Stewie needs your prayers and good thoughts please sick cat :(

Nov 3, 2009 10:38 AM
Stewie is very sick and he is running out of time and I am running out of money.
Early Sept. Stewart (14 months old) seems like he is losing weight.
and looks like he is swallowing funny sometimes, like taking gulps.
Not so much when he is eating, just occasionally.
Take fecal in to test for worms-negative.
About a week later-I noticed he seems to be walking funny in his back legs.
Uh-oh...looking online sounds almost like FLV.
Take him to vet, does the FLV & FIV combo test-negative.
Does lot of blood work-chemistry panel, PCV .
She puts him on a clavamax.
4 days later, all his tests look good-liver, kidneys, etc all good.
Not anemic.
She (vet) asks alot of questions-did he get into any chemicals, etc. Any trauma to his body-Answer of course is no.
No diarrhea, no vomiting.
Meanwhile he is just getting weaker, thinner and falls over, cant walk very good at all.
She thought maybe Vestibular something or other-an inner ear thing but that usually goes away in a few days-he is going on 2 months.
Yesterday she tested for toxoplasmosis and put him on a different antibiotic- clindacure and anti inflammatory prednisone.
The results wont be in till thursday, but from what i read online about that-it doesnt seem like what is wrong with him.
He is too weak to fight me anymore with his medicine so he just takes it like a trooper.
Anybody have any ideas or experiences like this?
He doesnt seem like he is in pain but i know he is not doing good:(
He is such a sweetheart still purrs when I hold him, he eats but not much at all. I know his life sucks right now, he was a crazy happy go lucky boy before all this, he played like crazy.
Now not so good-cant stand to see him like this. All he can do is lay around.
I dont want to give up just yet, but i think the vet is running out of ideas on this, she has been researching- i believe she is trying.
Not sure when i should give up and let Stewie go across the bridge and feel good again.
I just love him so, he appeared at my house out of nowhere at around 6 weeks old, he is my best buddy, he loves kisses and snuggling in my hair. I hate to loose him but maybe he cant be healed. I just dont know.
Please say a prayer for him.

A suggestion that I just received, is that maybe you should try The Cornell 800 # listed here, for a consultation. They are highly respected; Link

Another suggestion that I received, was this; "But maybe FIP? Check his heart? Check for babesia? (tick-borne illness) Maybe it's a severe food allergy - he's not eating so everything else follows from that?"

Hugs and prayers for the poor little guy. I hope he can be turned around. It sounds very complicated and he certainly has had the tests I'd have recommended, so you can rule out FeLV, FIV and FIP.

A close examination of the oral cavity of the cat should be done (and probably has) to rule out feline stomatitis, which can cause pain on eating. Since he doesn't eat much and you mentioned gulping, I'd focus on oral cavity and digestive system, with perhaps x-rays to see if there is any kind of tumor, for instance. Exam for for possible causes for dysphasia (difficulty swallowing).

Try purchasing some Feline A/D from the vet. Make a soupy kind of slurry with warm water and feed him that. If he doesn't eat much, try syringe feeding him with the slurry. Pinch up his fur to see if he is dehydrated. If dehydrated he will need some sub-Q fluids.

One of my cats suffered a vestibular problem of no known origin. Vet put him on a "cocktail" of meds (which I think included Baytril) and he cleared up 98% from the falling over/wobbling.

If finances are becoming troublesome for this cat, use credit cards if necessary. Ask relatives for some financial contribution. See if the vet takes Carecredit and apply for that (no finance charges if you follow their rules). There are also some resources online for families needing veterinary financial assistance you can research.

Keep us posted, please.

youranjl , the most troubling thing that the op mentioned, is the weakness in the back legs. This would not be tied into stomatitis or not eating. I think that something vascular is going on..

somebody posted this list awhile back and I saved it so I don't know how current some is but thought maybe one might help

I also signed up for CareCredit and I am really pleased with them.

American Animal Hospital Association, AAHA Helping Pets Fund
Link Quote:
The heartbreak happens all too often, a pet owner is unable to afford treatment and their sick or injured companion animal pays the price. If the owner is elderly, disabled or on a fixed income, the cost of care may be too much of a stretch for their pocketbook. Perhaps they have been victimized by crime, property loss or a job layoff and are experiencing a temporary financial hardship" making it too difficult to afford pet care. And some animals, brought to clinics by Good Samaritans, don't have an owner to pay for treatment. Whatever the situation, the fact remains the same, when sick or injured animals are unable to receive veterinary care, they suffer. Through the AAHA Helping Pets Fund, veterinary care is possible for sick or injured pets even if they have been abandoned or if their owner is experiencing financial hardship.

Angels 4 Animals

Angels4Animals, a non-profit organization and a program of Inner Voice Community Services, has a mission to serve as the guardian angel of animals whose caretakers find themselves in difficult financial situations. At Angels4Animals we believe that animal owners should not have to say goodbye to the animals that they love. Our work is accomplished in conjunction with veterinary clinics across the country, eager to assist as many animals, and their owners, as possible. Our services range from financial aid to complete treatment to those pets and pet owners in need.

Our efforts focus on serving the elderly, the disabled, and the working poor. For lonely seniors, physically/mentally challenged individuals and children of working parents, pets represent much more than a diversion.

IMOM

Mission Statement: Helping people help pets. To better the lives of sick, injured and abused companion animals. We are dedicated to insure that no companion animal has to be euthanized simply because their caretaker is financially challenged.

The Pet Fund
Link Quote:
The Pet Fund is a registered 501©3 nonprofit association that provides financial assistance to owners of domestic animals who need urgent veterinary care. Often animals are put down or suffer needlessly because their owners cannot afford expensive surgery or emergency vet visits. Companion animal owners must often make the difficult decision to put an animal down or neglect urgent medical needs because of the costs involved. The purpose of the Pet Fund is to work towards a future where decisions about companion animal medical care need never be made on the basis of cost.

United Animal Nations

The mission of LifeLine is to help homeless or recently rescued animals suffering from life-threatening conditions that require specific and immediate emergency veterinary care. We strive to serve Good Samaritans and rescue groups who take in sick or injured animals. Hello all, Just got home from work.
Thank you all so much for the ideas and hugs and advice and prayers!!!!!

A few more things I forgot to mention earlier-
There is no coughing, sneezing or eye or nose discharge.
He doesnt seem to have a lack of appetite just does not eat much at all, when he does eat.
I have been feeding him the A/D from the vet and have been putting in a little warm water. I will try it with a syringe when he gets up, right now he is sleeping.
He did get filled up with fluids on monday at the vet.

his biggest problem seems to be the weak and wobbly legs, and very unbalanced.
But his first problem i noticed was him losing weight, then the swallowing funny, then the weak legs and unbalanced.
What they all have to do with each other, i just dont know.

I will look into the financial help online.
I'll ask her if she takes the care credit-she wasnt listed when i went to that website.

The vet did mention before but hasnt done it yet-sedating him and looking down his throat.
Think he is strong enough for that?
I guess the vet will know that.
I am supposed to call them thursday morning. I will probably be bringing him back in that day.
I just dont know how much more he can take.
Thank you all! and I will be copying everything down that comes from this post and give it to her.
Maybe she would call that Cornell #, since she can better explain what she has done.
Thanks again.

on the carecredit site you can do a refer a vet and they do the rest. None of the vets here were signed up with them and all I had to do was give them the name and address of the vets. 2 of the vets signed up.

Good, I will do that.

I just went and looked at him, he is lieing under my bed.
He did a big yawn and then 3 of those big gulp like movements.

please over look my spelling errors.

He needs water more than food. I would take my time and slowly get abit of water down him. May even feel good on his throat if something's wrong in there. Poor guy!

Did the vet check the throat real well? It really sounds like something is stuck.

baby dog sock coat smaller siggy size

Do I have to wear this?

the most troubling thing that the op mentioned, is the weakness in the back legs

Weight loss and back leg weakness is found in cats with diabetes. It doesn't matter how much they eat, they still lose weight. Was the kitty drinking a lot of water? Urinating more often that you noticed? Steroids, prednazone, is NOT recommended for cats with diabetes. Has the vet done a blood glucose reading?
