OT-Thanksgiving for a Bargain?

Nov 6, 2009 7:39 AM
I know many of you folks are always looking for a bargain...

Starting today, Walmart Supercenters are selling Whole Turkeys for 40 cents/pound.

It probably is not a Butterball, but if you're a proficient cook, brand shouldn't matter.

I sincerely doubt that anyone is going to be able to beat that price this year.....

BTW, If you've been around these Boards for a while, you already know that I hate Walmart... However, at this price, I might go over there at 3 in the morning (It's easier to get a parking place then) and buy a dozen of the darned birds...... I'd never go to WM for just a $5 purchase!

I don't know about you folks, but I'm sure glad that the word "analgesic" doesn't mean what it looks like it might mean.....

good deal - even if you don't need for Thanksgiving put it in the freezer and use another time!

smoked turkey is the best. at 40 cent a pound, not a bad deal.

I usually get 2 a year from my employer, but this year, because Im on short term disability,I cant get one for turkey day. I think I still have last years turkeys though ( unless we smoked them? I cant remember now, guess Ill have to go dig in the bottom of the freezer )

If it's the brand I'm thinking of, there shouldn't be too much problems when you cook it anyway. We originally bought one when we first got a turkey fryer (no way was I going to spend all that money to test fry a turkey so we bought a cheap one). Didn't turn out bad at all.

Most of the stuff people worry about ain't never gonna happen anyway.

judge makes a good point.

Some of us--me included--Like to use a smoker, and don't necessarily wait until T'giving to cook a turkey.

My Smoker will easily handle 2 Turkeys at the same time, and it will cook 1 or 2 in the same time with almost no additional fuel necessary.

I can carve a turkey into quite a pile of sandwich meat.

Try going over to your local Deli & buying anything for 40 cents/pound.

No doubt.

We dont smoke ours, ourself, we take it to the butchers, but they only charge like 70cents a pound. Thats still below what most of the stores are charging for a regular turkey. Ive seen on average, about $1.20 to $1.30 a pound, and you still have to cook it. At $1.10, smoked, you can repack it into smaller packages, vacuum packed, and freeze it. You can have smoked turkey sandwiches for a long time. It is even good if you make a turkey with gravy over mashed potatoes. ( gosh, now Im making myself hungry :> )

I've bought Butterballs the last two years and absolutely HATED them - they smelled like some sort of wild game while they were cooking, NOT like turkeys, and both years I ended up throwing them away the day after Thanksgiving. Last year I bought a breast, which was expensive, so it hurt just that much more.

I'd be okay with the Walmart brand - if I could just get to Walmart. Think somebody could buy one and ship it to me? ROFL :)

Butter- I think that smell is related to all the hormones the Big Corporate Farmers add to the feed.

Brining before cooking really helps with this problem..

Hi - I normally only lurk on this board occasionally, but this thread caught my attention.

Just an idea - most grocery stores are running turkey loss leader promotions this time of year. Gas costs money, so my suggestion is to get the phone numbers of all your local grocery stores, including Walmart if they have a food section, and PHONE each store and ask if they have a turkey promotion. Then you can pick out the best deal.

One of our local grocery store ran a 10 cents a lb sale last year. Another ran a 79 cent a lb, and a third ran a buy one, get one free turkey sale (we bought 4, paid for only 2 and put all 4 in our drop freezer for summer BBQing.

My husband works in a supermarket, and he says they will be running loss leaders on most traditional thanksgiving items this year.

It pays to follow the loss leaders during tough economic times.

Another suggestion if you eat a lot of the same foods is that most grocery stores will give you a 10-15% discount if you buy a case of any one item. We buy yogurt, canned chili and frozen organic prepared meals this way and it saves a lot of money over the course of a year. They don't advertise this fact - you have to ASK.

Milk is a loss leader at a lot of gas station convenience stores - and you can freeze most types of milk (except skim - that is not recommended, but 1% and up is fine).

Hope this helps someone.

I was looking at that article earlier today. I think I can probably get a better price on the turkey from my local grocery store but I don't know about the other items.

I wonder how many sets they'll let you buyer at $20. It seems like a good deal to buy a set or two to donate to the local homeless shelter.

Thank you, Sojo! :)

I buy lots of yogurt; I think I'll ask my store.

I'm in a small town with one grocery store, and moved here shortly after Thanksgiving last year. When I came out to rent my apt, I noticed County Market's sign and they had a free turkey with purchase. I've been hoping they'd do that this year but haven't heard anything yet.

Thanks for all that helpful info. :)
