***Protect Yourself from Spoof Emails***

Feb 3, 2005 12:08 PM
Hi everyone,

We've had multiple threads about spoof emails tacked to the top of this board for awhile, so I've consolidated the information into this one thread.

Background
Spoof emails are emails that claim to be from a company (such as eBay) that typically ask you to provide personal information like passwords, bank account info, credit card information, etc. They can look just like a real email from that company, using the same language, logos, etc, and even have a reasonable "From" address (for example: members@ebay.com). But they're actually sent from fraudsters who've created this fake email (even the "From" address can be faked) so they can try to acquire your personal information to use themselves later.

How you can protect yourself
-NEVER give out personal information in an email.
-If an email supposedly from eBay asks for any of this information, or looks even the slightest bit suspicious, forward it to spoof@ebay.com or spoof@paypal.com. We'll check it out and let you know whether it's real or not (and that also helps us shut these people down).
-Check out the resources below.

Resources
Make sure you review eBay's spoof tutorial here: Link

eBay's Security Center also has good information: Link

Member ol_grandad also recommends this site for more information: Link

And of course, email anything the least bit suspicious to spoof@ebay.com or spoof@paypal.com.

Attempting to find real help on eBay instead of canned responses is worst than looking for a needle in a haystack! How can eBay continue to allow a seller (jennifer1798) to resell the same car after they have been put on notice that I had bought it? EBay received a "featured listing" fee and got their money regardless of whether a customer was defrauded or not! The ease with which eBay makes its site and marketing tools available to scam artists puts eBay right in bed with the con artists, the scams & the fraud that they are stopped to be helping to eliminate. No one can find all this "good help" on the eBay sites; it is one big confusing jumble. The more complex and the more info that is out there, the more likely it is that the common guy will not read it because it all sounds alike. Trying to send eBay an email is almost impossible. And phone numbers are not posted any where. I have been cheated out of more than $5k and I am not about to sit back and take it. I will continue to try to get my money. Why did they not suspend the relisting auction? If eBay was really looking after its members, they would have acted to do so until this matter was resolved.

I see where you bought a bunch of Fords in the last 30 days:

Link

But, I don't see this seller listed. Is it one of the ones on this list but a different seller ID? Or was it longer ago than 30 days?

I either bid on those cars but only bought one and it is not listed. I bought item # 4560085415 from jennifer1798 on July 6, 2005. She resold the car on July 19, 2005 as item # 4561822480.

Hi all,

I learned my lesson the hard way when I followed one of those links and gave my information. Don't Do It!

When I had Juno, it got hundreds of spoofs a month and more spam than Hormel. I dumped Juno and went to Verizon DSL (not an ad for them) but now I NEVER get spam or spoofs.

One thing I did after I got tricked was to forward the spoofs to not only ebay and paypal, but to the FBI's internet crime task force. They know how to back track these and take action.

I just love this one liner in the latest phishing email I got this morning. It had all the typical stuff, bad contact info, suspension...yada, yada, etc.

This is the killer line. I spaced out the link so folks would NOT link to it. Duh.

Sing to your eBay account at:
http: //signin.ebay.com / aw-cgi/ eBay ISAPI.dll?SignIn&ssPageName=h:h:sin:US

"Sing to your account"! LOL

Hey everyone, protect yourself against scams. I almost became a victim. Someone E-Mailed me a "2nd Chance Offer" & instructed me to contact them at this certain E-Mail address so I re-entered the item, sent an E-Mail under "Contact the buyer" & a reply came back that he never sent it. I was deliberately outbidded on the item so someone could try to play me for a sucker. Turns out the winning bidder was bogus & my contact with the seller proved both protective & I got the item anyway as a REAL "2nd chance offer" through eBay. Another scam was I was trying to sell a SchoolBus & I was contacted via E-Mail & wanted to ship to South Korea & asked if I had a problem with that. They were going to send me a check for $7K, $2K for the Bus & the remainder was to be paid to a shipping agent. Never came through, it was bogus. Be careful & be wise & you will enjoy our eBay. Report ALL potential scams to eBay.

I also have been getting the emails. Most of these offer me jobs with ebey. Which seem to good to be true. I am not sure this, but I feel that ebay is not oftering jobs in email.

Yep, I think we're all getting these. My latest ones are the "i've been trying to contact you, you bid on this item, now I want you to pay" sort of line. Of course they're sent this to my selling ID and not my buying ID and its coming straight in to my email account and not my My Ebay Messages file. Soooo...I just forward to spoof@... and hope for the best. Good luck! And be suspicious! :-D LOL

"Just today I received an email from "ebay" saying the bid I had placed on a particular item had been cancelled. It allowed me to link to the item and also the reason as to why it was cancelled. Of course, I didn't go through the link. I went to the ebay site and put in the number of the item in the Advanced Search and found out it was a legitimate item, but I had not even placed the bid on the item!"

This is exactly the same thing I've been receiving!

I too put the auction # in Search and sure enough, it was a genuine listing.

I've been receiving claims of non-payment for auctions I've never seen or bid on; from a trickster incapable of correct English Usage: "You bidded on my auction."

I RECEIVE ANYWHERE FROM 4-15 SPOOF E-MAILS A DAY CLAIMING TO BE FROM E-BAY OR PAYPAL. I THINK THE RECORD IS 27 IN ONE DAY. I FORWARD MOST OF THEM TO SPOOF@EBAY.COM OR SPOOF@PAYPAL.COM. MY QUESTION IS, IS THERE ANY REASON I GET THIS MANY OR AM I JUST LUCKEY. I DON'T EVER GO THRU OR REPLY TO THEM BUT I WOULD LOVE TO COME UP WITH A RETURNABLE E-MAIL THAT WOULD REALLY SCREW THESE AS-HOLES UP
