Ask a question link moved down on item page?

I Do Not think that moving the Ask a question link down on item page is a good idea. I like my customers to contact me with questions and it helps them develop a relationship with me. I would like the link to be prominent in the Top Rated seller box so that it is easy to ask a question. Also I purchase a lot and when I have a question I do not want to "hunt around " for the ask a question button.

Hi vpaul-1, The purpose of the move is to give a chance to the buyers to go though sellers listing description before asking a question. Even though the link is moving down it is not hidden from the buyers and will still be visible to them. So we see this as a win-win situation for both buyers and sellers where buyers get answers to their questions that are already on the listings page quickly (without having to wait for a response from the seller) and from sellers perspective they would not have to answer questions from buyers answers to which are already on the listings page. If the buyer is not able to find information on the listings page, they will always be able to click on the Ask a questions link at the bottom to contact the seller. Thanks, Shina

Can you at least make the link at the bottom of the page larger and more prominent? I see this change already on some pages and to me it can be easily overlooked and the buyer may not see the "Ask a question" link. I can see buyers scrolling through a listing and then missing the link.

If that is the case, then eBay should return the DESCRIPTION and the LARGE photos to the top of the listing page and move all that other carp below the fold. And put the ASQ buttom back Above the fold. YOUR staff has been very vocal about what WE have to put ABOVE the fold and yet you've moved all the important details below it and made the photographs of the items the size of pinpricks (or pointed heads). I'm also NOT a fan of this cockamamie idea. I understand the principle of this move, but I think it would be a page design feature that should be left up to the seller.
I have not minded getting questions from buyers even if the info was in the listing. I would rather they ask the question than give up in frustration and go to another site where it's easier to figure out how to get info from a seller.
I have found as both a seller and a buyer, that constant site changes reduce my desire to use a site, whether it eBay or another website. I question the sense of implementing this change prior to the holidays when seasonal buyers will be returning to the site and may become frustrated with eBay due to the changes and then go elsewhere to purchase.
Whenever I get surveyed by companies from whom I have purchased online, I am almost always asked to rank the "ease of using the site". To me, being able to quickly located the link to ASQ and shoot off an email is an essential design feature that makes a site "easy" to use.
This image shows what has happened to a few other sites traffic prior to the holidays and I think introducing a change like this prior to the holidays will contribute to a further decline in eBay's traffic at that time.

I am very upset about this move! I have found that the best way to judge how my auctions will end is by the number of questions I receive from my Collectors. It is a better indicator of a high ending price than either hits or watchers. Questions are essential for sellers of art, antiques or collectibles. Buyers will be very frustrated when they hit the question spot and get canned answers! Which sellers did you survey to arrive at this idea? I have yet to hear a seller say they were upset by questions about an item for sale. Can you, at least, give some of us the option of moving the Seller answer question to the top of our page. I thought ebay was trying to work with the smaller sellers? We could use some help, here.

Hi kjlyonsdesign, Thank you for your feedback. We are testing moving the link at the bottom of the page. The link is already being seen in this new position by about a quarter of buyers now. If it continues to be successful in reducing questions and setting the right buyer expectations upfront without negative impact on purchases, it will be launched for all buyers by the end of 2010 Thanks, Shina

How will reducing the ability of buyers to ask the seller questions improve the buyer's expectations? If a buyer has a question about an item wouldn't it be best if they can ask the seller directly and not get hit with a complicated canned ebay Q&A?

The reduction of questions is because buyers can't find the link anymore. If only sellers would write good descriptions, then I wouldn't have to ask Qs. Many don't list measurements, colors, dimensions, etc. Scrolling down is not my idea of a good experience. The sellers that want this are the mega sellers who get too many questions from pesky buyers and don't want to staff up to answer them. I have learned not to bother asking mega sellers Qs. I either buy or I don't, because their listings are usually all the information they have. This is true of a lot of retail sites as well. If QVC listing doesn't answer a particular inquiry, calling them will not get the answer either. So while this might help mega sellers in reducing unwanted Qs they cannot answer, it makes the rest of us buying from the smaller seller annoyed.

I AGREE with "give some of us the option of moving the Seller answer question to the top of our page" I would rather buy from a seller that answers my question and I welcome questions. This way the buyer knows there is a real person on the other end taking care of them.

Yes - hiding a buyer's ability to contact me is foolish, both before and after a purchase/winning bid. Post-purchase, is it better that the buyer just open a dispute to contact the seller? So that it will count against the seller?

We are not hiding the ability for buyers to contact you. The link is just repositioned to give buyers a chance to read your listings thoroughly so they have enough information to complete their purchase without waiting for a response from the seller. Of course Buyers still have the same ability to contact you as before and to ask as many questions as they like.

Is there a screenshot of where it will be? I know that no one at eBay thought the shipping information would be hidden when it was moved to be under a tab, but sure enough, lots and lots and lots and lots of people don't ever see it, now that it's there. All they see is what's at the top of the listing.

I've found that many newer buyers don't even know to scroll down the listing. eBay need a way to show buyers to scroll down. I get asked questions that are clearly stated in the listing, but if they don't know to scroll down, they won't know that ask seller is down there....and they'll just move on. Please figure a way to let buyers know to scroll down! Thanks!

"I've found that many newer buyers don't even know to scroll down the listing" Yes - thus in my mind, hidden. That's why I'm wondering if there's a screenshot so I can at least see what it will look like.

Oh - and we just had a brand new buyer who opened a PP dispute to email us. Just wanted to check on when the expected arrival of their item would be. They thought that's how you contact the seller. I wouldn't care, except now that's going to count against us under "Open Cases" or whatever it's called.

Let's see.. in this discussion board they admitted that the shipping information is not discoverable and the buyers are not reading the listing so they are putting the ASQ lower on the page to get them to read the listing Perhaps ebay needs to take another look at this newest page design.. It might just have some issues

I hate IT~! I myself read the description BEFORE asking a question, and if the answer is not there then and only then do I contact the seller. What would it hurt to have the link back where it was at the top as well as at the bottom of the page after the other questions asked? I always read through these as well before asking a question if they are shown on the listing. Or, better yet have the ASQ at the top and IF there are other questions asked then have it go to the bottom where the answers are, if there are no answers then go to the ASQ page. The sellers wonder why sales are down, it is all these changes that are making it more and more difficult for us buyers (see my post here on the search and new category flyouts associated with it!).
