*** Pre-Announcement: Updates to eBay Emails***

Jul 20, 2005 11:21 AM

Hi everyone,

We’re shortly going to announce a few changes to some of our site emails that will take effect in the next few weeks. An expanded version of the Announcement Board post is below.

As noted in the post below, the “From” and “Subject” fields will be changing for some of the site emails.

We know that some members have set up rules in their own email client to filter emails dependant on these fields, so we’ve provided full and detailed information below about all emails that are changing, so that those rules can be updated as need be.

Best Regards,
Bradley

***Updates to eBay Emails***

In early August, we will be updating a number of our site and transactional emails. These emails will soon have a more consistent design intended to make it easier for you to quickly find the most important information.

In addition, these emails will now include a standard user greeting consisting of your first and last name and User ID. This should better help you determine whether an email is actually from eBay or not. Learn more about the user greeting.

Please note: the “From” and “Subject” fields in some of these emails are also changing slightly. If you have rules set up within your own email client to filter emails based on either the From or Subject fields, please the information below about which emails will be affected so you can update your rules.

The following emails are being updated:

  • End of Item (for Successful Buyers)

    • Consolidates the “End of Auction” and “End of Transaction” emails
    • Sender: “eBay” <endofitem@ebay.com>
    • Subject: You Won eBay Item: InsertItemTitleHere (InsertItemIDHere)

  • End of Item (for Unsuccessful Buyers)

    • Sender: “eBay” <endofitem@ebay.com>
    • Subject: eBay Item Not Won: InsertItemTitleHere (InsertItemIDHere)

  • End of Item (for Successful Sellers)

    • Consolidates the “End of Auction” and “End of Transaction” emails
    • Sender: “eBay” <endofitem@ebay.com>

  • End of Item (for Unsuccessful Sellers)

    • Sender: “eBay” <endofitem@ebay.com>

Please, please, please do not put my first and last name and my user ID, all 3 on emails to strangers. Sometimes a person wins an auction and then for some reason decides they have changed their minds and sometime they are real mad and then they HAVE MY REAL FULL NAME. This is not fair to us out here. We and we only should have the privilege to give out our real names to buyers that we feel are legitimate. We work hard to keep our names private and I beg you to not do this to us. You even said that it is not absolutely safe because others may stll be able to get this info from a source. Please reconsider because I have talked with so many other sellers that are against this new policy. Thanks so much for your time and consideration. God Bless

HI I toldly agree with you. I do not think our full name should be listed in the email. Our username would be enough information for the winning bidder. If they bid on the item with hopes of winning the auction, then seeing the UserId and name of item they have won, should be enough. I think that it should be a seller own choice as to how much information is provided in an email the winning bidder of any auction.

The way I understand it is that emails that are sent to me will include my details and emails sent to the buyers will include their details - in which case - no violations and it is a good thing.
Did I get it wrong or did you guys?

Your first/Last name is sent only to YOU

It's a way to confirm the the email is actually from Ebay.

Please reconsider giving out the sellers full name. I see no reason for a buyer to know the full name. I agree with the others that listed on this board that our name is private and giving it to the buyer invades our privacy. We don't get the buyers full details until payment is made so why do they need our information? Thanks

Would it be possible to mark success and unsuccessful "fixed" price auctions as well? If there is at least one sale, it would be very helpful to see that something sold from the title.

Pahoo has it correct in post #6, so - please - no more whining about names. I don't care if the buyer knows my name, in fact, I'd rather they did.

I always tell my buyers my name in all email correspondence, plus, it's on my shipping label which can't be printed without it because that's how it's set up with PP/Ebay/ USPS. I tried to replace my name with Vinyl Matters on my PP so when I went to print labels it would be there. Can't do it. Has to match CC. So buyer is going to have your name no matter what!

Buyers already get your first initial, last name, town & state anyway, so I don't see what the fuss is about. I believe a buyer or seller has every right to know the name of the person they are dealing with.

Hey, you guys are missing something:
Bid is a contract both sellers and buyers must disclose name and address for the transaction take effect.
ANY PAYMENT WILL HAVE OUR FULL NAME, no matter is Paypal, MO, Bidpay or check!
If Ebay email does not contain that data buyer will email us asking for and one way or another we have to disclose that, beside one more email to answer (I'm tired of increasing labor needed).
Think about it.
