Re: Bear Quilts

I'm going to try doing these as thumbnails, so the thread will load, but you can click on an individual thumbnail to get an up-close view of the image.

First is a baby quilt I did for a co-worker. The block is Antique Tile (probably from the 20s or 30s), and it is a bear playing with a white kitten.

Then the next one is a Fancy Flywheels block that I got from a book, but I think that is a very old block (maybe from the mid or late 1800s?). I made that for a co-worker who wanted to give it to someone in the hospital. This one is brown and black bears in the forest.

Finally is one I just finished, using a traditional block called Swappers' Star. I had to draft this block, as it was supposed to be a 9" block but I needed it to be a 12" block. You use graph paper and enlarge the pattern. The fabric is bears catching salmon in a stream and most of the fabric is batik (a hand painted fabric).

Hah, I previewed that and I was afraid the thumbnails wouldn't appear, but I thought I'd try it anyway. If you click on the link, all you get is the thumbnails. Will try this again.

This should be a clickable thumbnail of the Antique Tile quilt:

Then this is the Fancy Flywheels Quilt:

Finally, this is the Swappers Star quilt:

They are lovely. I am super impressed as I have tried crochet and had to give up as I just can't maintain the same tension.

Thanks, Nancy. Crocheting is one of those things that takes practice, too. You could try Granny Squares. Make a bunch of those and sew them together into an afghan and it wouldn't matter if some were a little looser and others were a little tighter (you'd arrange them so they'd fit together okay). That might be a good first project that would help you get the hang of things.

Thanks, Red. Yeah, I just give them away. I enjoy making them so I'll make 'em even though I can't make any money at them--I give them as Christmas gifts and so on. A few times people have seen me working on one and asked me if I would make one for them (that they would pay for), and despite the fact that it takes about $50 in materials and 100 hours of work, their attitude is that I should charge as if they were from Walmart, $35 or so. It shouldn't surprise me, as home made clothing as gone in the same direction. My mother used to make my clothes because it was cheaper than store bought, but nowadays after you pay for the pattern and fabric, it's more expensive than off the rack (even before you figure the effort that goes into it).

I'd be willing to bet if any of those people wanting to buy your quilt(s) for Walmart prices actually attempted to make one themselves., ... they'd "get it". LOL. I recall small quilts like yours selling for the same price as the larger "human" antique quilts. JMO, ...making "in miniature" items is harder than making larger versions. I learned the hard way. I started out making miniature teddies. LOL...I had the Walmart mentality. Smaller = less time consuming and easier to make.....Uhmmmm, not. ( - : ~

Frodo, maybe you can try putting one up on Ebay, with a reserve just to see what happends.
Were in Amish land over here and their quilts sell for $600 to up in the thousands, i thought that was insane, but now that i see all the hard work involved and it all makes sense.
I know what you mean about the cost, it cost around $50 to make a bear also, if done in Mohair, and all the hard work involved, i wonder if i would even make 10 bucks profit on a bear, not worth it, i'd rather keep them. I may try one day listing one just out of curiosity though :^O
