Photo are too small on new layout

Apr 15, 2009 9:14 AM
The new item layout, with photos appearing in an inset box that you can click to enlarge, is a major step backward -- the pictures, even when enlarged, are significantly smaller than under the old layout. Look at any of my auctions under the two formats and you'll see the difference. I rely on people being able to see the CDs they're bidding on, but they're too small to be readable under this new layout.

I note that the new FAQ encourages us to make sure we use pictures that are 1000 pixels wide -- for heaven's sake why, if what actually shows up when you click 'enlarge photo' is barely 400 pixels wide?

Please consider going back to the old system where the photo -- full size -- is included in the item description.

Thanks!

Could you point out one that is in the new format. I can't seem to find any.

My listings have a considerably larger picture and the large view is huge.

elecgreg,

Are you looking at the current View Item page when you look at your listings or the Preview version of the new View Item page?

To see the new View Item page, you choose one of your listings and then click the link that is at the upper right. The text of the link is: "Switch to the new version of this page." Click that and the new version of the page comes up. When the new version of the page comes up, you can click on the link below the listing's image that has the text "View larger picture." Then the image comes up with the larger picture.

As I mentioned in a separate thread on this question. my current very large pictures do not come up anywhere near as large after clicking on "View larger picture." on the new Preview View Item Page. On my original current View item page, they are indeed nice and large.

You have to be looking at the Preview of the New View Item page in order to determine if you're seeing how your listing will look. Or all your listings have to be seen in the version of the New View Item page. I don't know if how many Sellers, if any, are seeing their listings in the New View Item Page view.

The picture on the item page is 300 pixels on the longest side.

If you host your pictures with eBay, then we'll show an enlarged image up to 500 pixels (or 800 with supersize). Note, however, that this means if you provide an image that is only 301 pixels, then the "enlarged" image won't look bigger to the buyer.

If you host your pictures off of eBay, we put a cap on the image size in the enlarge layer for a consistent view. That's worked well for most images, but hasn't worked so well for large images that are large a reason such as showing detail. (vs. those that are just large because the seller's camera settings created very large pictures). Therefore, for those self-hosted pictures, we'll be making a change so that they open in an "enlarge window" that shows them in actual size.

In either case (on or off eBay hosting), we will continue to show larger pictures in a separate window rather than at the bottom of the page to help improve page-load time for the buyer.

elecgreg,

I looked at your listings. Your current listings are on the same View Item Page as my listings which are NOT the New View Item Page. It does look as though you have smaller items that do not require big images. But in order to see the New View Item Page that we will be switched to, you need to click the link on your listing that says, "Switch to the new version of this page."

ceril,

Thank you for your response.

Which leads me to another question. If we make our images 1000 pixels wide and self host, will they show up as 1000 pixels wide in the larger image view?

Also regarding height -- if we create images that are very tall, taller than 1000 pixels, will they show up at the size we create and then be scrollable up and down?

Ceril,

From your first answer, then I am concluding that I am not seeing the "true picture" in the current version of the Preview New Item Page? Is that correct?

Hi Ginny.

Correct. It looks like you are self-hosting your pictures. We currently scale that picture down, and that's what you currently see. We are working on a solution now that will show your picture in a separate window (not the layer we currently use). In that separate window, we'll show the real/actual size of your picture. If that is too big to fit in the window, the buyer can scroll to see all of it.

Ceril, any idea on whether this will be rolled out in the next few weeks... months... by the time the new format becomes the only format (this summer)?

Thanks very much for all the information you've given!

Thank you, Ceril, for the information. I feel relieved. It sounds as though everything should show up well when the new pages are instituted.

Thank YOU, Ginny, for bringing these questions up!

We're making the picture changes in response to feedback we've heard from sellers. We're encouraging sellers to look at their pages in the new design so we can be sure all is well before we launch.
