Old bear at estate sale

Old bear at estate sale

This old bear is being sold at a local estate sale.  I fell in love with him for whatever reason, but I'm worried that he might be priced a bit high. As you can see, he has some condition issues (though I think he has so much character!) I was wondering if anyone can tell me something about him?  Even though I love him, I don't want to pay above-market for him. I'm thinking of making an offer, but I don't know what would be fair, since I have no clue about manufacturer or era. Thanks so much!

I can't find a match in my bear books, although he shares some characteristics with some bears. I'll take a guess and say he is German, 1930s, out of the Sonneberg area. A number of bear makers operated out of there. Possibly he had reddish glass eyes. It's hard to put a value on him since I'm unsure, but if I was looking at him for me, I'd speculate he might be a $600 bear. But I wouldn't pay that necessarily. Since you love him, make a decent offer on him because if you pass him up, you'll probably always regret it. I'm sorry I can't be a lot of help on him.

Hi Frodo, Thanks so much for taking the time to try to match the bear in your books and for the great info.  Your assessment made me feel a lot more confident making an offer, so I called up today and my offer was accepted!  I'm very excited that I'll be picking him up tomorrow and bringing him home with me :-x

You are so generous to share your knowledge with everyone here! Not too long ago I purchased an old mohair dog puppet that I've been meaning to post a photo of here and would love to get your opinion on if you don't mind.

I may send some photos of my new bear to Ken Yenke out of curiosity, and if I do I will be sure to share the info with you. Since this is my third older bear, I guess that I now qualify as an old bear collector!  Thanks again!

You're welcome, and yes, you are now an antique bear collector!

I would love to see the puppet.

Oh, and congratulations on your new addition to your collection.

Have anyone here any knowlage of Ino Schaller, German made paper mache' Bear. Seem to be having a hard time finding any information. Find lots of Christmas and other holiday items.

 Hope someone has some ideas.
