We are eBay Power Sellers and a retail music store that has sold brand new guitars on eBay since about 1999. The new rules require us to sell guitars factory sealed in a box in order to be considered new. NO RETAIL MUSIC STORE ON EARTH SELLS GUITARS THIS WAY!!! There can be a huge difference between identical models from the same manufacturer. Buyers want to see the actual guitar they are buying, not some generic factory catalog photo! They want to see the woodgrain patterns and they want to know how the playing action is including precise measurements. Each guitar among identical models are unique in these aspects. So when I have to resort to saying : "Hey Bidders - The new guitar you're bidding on in this sealed box could be pretty much like the one in the generic photo but may have totally different figuring in on all of the woodwork and may not play very smoothly. We have no idea because eBay won't let us open it, inspect it and set it up to play its best unless we sell it as used."
We will no longer sell new instruments on eBay when the changes take effect.
Remember back when eBay was fun and popular? Why does eBay consistently keep moving to put more burdens on sellers? I offered free shipping on all of my items for a long time until I noticed that my shipping cost rating was barely over 4 stars! In other words, even when it is free, a buyer can give you a low rating on what you charge for shipping. This is really getting to be too much and we will probably go with another site such as myGear or Gbase to sell on after June.

Hello oddioaudio,

Thanks for sharing your thoughts on the item condition values for guitars. This is excellent feedback. Based on the scenario you are describing, your guitars can definitely be categorized as new using the "new other (see details)" condition. We created this condition for situations just like yours where the item is brand new, but is no longer in its original packaging. Given that no retailer ever sells their guitar in the original packaging, your buyers will most likely feel that "new other (see details)" is the most accurate description for your products. You can also use the item description section to provide more details on its condition.

eBay,

Your problem in this area is that these alternate "New" conditions creates complication, and possibly even a stigma and lower sale prices, and it really doesn't solve any problem that couldn't be addressed in the marketplace by seller's accurately describing the item and it's packing and the buyers leaving appropriate DSRs.
