Sellers not using feedback system fairly

I usually have a GREAT experience buying on EBAY. LOVE IT! But lately I've noticed a trend from sellers stating that they will only leave feedback for me once I leave positive feedback for them!!! I am ALWAYS fair and honest when leaving feedback. And I expect the same! The feedback they give me should be a rating of how I performed as a buyer. It shouldn't depend on what feedback I leave them, unless I have been dishonest or unfair. I have never even requested money back. I just leave an honest review of the item and seller's performance.

I am a regular buyer and seller and can understand why sellers may not want to leave feedback until the buyer does. Frankly, I do not know why buyers, myself included, should receive any feedback at all other than negative ( which sellers can no longer do! ). When you go to Wal Mart they don't compliment you at the register. The cashier doesn't say "oh, you did such a nice job swiping your debit card and all of the UPC bar codes were easy for me to scan!" If I did an excellent job with excellent customer service than say so. If I did a lousy job than say so. But don't expect me to say how wonderfully you paid! I do not request feedback, but, when selling, I typically do not leave it until the buyer does. About a year ago I sold an item to someone in Italy. ( I live on the east coast of the U.S. ) He waited seven days to pay. I shipped the item the same day that the payment finally arrived. When the item reached Italy ( 2 days later ) it was held by Italian Customs for three days. The buyer left me a two star rating for shipping speed!! He didn't even have the decency to ask me where his item was or find out for himself first!! In return I chose not to leave him any feedback at all. In my mind I was giving him all kinds of feedback! My philosophy: Buyers: tell everyone if you are satisfied. Sellers: say thank you if the buyers comments warrant it!

I leave feedback only when requested by the seller. Given the value of the feedback system to the sellers (minimal), I might leave feedback overall 2-3x a year and do up a couple three pages of generally positive feedback, but that's it. No time! (again, unless requested). http://www.chrisjuricich.com/eBay_pics/apic.JPG

Some sellers annoy you with demand for positive feedback and five stars because it may affect they search standing and some other aspects. Which I believe is wrong. If you have a good product and excellent service buyers will naturally reward you with good feedback. You find that annoying? I don't 'demand' positive feedback, but I do include small fliers which explain the DSR system and the feedback system and our hope that we're worthy of positive and five stars. Also a reminder to contact me directly if there is a problem BEFORE opening a dispute or leaving unfavorable feedback. Too many buyers don't seem to 'get' the DSR system, leaving 1s thinking they're positive, etc. Also, if someone dings me with a neg, it certainly makes me less motivated to fix it as I would had I been contacted before getting dinged. I would probably fix it anyway, despite the negative, because that's how I roll and that's how I have 4.9+ DSRs, occasional TRS status, and 99.9% positive feedback. http://www.chrisjuricich.com/eBay_pics/apic.JPG

I used to leave feedback only after being sure that the transaction was complete and that the buyer had received the item and was satisfied with it, thus leaving me a positive feedback. I changed that about 1 year ago and I'm not sure that I did the correct thins. Indeed, since then, I saw 1 buyer to whom I had left the only positive feedback he had received leaves to me a negative feedback, saying that he had not received the item, cancelling his payment (and as usual, PayPal refunded it to him (feedback: 1) and charged it to me (feedbacks arount 5300). So for buyer, feedbacks have not a great meaning as does the numbers of positive feedbacks you acquire with the years. And for PayPal, even a positive feedback received by a seller is not enough for thinking that the buyer, who later changed his mind about the payment, was in no way correct. So the PayPal assurance to buyers is untrue: the sellers are the real people who pay for this assurance... but when a company is greater than the Governements and able to oblige people not to use payment tools like cash, check or money order, we have to watch carefully their acts, like the addition of free galleries while at the same time they picked the same or a greater amount with higher fees when the items sell...

I just write them and let them know that I got the item, but because so many sellers are flakes they will need to leave feedback first. I wait for a week and if they don't bother I just leave a negative.

EBAY IS ONLY OUT TO PROTECT BUYERS!! HOW UNFAIR BECAUSE WE ARE THE BACKBONE OF THE BILLION DOLLAR BUSINESS THEY RUN! AND WHEN YOU TALK TO A REAL PERSON THAT PERSON IS THOUSANDS OF MILES AWAY IN ANOTHER COUNTRY! I AM SO SO SO SICK OF BUYERS NOT BEING A PART OF THE HONEST FEEDBACK LISTING PROTOCOL! WHY DO WE HAVE TO PUSH A POSITIVE BUTTON THEN HAVE TO WRITE THE UN-POSITIVE FEEDBACK THAT IS TRUE FOR THIS BUYER! WHY ARE WE THE ONLY ONES THAT ARE EFFECTED BY NEGATIVE RATING ON OUR FEEDBACK SCORE! WE HAVE TO UNITE AND MAKE EBAY UNDERSTAND THAT THIS IN NO FAIR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You are truly a good buyer. I am a seller on E-bay. We are suffering the E-bay unfair seller policy. 1) The seller cannot leave negative feedback to buyer, even they bid without payment. The seller lost listing fee and waist their time. 2) Buyer can complain the item and have full refund including shipping fee, But the poor seller still received a negative feedback which will impact the seller DSR rating. As a honest seller, e-bay charges us for almost 13% fee. And we got no service from E-Bay. 3) Contacting customer service is a horrible experience on E-Bay, No solution, hanging your calls, telling a lie. I don't believe this is fair to any honest seller.

For example... I sell stickers. Now if the auction states that the sticker is a certain size and the buyer.. although they pay immediately, leaves me negative feedback due to not reading the description and expected a bumper sticker size instead of a helmet sticker size I then have the opportunity to comment on my take on how they performed as an informed buyer if that makes sense. While I have never left a negative for anyone for not reading the description, it is the only event I could come up with as an example.

samlan wrote: Sellers should only be required to place any feedback at the time of shipping. By then they have their money and what else is there for them to feedback, they have a place to reply to negative feedback left about them. Ebay is letting them blackmail the buyer by letting them wait till they receive their feedback. Ebay has improved over the year greatly as the seller is not suppose to know how you replied as to the 5 areas communication, accuracy of description, shipping times etc. Also I would like to see stock photos banned and no ads accepted that do not list condition ( New in box, New in open box, Refurbished, store return, and used) at the top of the ad, some of these sellers would offer a virgin mother of 5 children. I only want to improve the buying experience for all and the biggest reason for people not buying is they are insecure because of mistrust of the sellers. I have only lost money on one transaction in 11yrs and it was less than $5 so I didn't try too hard to recover it and it was with a seller in Asia. Shipping charge is where I feel the buyer takes the biggest beating from some sellers, here again Ebay has made improvement once upon a time you could win the auction and then find out the shipping cost was totally unrealistic. I once refused to pay $ 25 to have an item that cost less than $10 to ship and was listed as Non-paying bidder and received a negative notice from Ebay with no recourse on my part, the seller had the only say in the matter, not the buyer. So over the years Ebay has made many improvements, but I would like to see something done to improve the sellers feedback and Ad photos and condition listing and if more buyers let them know how we feel I believe it will change for the best. I really like the " Free Shipping" and use it whenever possible, and yes I know I'm paying for the shipping, but I know how much up front and that I like. I have to agree with banning stock photos. I have bought things that weren't exactly as factory perfect as the photo... let the buyer be aware!

This is a problem. I will not leave feedback for a buyer until they've left feedback first-it's unfortunate but in lieu of what I have read - sellers have had really bad experiences, like what you've just described. This is not good and it leaves sellers very vulnerable to potentially damaging statements, which effect our ratings. I suppose that when sellers are given more leverage, hopefully things will change.

As a seller I can honestly say that I always used to leave feedback right after I shipped an item. My way of doing this has changed do to the fact that a few buyer's abuse the system. Recently, I had to deal with a buyer who accused me of fraud and then left me a negative feedback. I wish that I had not left him a positive feedback because I invited him back and I will not do business with him again. This is why sellers are hesitant to leave feedback right away because a few buyers have made us change our way of thinking. A buyer is always guaranteed a positive feedback, but unfairly a seller is not.
