.

We are aware that multi-variation items could be used in many other categories, some of which have been identified by other posters here. While there is no detailed plan yet to enable other categories, we will consider that and announce details when we have definite plans.

Re: Common Questions/Answers for Multi-variation Fixed Price Listings

Q:
I believe currently this feature is going to be limited to shoes and clothing... someone with the same style of shoe in lots of different sizes, or someone with the same shirt in several colors or sizes.

Let's say for Mother's Day (next year) you want a t-shirt that says "very special mother". But you want it in pink and size 2xl. Currently on our website you can buy that shirt in one listing and get it done 2,100 different ways.... But on eBay you basically have to list 2,100 different listings of the exact same shirt. Today's announcement addresses that problem and makes shopping for shoes or clothing on eBay much, much easier. So by the holidays if you want a new decorative Christmas t-shirt you can log onto eBay, go to your favorite seller, pick your design and then simply pick your desired color and desired shirt size. Or if you need to buy a pair of shoes, now all you have to do is find the shoes of your choice and then select your size from a drop down box. Sellers no longer have to list dozens of different listings to sell the same item in different sizes! This is great for both buyers and sellers!

I'm sure there are other examples in which this new technology might be beneficial to other sellers, but the immediate plans, as I understand them, limit the drop down menu's to sizes and colors.

A:
Thanks again for your encouraging comment on the multi-variation listing enhancement. I do want to clarify a limitation however. Initially, each multi-variation listing will be limited to a maximum of 120 variations. That limit is not necessarily permanent and will be reviewed once we have more information about how sellers are using multiple variations.

While planning this enhancement, we did look at products like yours, which could in fact have many more than 120 variations. What we found in such cases is that there is usually a way to logically organize high numbers of variations across a number of multiple-variation listings. For example, for your t-shirts you might have design themes (traditional, funny, nature, ...) that appeal to different types buyers, where you'd have one theme per multi-variation item, with all the sizes and colors for that theme.

Q:
In response to the question... "But technically then, all those "your pick of any in the list below" type listings are NOT allowed for any but the "special" preferred categories?"

A:
We are not modifying the Choice Listing policy at this time. With the multi-variation project we are providing additional functionality to help sellers manage listings easier as well as for buyers to select their variation (i.e. size, color, etc) from the listing page.

Re: Common Questions/Answers for Multi-variation Fixed Price Listings

Q:
If I have a total of 5 DIFFERENT firefighter designs that I can place on 10 different colors of shirts and 12 different sizes... wouldn't doing all of this in ONE listing be considered fee circumvention? I mean, that really isn't the intent behind this is it? Or for example, Mother’s Day is coming up (of course this won't be live by then) but could a person now run a listing and entitle it something like "Mother’s Day t-shirts- your choice" and offer 10 different designs (buyers choice) on 10 different shirt colors (buyers choice) and 12 different sizes?

A:
We did want to clarify our last post using your example of 10 colors, 12 sizes, & 2 placements (front & back). In this scenario there would be 240 variations which would exceed our current 120 variation limit. I think there may have been some understandable confusion between the term variations & the values (color, size, etc) within the variation. In your example you’ll want to group similar variations together as Augy suggested such as children’s sizes in one listing & adult’s in another.

Q:
The picture given in the announcement shows 13 shirt colors and 10 sizes which would be 130 options. This apparently conflicts with the 120 max variations mentioned previously.
See picture.

A:
A seller carrying a product with 13 colors and 10 sizes doesn't necessarily have every size for every color, and therefore the example screen mockup is valid, assuming they have 120 or fewer color/size combinations in inventory. If they did have every combination, then yes there would be 130 variations, and they all could not be included in one listing due to the initial 120-variation limit.

The way this will work on the item page is that when the buyer selects a specific color via the color menu, then the menu for sizes will include only the sizes the seller included with the selected color. The layer on the search page shown in the mockup simply lists all the colors and sizes present in the listing, but not the specific combinations that are available.

There is however an inconsistency in the screen mockup in that it shows repeat values for colors and sizes. That's an error we didn't catch when the mockup was manually created. When I look at the actual pages for a multi-variation listing in our test environment, the colors and sizes are not repeated on the Search page layer.
