Longer Lasting Buy It Now - Now in more categories

Oct 11, 2007 4:38 PM
Hi everyone.

Hopefully you’ve been following along with our tests of a longer-lasting Buy It Now. As a quick review, here’s what we’re doing:

Over the years, we’ve routinely been asked why the Buy It Now option disappears from a listing when the first bid is placed. Our reason has been concern that it would create a confusing experience for a buyer, who could place a bid on an item, but then have someone Buy It Now (BIN) out from under them before the end of the auction.

That said, we’ve done some extensive research that suggests keeping the BIN option available on a listing longer will increase the chance that buyers win the item and that it will close at a higher price for the seller. As a result, we’re looking at ways to change how BIN works that balance both buyer and seller needs.

We started testing different rules for when the BIN option disappears, and started in the Parts & Accessories category in eBay Motors. To keep members informed as we tweaked the rules, we’ve been keeping a thread going on the eBay Motors board with updates. Since we are now expanding out to several more categories besides motors, we wanted to make this update thread more visible, and decided to move over here. We’ll come out here and update you whenever the BIN rules we’re testing change.

You can also check out a few details of some of the variations we’ve tested on the old thread here.

It seems like a good idea if the Buy Now feature had more options for the seller to control. Duration...Dollar limit....

As noted earlier in the thread, buyers weren't even able to figure out the original version.

I think this is a pathetic rule. I paid to have a Buy It Now option on my items and started the bidding at 99p.

Now because some idiot bid 99p on several items the money was wasted and buyers can no longer see the quite competetive price I had set.

It's a stupid rule, one that stops people buying my items early. It wont confuse anyone to sort. At the moment you're just wasting sellers money, which I suppose is why you have this rule in the first place.

"I lost a lot a money , ..."

at 5 cents or 10 cents per listing, if that's hurting you, this may not be the best place to sell your goods....

especially since the BIN only disappeared when you got a bid.......

There are 10 kinds of people: Those who understand Binary, and those who don't.

What was the best thing before sliced bread?

Why don't you just let the seller decide at what point BIN should disappear (if ever), and have a description next to the bid/buy it now prices?
Having BIN disappear after there is a bid is usually used by certain sellers trying to corner the market for their "buy it now only" items. They put in a low bid that is unlikely to win just to reduce the availability of BIN items, like hard drives and parts, that people tend to need ASAP.
The current situation means I won't pay for BIN listings at all, and realistically nor should any casual sellers.

I havent listed items on ebay in years and had no knowledge of the new BIN rules. I listed expensive items at a low starting bid unbeknownst to me and now it looks as though I am going to seriously lose some cash on my auctions. There should be a CLEAR warning about this on the listing page. if you click the tiny question mark a popup says:
You can set a price for a buyer to purchase your item right away. The Buy it Now option is available for a limited time.

What it SHOULD say is
You can set a price for a buyer to purchase your item right away. The Buy it Now that you PAID to have as a feature will disappear as soon as someone bids $2 on your $200 item. Sorry sucker.

I am extremely angry at ebay and I feel (among hundreds of other sellers) that this should be changed IMMEDIATELY. Why wouldn't ebay want sellers to be able to sell their goods at a reasonable cost? The final price percentages is a source of income for the website. Factoring this in, are they manipulating this feature to try to trick sellers? It feels that way to me.

I encourage you to share your experiences if they are similar to mine because ebay isn't going to change this (quickly) if we don't all start bitching about it.

I'm confused!? Which is it, because my listings do not have the BIN disappear. I like the rule, but I think it needs some more visibility. It's actually made me list MORE because the BIN option for clothing really moves the items. I hope something can be worked out, as for now, I just hope the longer lasting BIN option lasts my listings!!!

Ebay is turning into a government run organization, stupid rules design around the fact that people are stupid. The BUY IT NOW feature needs to remain PERMANENT on all items if the Seller so chooses. What is so freaking confusing about the words "Buy it Now". DUH?

I think what the last poster said is right. "Store" vendors are placing bids on items with lower BIN prices than their online stores using "new" ebay user accounts. This just happened to my cell phone auction. I was offering a used Verizon Voyager and the Buy it Now price was well below most of these "online stores" Buy it now price. Now I am most likely going to take a hit on the sale because I guarantee someone would have bought my phone. I will be lucky to get anywhere within $40 of BIN price. My auction ends in 3 days so I will be back to prove that Ebay is screwing average sellers in favor of their BIG online store vendors by instituting this bogus BIN policy.

They are making up the confusing excuse to institute a policy to their liking, not what is based on sound business principles and practices.

+1. When I am using Ebay as a Buyer, if I find the item I'm looking for, I'd like the opportunity to go ahead and acquire it then and there vs. 1) waiting for an auction to end, and 2) "losing" the item because more time=more bidders.

Similarly, as a Seller, keeping BIN available for the entire duration of the auction allows me to net a higher sale value, as well as offers me increased chance that the item actually sells.

In closing, although Ebay's system is based on an auction format, when we want to Buy or Sell something of interest to us, do we really prefer the auction format and "the wait"? - I think no. So allow Buyers the opportunity to buy now if they want the item (i.e. BIN for duiration fo auction), and they pay more accordingly for that opp. That's fair.

I think its ridiculous that BIN cancels.

THE AMERICAN SPIRIT:
BIN versus Auction captures the entire spirit of American capitalism. It's supply/demand. Those who really want it get it. You take your chances with an auction or if you really want it you pay the BIN price.

IF YOU WANT, THEN SPEND!
Most likely there are many similar products to purchase if someone looses the auction to a BIN. If there is only one product, or if they really really want it, then damn, its obvious that that bidder should fork out the cash for a BIN. Otherwise, potentially loose the auction and have to wait for another listing sometime in the future.

CASE IN POINT:
One of the other disgruntled users in this forum said, if he just spent "another $4" he would of would been able to BIN. But no, he lost the auction to a BIN. In his very own statement he admits that he should of spent the extra dollars because he really wanted the product. There's nothing eBay can do to curb frugal, or possibly stingy spending habits.

ITS ALL ABOUT NOW:
This doesn't even get into the convenience of using BIN to purchase today instead of 7 days later. BIN is super convenient.

IN CONCLUSION:
At very least, cancel BIN before the last couple hours of the heated auction time. The seller still has a chance to make more $$ from BIN, and the buyer still has a chance engage in a bidding war without interruption from BIN.

My 2 Cents,
Mardis

I love the buy it now feature, as a buyer and a seller. Many people do not ebay because they aren't able to dedicate lots of time to the process. I have ebayed (a little) over many years and use this feature the most. Am disappointed with the buy it now feature being removed after one bid of .99 on my item. I believe that if the buy it now that I pay for as a seller goes away after bid one, there should be MORE prompting to understand how the start price and reserve pricing plays a role in protecting the me as a seller, which is another charge that appears unconnected to the buy it now. and ebay suggests that some people dont bid on items that have a reserve or a start price- but doesn't mention much about how the seller may be out by following those tips. Just posted an expensive item and am unhappy that the buy it now feature price is gone after the first bid.
