Would you want them to tell everyone your high bid?

if you bid what you are willing to pay for the item instead of nibbling at someone else's bid, you won't have that problem

The work force is disgusted, downs tools and walks
Innocence is injured experience just talks
Everyone seeks damages and everyone agrees
That these are classic symptoms of a monetary squeeze
On PSU and auctionbytes they talk about the curse
Meg Whitman was useless, John Donohoe is worse

Just place your maximum proxy bid, the absolute MOST you would be willing to spend on the item, ONCE during the auction, preferably as late as possible. Then you don't have to bother placing any more bids. If you get outbid, that just means someone else was willing to spend more than you.

It doesn't make any sense to bid "again and again".

Re: Why can't eBay post min bid you need to be high bidder?

That's how Ebay proxy bids work.

If you were a seller and you started an auction at a price of $9.99 and bidder A comes along and makes opening bid but puts a proxy bid of $1,000.00 on it, then bidder B comes along and looks and sees bidderA has a $1,000.00 bid, you think they will bid. The seller will no longer be able to sell anything except for opening bids. Then Ebay should go to fixed price only.

But if Bidder A bids $9.99 with a proxy of $1,000.00 on it but unknown to the public, then bidder B comes along they will bid what it is worth to them(if they know how to work eBay proxy bidding correctly), The price will go up. That makes sellers happy and ebay happy.

Or take the same scenario above with bidder A and take a bidder B that doesn't know how ebay proxy bid works and bids one bid increments after another only upsets and frustrates Bidder B but still makes seller and ebay happy.

Best solution Bid once, your true maximum, if outbid move to next one, If high congratulations.

MAX being the most operative term in this circumstance...

Yes. I don't see why they should have to keep guessing.

Bidding isn't a guessing game. You don't bid to guess the amount needed to outbid someone else's maximum proxy bid. You place your bid according to what YOU think YOU want to pay for the item. Pretend the other bidders aren't there.

How did you get over 200 feedback and be a member since 2005 and not understand the most basic principles of bidding here???

All max bids are hidden until they are outbid. EBay will only use enough of your max bid to keep you in the lead until you either win or are outbid. By keeping your max bid hidden, and only using the enough of your true bid as needed to win encourages HONEST valuation and placing your true maximum bid. That is how bidding works here.

If eBay told you the minimum amount needed to outbid the current leader, his max bid would not be hidden. That would undermine proxy bidding and likely discourage placing your real max bid. It would be a nibbler's paradise for a while until sellers left because the bottom drops out of selling prices.

If you can't decide how much something is worth to you until you see how much it is worth to someone else, you are placing yourself at a serious disadvantage here. EBay will allow you to nibble against another bidder's honest max bid but it certainly is not the best way to bid. Even if you overtake an early bidder, you are likely going to be outbid by a smarter bidder who understands bidding and avoids nibblers like you by placing his max bid too late for you to use his bid to determine how much you are willing to pay.

Rather than try to change the way that bidding works here, why not learn how proxy bidding works and use it to your advantage. I doubt that eBay will change their very successful proxy bidding because you are unable to understand it.

Yes. I don't see why they should have to keep guessing.

Since you appear to be a bit obtuse, I'll try to explain using words of no more than two syllables.

Doing it your way, and exposing the high bid, we have the following scenario. As in the previous example, an item starts at $9.99, and someone bids early at $1,000. Don't you suppose that, with the $1,000 bid exposed to everyone, that someone might want to have a little fun with the high bidder, and place a bid of $999.99? Makes sense, no...?

Places to go
Things to do
Sights to see
People to annoy...

If all of this seems confusing to you, stick to Buy It Now. There you know exactly how much you have to pay to win the object.

Re: Why can't eBay post min bid you need to be high bidder?

In that case, (somebody bids $1000.00), sport bidders and shillers would have fun bidding $999.99.

The reason that the bid leaders max bid is kept secret is to keep the bidding process honest and "real". For example, in a live auction, if somebody jumps up and says "$50.00", they don't then say "But I'll go as high as $400.00". While eBay isn't a live auction, they follow the auction process by simulating bidding by proxy. When you bid $400.00, you're telling eBay "bid for me, but only as high as needed to win, but never more than $400.00". Other buyers don't have the right to know your secret max, until such a time (if any) that it's exceeded.

As others have said, bidding isn't "guessing". Just bid once, and bid the most you would ever pay. Then you will either win or you will know that somebody else was willing to pay more than you.

Another problem with showing the leader/winner's maximum bid: Seller remorse/entitlement

Back when dutch auctions existed here, eBay went back and forth at least once on whether to show the full maximums of those bidders who bid more than the current bid (which, for those who need reminding, was the maximum bid of the lowest winning bidder, or the start bid if there were more items than bids). I recall several sellers coming here upset that such bidders didn't have to pay the full amount of their bids, and several buyers complaining that the seller was insisting on payment for the full amount of the bid.

When all else fails, read the instructions.
