Ask any question about any book

Jul 26, 2003 1:52 PM
I used to run a new thread with this title every day. Why did I stop?

The Booksellers forum is a terrific resource for all of us: pros, amateurs, hobbyists, philes, etc. There is someone here that can answer just about any question you may have about any aspect of books or the book business or eBay or taxes.

To start with, if you want to know the comparative value and/or the basic information about your book, try

www.addall.com/used/
first. This is a sort of bulletin board that lists millions of books for sale by anybody with a computer on the Internet. But beware of any and all information you may harvest in this manner, because there is no vetting.

Thanks, satnrose, I appreciate your help re: "Down and Out in the Great Depression". It actually looks like a very interesting book with wonderful photos. I won't mind keeping this one. I guess I do need a few more lessons in researching!

satnrose:

I have another book I' m having a difficult time sorting out: Ian Fleming's CHITTY CHITTY BANG BANG, published by Random House, Copyright 1964 by Glidrose Productions Ltd., illustrated by John Burningham. This is NOT the Weekly Reader version or the BCE. It has red boards, gilt title, and decorated green and black illustrated endpapers. Also has a DJ which is fairly distressed. DJ is not price clipped – it has $3.50 in the upper RH corner and states "All ages" in the lower LH corner. It has the Dedication page with the "P.S. This is a polite way of putting it…"

So what is this? First American Edition?

mariesense: According to Ahearn, the first American edition of this book actually states "First Printing" on the copyright page.

The first issue of the American edition has a 21-line dedication with the PS. The second issue has a 16-line dedication without the PS.

But there are reprints that have the 21-line dedication with the PS, but without the "First Printing" statement.

Don't ask me how that happened.

Hi,
I've been continuing my research. Learning a lot.

I do have a new question. What's a Trade Edition? What's the difference between a first trade edition and first edition.

Next, I saw on the faq section a discussion about rendered books. The ones with black marks on them, but I'm not to clear how that affects the value.

For example if I have a first edition that has a black mark would it affect the price as a first edition? I know it said to mention it in the auction, but I'm not sure what they meant.

miniblaze: A "first trade edition" is the first printing released to the general public. Other "editions" could be the limited edition, the advance reading copy, the galley proof, the advanced proof, etc.

A "remaindered" book is one that has a mark on the bottom edge of the textblock, either a stamp or a magic marker slash or an ink spray. This is a defect, and should be duly noted. Sometimes, it doesn't make much difference in the final price. But with a "common rare book", the collectors are going to want an unmarked copy.

So, the difference can be minimal, or 10%, or 50%. Depends.

That sucks. Personally, I don't think any books should be abused like that valuable or not.

So is first trade edition the same as a first edition or is it the same thing?

Satnrose and Miniblaze, thanks very much for your input. I haven't yet decided what to do with the frat book, but at least now I have a direction. I appreciate your time. Robin.

I am completly stumped by this book.

Impressions; Formed by Fred G. Smith
127 pages, Copyright 1925 by Fred G. Smith
# 1111 of 1200. Printed by the Augsburg Publishing House for Nickels & Smith, Inc.
Its a hardcover, with boards covered in wide, woven, rough, beige/tan type of fabric. Feels a bit like twine.

I've checked all the book search sites I know of and have come up empty. Anyone know of, or seen this book before? Thanks!

cde_books: Beats me. There are some copies listed in libraries in WorldCat, but that doesn't mean anything. Probably a self-published book by an unknown author and unsellable. What's it about? Poetry?

I bid on and purchased a book that the seller described as having a "loose binding." When the book arrived today, I discovered the entire spine missing. The photographs of the book that were posted did not reveal this condition. I would categorize this book as a "binding copy." Does the term "loose binding" cover a book in this condition? I would like to know before leaving negative feedback.
