Security Alert: If you have recieved email "from eBay"

Apr 10, 2003 11:47 PM
Hello everyone,

eBay has received reports of fraudulent spam emails targeting users whose user ID is an email address. These unauthorized emails claim to come from eBay (or now, Paypal) and may contain a link to a page that looks similar to a real eBay page.

The emails may claim that "eBay has lost your information," or "needs to verify your account" in an effort to induce users to give out their eBay password, credit card or other personal details.

eBay will never ask for your password or credit card in an email. Never give out personal information by clicking on a link in an email. Instead, go directly to www.eBay.com to update account information to ensure that your information is being securely processed by eBay.

If you suspect that you have received such an email, or believe you have given your account information to an unauthorized site, please report it to eBay by FORWARDING the entire email to spoof@ebay.com.

If you have been a victim of one of these scams, please read the following post to contact eBay. Please do not contact me directly since I cannot handle these matters and that will only delay resolution for you.

Katy

I was just scammed out of $3,000.00, I called my uncle who is in the FBI and he said scam reported from Ebay has been at a record goal. Ebay is sitting back still racking in the money, while people like me lose. The purchase form was exactly like Ebays. DO SOMTHING or close it down. My uncle also told me they scam you through Paypal too.

True about Paypal, I recently received a scam email claiming to be from Paypal to update my account.

The link in the email showed a paypal addy, but when I held the mouse pointer over the link (without clicking) the address link was directed to somewhere else, as far away from authentic Paypal web page as possible.

The scam email addy used the "google site" in its addy, but google said I can be sure it was not originated from their site and the originator was probably untraceable by using a "ghost email address".

ATTENTION!!! There is a new kind of spoof email that does NOT ask to update info. Instead, it appears to be a question from a seller asking whether you're still inbterested in an item. When you click to answer, it shows a sign-in screen. DO NOT SIGN IN!!! It is FAKE!!! This spoof looks much more legit than the other run-of-the-mill spoofs. It's very easy to fall for it, even if you know about the regular old "update info" spoof. BE CAREFUL!

There is also a paypal scam. It will read "receipt of your payment". The email says if this in unauthorized to click on a link. It looked just like the paypal home page. I clicked on the link. It asked for my name, bank account#, debit card # and password. I clicked on the "help" link and everything was written in Chinese. Figures!! Glad I didnt fall for it.

Well, as long as this has been resurrected.

If it came from ebay it would be in your "my messages" on your me page.

Never trust email coming from anybody...not just ebay. If you get an email from a business go directly to their web site and handle it. Never click on links in a letter.

If your friends send you attachments..especially forwarded ones....do not open then. It could be a virus.
The feedback system is only flawed by the people who mis-use it.

Thanks a lot.. I almost fell for this deal. I got a similiar email at my address and thought.. hmmm this is strange. I noticed that in the address window at the top was Link which clearly has nothing to do with EBAY. It would send information to whomever.

Thanks a million

There's also one that says you have an unpaid item strike filed against you for item # blah blah. If you disagree with this click on the link and sign on. Don't do that either. If you check out the item # you will see item not found. It's another spoof, make sure you forward it in. There's so many out there now.

Security Alert: If you have recieved email "from eBay"

I had this happen recently, the hackers redirected my e-mail so that I could not get an e-mail from e-bay. When I tried to log on to e-bay I found myself locked out, I then had to go on live chat to get some of this resolved. It appears that the hackers had listed many items from motorcycles to cars on my site.

My paypal account was compromised as well as my bank accounts and my credit cards. It has taken two weeks of absolute hassle to finally resolve this. Bank accounts, credit cards, loans changed, closed etc, and a monitoring service is now in effect.

Unfortunately I am have a trust issue with PayPal, I would love to contine buying using paypal, but I am afraid to put my credit card on file with PayPal or E-bay, or for anyone for that matter.
