An ounce of prevention.......
To protect your account from being hacked, there are a number of things that you can to do. First of all, change your password to one at least 7 characters long, with a mixture of letters and numbers, never any word that can be found in a dictionary. Secondly, make sure that your "hint" is something obscure that only you would know the answer to - never your mother's maiden name, the name of a pet, or anything that you have ever told or written to another person. Of course, do not use the "auto-complete" feature of a browser, nor leave your passwords written on a Post-it by your monitor.
Beware of email instructing you to go to a web page to "update" your eBay information. You can update all of your information using the links in My eBay and on the Site Map. You can also check your contact information and your account from My eBay and the Site Map links.
Ignore the links in any email of this kind. eBay will not ask you for sensitive personal information (such as your password, credit card and bank account numbers, Social Security Numbers, etc.) especially on in insecure web page. If you use your email address as your User ID, getting a User ID will eliminate some of this mail, and spam, too.
Check your computer. Run a virus check regularly, make sure your anti-virus program is updated regularly. Use the best firewall you can get. Do not allow anything access through your firewall unless you know what it is and why you want to let it through. Make sure there is no spy-ware installed on your machine that collects and reports your keystrokes.
Change the passwords on all of your on-line accounts regularly. Particularly your email accounts because anyone who can access your email can take over your eBay, Paypal, eBay payments accounts and any other accounts you use while on-line.
When you leave your computer, before shutting down, dump your cookies and clear your history and temporary internet files. If anyone has access to your computer, do this every time you leave the computer, even if only to get a drink of water.

eBay works hard to protect your information. Make sure that you are not letting someone get it from your computer or your desk.
If you have been the victim of an account takeover and your email has been compromised, and you have reported it on an eBay board, do not be surprised to find that your eBay account has been suspended. This is not a punitive step against you, but rather to keep the "hacker" from doing further damage before you can secure both your eBay account and your email. You will be contacted by SafeHarbor. It may take a day or two, please try to be patient.
If you might have had email correspondence with any other business, such as a credit card company, your bank, etc., and sensitive information may have been gleaned from this correspondence, contact that business as soon as possible to safeguard your accounts.
