Who Made This Big Bad Wolf Hand Puppet?

Any suggestions as to who made the wolf hand puppet? Both hand puppets are mohair. The puppet next to the Wolf is called Sooty. Sooty was based on a British TV character if I remember correctly. Sooty has a seam tag that reads, .. Chad Valley Toy Company.

My impression is the wolf puppet is from the Little Red Riding Hood story. He certainly looks menacing enough to eat grandma for dinner! :O Mr. Wolf has glass eyes and a black floss nose made with vertical stitches.Teeth and tongue are wool felt.

He is beautiful. I think he's German or Austrian. A company like Steiff would have sewn the teeth in completely differently, as you know. But look at the expressiveness and the lovely long mohair. I thought Austrian and "Fechter" as soon as I looked at him. But his nose is not a shield-shape (although they didn't always sew their noses in that way) and I can't find a picture of one of their bears with long silky mohair. Fechter, Hermann, Grisly and Diem all occasionally used black thread to partially outline open mouths. He is obviously not Diem or Grisly. Really, the only thing that keeps me from thinking Hermann or Anker is the eye color, but just because they used reddish brown for bear eyes doesn't mean they did that for other critters.

I have an Anker bull complete with his tags and he has the roll-around eyes so that just goes to show the eyes could vary.

Because of the beautiful mohair, I wonder if he isn't Hermann.

Gosh Frodo, I think your on to something there!! I went and grabbed my Teddy Bear Encyclopedia and looked at the Fechter and Hermann sections.

The wolf's mohair does look a lot like the type and color of mohair that Hermann used. I noticed both Fechter and Hermann outlined the mouths on some of their bears, ..as you mentioned. Hmmmmm, if I had to choose between Fechter and Hermann, ...I think Hermann wins!!

Thank you for your insight!!

Hawesbear, ... don't know why the attachment won't open up for you. I can send you a picture via email if you'd like. Do photo bucket links work here??

I have a Hermann reference book and a Merrythought book - went through them both but didn't find anything close to it.  Perhaps another  English company like Chad Valley?

I mean the wolf puppet of course - any chance they were made by the same company?  Did they come together - found at the same place or separate acquisitions?

Oh MY!! Mystery solved!!

Thank you for your assistance Beth & Frodo.

I was making a small neck repair in Mr. Wolf just a moment ago. A thread holding his neck and torso together had come loose so I was closing up this tiny gap and felt something hard along a side seam in his torso. ;\

Low and behold I discovered a tiny rectangular metal tag with the words KERSA MADE IN GERMANY! :-D His mohair is so long I didn't even see this tag until this morning.

I don't know much about Kersa but recall seeing mohair cats made by this company. I mostly collect old dolls now & my 'mohair toy' knowledge is pretty rusty these days. Well, I'm off to go research the history of Kersa!!

He's stunning, and that's awesome, that he has his id!

Great find!
