An Open Letter to those who decided to move Blackthorne "in-house"

Nov 19, 2008 4:07 PM
Warning - long post!

Shortly before it was announced that eBay's Blackthorne team will be closed down in its PA office & taken over by the Seller Tools team in San Jose, it was noted that for the first time, over 5 million core & store listings are on eBay listed thru Blackthorne. How ironic!

I suspect my dismay & outrage at hearing we users are losing the Blackthorne team will likely have no effect upon the decision, but I must encourage you who decided to reconsider!
Among the eBay community, I've not experienced anything like the Blackthorne community. The developers worked closely over the years with many of us users to create a program which surpasses any competitor. Of course, there were rough patches thru the early days of development and bugs do appear with every new release, but 'tis the nature of software. The efforts of the team & many of us users resulted in a superior product.

For the Pro version at $25/month, some have complained about Blackthorne's lack of support. (Heck, even I do not have a phone # to the PA offices!) Quickly, most have discovered that on the Blackthorne-hosted boards and thru the "contact support" function within the program, support is readily available in most instances.

Imagine, you deciders: Blackthorne is what it is because of the developers and those of us who've worked with them as testers & users. A group of us core users is the free support who guide others. (A bit of a disclaimer here: I have sold much on ebay thru my listings for one-on-one remote Blackthorne training. There was a niche I've filled - but it hasn't kept me from helping out on the boards when I can, from answering dozens of "help me with Blackthorne" emails I receive each month & from offering a free Quick Start Guide.)

I have been active in the eBay Community for years & have considered Blackthorne to be my "home" community. Though I've made many a friend among eBayers, it is the friendships I've made thru the Blackthorne community (users & developers) which I especially value. (Please read Seth Godin's blog & new book, Tribes!)

I suspect we "hard-core" Blackthorne users are devotees as much because of the Blackthorne team as because of the usefulness to us each in our eBay businesses. Moving Blackthorne to San Jose & new developers is NOT what will keep us dedicated. I am involved in the Blackthorne community because of its culture of civility (for the most part) and its dedication to keeping & making the Blackthorne software a superb piece of software and the team's responsiveness to sellers' needs.

I am concerned that eBay, as demonstrated in so many things particularly this year, will not be able to, nor willing to, devote such effort to Blackthorne's growth & success. I am concerned that the Seller Tools team will not be able to grasp what I and others have about the program over months and years. (Heck, I'm one of those self-proclaimed experts & I continue to learn something new constantly.)

I urge you deciders to rethink your decision to close down the PA Blackthorne team. They are the finest examples of eBay employees - and it's only seven of them who've accomplished so much. You do not want to alienate those of us upon whom you're likely depending to keep Blackthorne alive & well. (Not a threat - just a suspicion.)

An Open Letter to those who decided to move Blackthorne "in-house"

Nov 19, 2008 5:25 PM
Message to eBay decision makers:
I suspect this decision to transfer BT to San Jose is way to far down the pike for any words to reverse it. We all know the BT developers are so smart that they likely have a plan to far exceed the wonders of BT. But just in case, it is not too late, I want eBay to know what BT has meant to me.

I never could have accomplished what I have on eBay without their help. I hope you are hearing over and over again, that it is not just the BT software that matters to me (us), it is the ready help to desperate pleas in the night, yes, often on weekends, when someone out there responds. eBay, if you are going to take over, then you need to hear us well, that you need a system for support. With all the constant changes eBay is making to the platform, it is a big job to keep the software up to date. It will not run itself.

I have been a faithful eBay defender for 11 years, but this is the first time I have felt like the ship just might be going down, if you are willing to sacrifice this relatively small piece of your pie. It is also interesting that you recently farmed out the Marketplace Research piece to an outside team, TERAPEAK, and now you are bringing BT in house. Make up your minds, are you outsourcing, or insourcing.

I wonder if one, just one, of the people who made this decision, really had any idea what BT is, had ever talked to one long term user of BT, had ever looked at the depth of the program. Then this begs the question, are you really ready to take this on and make it work?

You owe a huge mega-thanks to that BT team, especially John Slocum, for helping to generate millions of ads which generate millions of dollars or revenue for eBay.

Having been a former programmer, eBay, you are seriously making a mistake replacing this experienced base of Blackthorne programmers.

They have YEARS of programming experience that your new staff will not be able to replace.

I pay for Blackthorne because of the nearly instant support I receive by John and the rest of the team. Any problem has been handled quickly and professionally.

There is nothing wrong with remote programming. Maybe you should let tham all work from home rather than lay them off. You could generate cost savings that way and still keep your CUSTOMERS happy.

An Open Letter to those who decided to move Blackthorne "in-house"

I have been with John Slocum from the time of the old Auction Assistant, then eBay bought him out and he and his team developed Seller Assistant Pro for eBay, and now with eBay Blackthorne.

I will continue with Blackthorne Pro until something better comes along, or JS decides to maybe develope a new program in the future. Blackthorne is very stable now, and has helped me build my business to what it is today, and hopefully continues in the future.

The idea of keeping all info on my computer instead of online with eBay is a HUGE reason for my decision on Blackthorne, and ease of tracking inventory, sales, customers, feedback, and generally all listing and post sale activities has made EB Pro invaluable.

ALSO, the addition of using SQL has helped big time.

I sure do hate to see John S. and his team leave, and only wish the best for them. I am sure we have not heard the last from them, and it may be awhile, but things happen for a reason (although with eBay I am sure it is a cost thing), save a dollar to make another bone head decision.

I hope the New Blackthorne support team can take on the challenge of keeping this program that has 1000's of users and MILLIONS of listings now on eBay, working at least in the same capacity it is now.

There is not a single listing program that can do more than Blackthorne does, and if there is, I haven't found it, and probably never will.

The Blackthorne team deserve a big SALUTE for the fine software they have developed, and deserve more than a handshake (maybe?) as they walk out the eBay door.

Without Blackthorne, I also would not be able to track my business, and would not be posting on eBay as I am. It is only the options and depth of Blackthorne that enable me to do so. I, as others have said, also hope that this does not spell the end of development of this program.

Do you know John well enough to determine if this is an irrevocable decision by ebay?

I one hundred percent agree with the other posters here.

Blackthorne is a core piece of my success here on eBay.

Anything that jeopardizes it, its success, the constant updates needed to keep up with eBay changes, and the total involvement and incredible continuous response/give and take by the developers and the Blackthorne community sends chills down my spine.

If Blackthorne is lessened/changed/mucked up by this it could literally jeopardize my business.

I bought the software for $200 in the early days when it was still in beta. The thing I liked is John and his crew understood sellers when they weren't sure they would get input from us. When eBay took over and I could no longer call and talk to John it was still ok because John was on top of things
The problem with eBay is they no nothing about selling on eBay and never will. The biggest problem is they will NOT ask for input from the people that do know

I haven't been visiting any of the BT boards for quite some time.

Has JS clearly stated anywhere that this is strictly an eBay decision? The notification email that he sent out didn't give any indications of the reasons.

Let's get real, I'm sure eBay thanked JS sufficiently when they handed him the big check a few years ago. Since then I imagine the remuneration has been sufficient to keep him and his team happy.

Although I've never known just how many paid subs there are for Blackthorne I've always wondered if it was sufficient to continue to employ the Blackthorne team.

OK I had a look at the BT boards, obviously I didn't see any comments he may have made in the chat session (if he attended) but I'm not seeing anything to clear if the few posts he did make.

For sure I'm a long time user and fan of SA/BT, always had excellent support from the team and never had any problem with JS. I just don't buy into this blame eBay for everything theme. Hard business decisions need to be made, the attitude of steady as you go is what put GM in the situation they are currently in.
