About dividing betta tanks-I'm finding great success with a 'jar-in-a-jar' method. I have a fat 1 1/2 gallon jar that I've put a half gallon cylindrical jar into. I have an ivy rooted in the smaller inside jar and anacharis in the outer one. Both of my fish have separate environments that offer safe interaction, quiet places to rest, and a chance to interact often. Since the inside jar is slightly taller than the outer one, the water doesn't exchange, so if one fish gets sick, the other stays healthy, and they can even be treated without disturbing the environment. Hope this helps someone. PJ

itsjustmeagain, They do look like that, all very tiny. The more I clean them off the glass, the more that come back? Do they grow from the rocks? I had this tank set-up for 4 years and just now showing up.

Great stuff guys! I used to keep a 20 gallon tank years ago. I had it for about 10 years. I took a huge break from fish but recently got a betta splendens. Here's a couple pics.

what? fish are boring? NOT!
mine almost burned the house down! They are big gold severums & jumpy as all get out.

a few nights ago I could'nt sleep(thank heavens)
and I heard these loud noises like balloons popping.

went to check it out, thinking the neighbors were at their favorite hobby again,(making noise) & then thought it was the fish slamming themselves against the glass again.

I looked under the cabinet just in time to see the power strip smoking & getting ready to burst into flames!

turns out the fish had knocked the tube leading to the filter loose, causing it to leak all over the equipment & wires!

OK,you're turn!

I clean my tank every weekend, but still have a problem with worms. The aquarium guy i've talked to said they are harmless and caused by over feeding. I only feed what the fish will eat at the time, start with a little then add more as they eat it and scoop out anything that doesn't get eaten. I'm thinking its because half of what they eat comes out their gills. Oscars are pigs and messy eaters. Anyone have any suggestions on how to fix the problem?

___________________________________________

I am an antique dealer, however, I have studied aquatics for more than 10 years. I have had this problem with worms myself at one point. I could not get rid of them for the life of me. Some may be harmless, however, depending on the worms, it may be to late when you finally discover there potential. One of my 12" pacus died from a disfigured face from these worms. After this outbreak, I always keep a medication called Formulin on hand. I've also installed a UV (ultra-violet) sterilizer onto my filter line (I have a cansiter filter). Be EXTREMELY CAREFUL with Formulin, I have been burned by just a few drops of it. It is also illegal to use in California. Formulin is poisonous to certain fish, so read the bottle & do your own research. Oscars however, are not allergic to it. The UV sterilizer works by changing the molecular structure of parasites, worms, algae, and harmful bacterial & fungal matter causing it to stop reproducing and eventually die from the UV rays. This sterilizer is completely safe to use with all freshwater & saltwater life. Will not interfere with meds & vitamins that you may be administering at the time.
I now have not had any other problems with parasites or disease. Also I have never had any problems with algea either now. The UV sterilizer is definitely worth the investment.

All these items can be obtained via the internet, maybe a deal or two here on ebay.

Sorry for the lenghty post! Hope this will help.
