Beanie Babies: Not worth anything

Beanie Babies: Not worth anything

I come across a video on MSN this morning titled "The Top 10 Signs You're a True '90s Kid" and one of the most interesting things about it concerned beanie babies. It was about all these kids collecting beanie babies thinking they'd be able to pay for their college by selling them like they'd be worth a lot. They are basically still waiting for them to be worth something.

So I'm wondering, have you ever sold or bought any beanie babies on here? How did that go for you? I was considering selling some but looked it up and realized they wouldn't sell and this video really sealed the deal and was amusing at the same time.

I swear someone posts about Beanie Babies at least once a week on this board, asking what they're worth and how to sell them. You are the first one to know right off the bat that (apparently with a few exceptions) they're pretty much worthless.

I read an article only a couple of days ago. It was an advice column and some old guy had spent $47,000 buying Franklin Mint gold and silver "collectible" coins over the years and was appalled to find out that their value is $2300. He didn't believe it because the FM had promoted them so heavily as a wonderful "investment." Surprise! Things bought to be collected do not have a future value.

It comes down to the old adage that we should buy what we like, not what we think might have a future value.

Yeah looking back I'm actually glad my mom didn't let me get tons of beanie babies. People definitely spent more on those than they will ever get for them, it's just sad.

My mom still thinks these plushies are collectible and she still wants me to keep the tags on them.  I don't have Beanie Babies, I don't think, but I have some of the bigger Ty bears and she thinks I should put them up as display pieces.  I don't keep my teddies as display pieces, I keep them to hug and love, and I hate tags on bears.  What should I do about that?

I too was dissappointed to find that after all the collecting I did & these furry & cute little creatures aren't worth anything now. I found that out the hard way too when a couple of years ago, I couldn't sell them at a garage sale I had. I couldn't even give them away. I had 1 person buy what I thought was 1 of the rabbits, but it turned out to be 1 of those little stuffed animals that you get in an already made Easter Basket.More disappointment. Oh well! We live & learn & since then I have been doing what someone else wrote & I only purchase what I like not what I think might be worth something later on.We won't find out what they're really worth unil we're all gone & the landfills are full of Beanie Babies. Maybe they will be good for sucking up some of the toxins from the earth & save us all. One can dream right. LOL!

With the fall of the collectible drive in the late 90's, I think we all got a bunch of these, new w. tag. I had a bunch that I used to barter different things for, so I didn't make a big investment. I managed to donate them before Christmas to an elderly care facility and got to right off the retail price of $6-10 each for them. The Alzheimer's patients loved getting a free little animal as a present and I had taken something I couldn't sell, kept the cute ones for when kids come to visit, and the multiples I received the write off for. Another way to get paid for something that won't sell after the trend is over!
