Changes to Make Product Finders Appear as Categories

May 19, 2004 10:40 AM
Hi Everyone,

Over the last several months, we’ve introduced enhancements to Books, Music, Movies, and Video Games categories to offer buyers more flexibility in finding items. This strategy has involved simplifying the category structure by replacing the lower levels of the existing category structure with Item Specifics.

Based on Community feedback and careful observation of buyer behavior as they browse these categories, in the next few days we will be making a change to the Product Finder feature to make it easier for browsers to use. The current drop-down menus for item specifics will be replaced with links, so that genres, subjects, platforms, etc. will be clearly visible on search pages and listings pages. By showing these links prominently to buyers, it will be even easier for them to find their favorite genres, subjects, and platforms.

This change to Product Finder helps buyers by combining the flexibility offered by Item Specifics with a more familiar category-like interface. We hope this change will assist with any browsers that have had difficulty using the drop down menus to find items in this area.

Below are frequently asked questions and screenshots of how this change will look.

Regards,
eBay

What is Changing?
We are removing the drop-down menus in the Product Finders in the Books, Movies, Music, and Video Games categories and replacing them with links. Here is an example of how the listings pages will look:

We are also expanding the main (or “portal”) pages for each of these areas in order to show many more links for buyers. Here is how this page will look:

Why did we make this change?

Buyers who search for items in the books, music, movies, and video games categories have asked us for more powerful features to narrow down their search results to a more manageable list. In response to this request, we have built product finders in many areas of eBay that help buyers filter their searches using drop-down menus to select item specifics (genre, condition, etc.) . While item specifics are an important feature that allow buyers the flexibility to narrow their browsing lists in ways that are tailored to suit their needs, we have found that the interface presented to the Product Finder itself has needed improvement. We believe there is a better way to display the Product Finder tool so that browsers will find it easier to use. In the next few days, we will replace the drop down menus with links that visually appear very similar to the “matching categories” we had previously. By changing the way buyers use the Product Finder, we offer buyers the flexibility of item specifics with a familiar, intuitive look-and-feel.

Why is this change taking place only in Books, Music, Movies, and Video Games?

We have listened to the buyers and sellers in the BMMG categories and studied the methods and features buyers use to shop in these categories to determine that this change was right for this area of the site. We are currently evaluating other eBay categories to see if this change would be appropriate elsewhere. In categories where buyers are more comfortable with drop-down menus, we may maintain product finder functionality in this format.

What will be changing next?

eBay users shop in many different ways and have different needs in how they want to sort through the items for sale on eBay.com. To respond to their needs and the needs of our growing community of sellers, we will continue to refine item specifics and evolve the eBay platform to help buyers and sellers transact. In time, we may evolve the product finder tool again to offer members a choice, so that drop-down menus are available to those buyers who want to find items quickly and product finder links are available to browsers who want to scan items.

Re: Changes to Make Product Finders Appear as Categories

Well let's recap: my book sales dropped immediately after the ingenious category "roll-ups". Have not recovered since.

I bought a $300 tape set, the seller skipped town and Paypal recovered $31 for me. WOOHOO! Drinks for everyone on me!

I have a buyer who hit my buy it now and then refused to pay. Halfway through the nonpaying bidder process, she managed to get eBay to delist my auction even though I have master resell rights on it. Half a dozen emails and 2 weeks later, all I received from eBay was cookie cutter replies citing guidelines that don't even apply to my situation.

Meanwhile, another PowerSeller and myself reported a seller every other day for selling bootleg Anthony Robbins cd sets - in direct competition to our own legitimate products. I even spoke to live support twice and this went on for A MONTH before they finally did something about it.

Ok eBay. Keep playing with your bells and whistles and ignoring your PowerSellers. Fix things that aren't broken and ignore your problems. Roll up your categories and raise your fees. Sounds like a plan.

Keep flooding this board with ideas --- keep it comin - ebay pays a ton of people to deal with details like this - let's see if they can keep up -- almost every one of these ideas is a good one - I think -- bookscm - please have someone answer EVERY poster's question please -- right now booksellers really need to feel a sense of being heard and starting to trust again -- please.

I'm just not getting it...
You're going to make item specifics look more like categories. Why not just go back to categories like everyone wants? Other than slowing down the listing process, making other software programs useless, and angering a lot of sellers, what exactly is the point of them?

And PLEASE bring going going gone back, the way it was rather than with all the featured items showing first.

We are pleased (we think?) that some "category" ability is coming back, but are hesitant to start listing again, until we're sure that this new method will be transparent and allow buyers to find books(large assumption).

We are, of course, hoping that Textbooks/Foreign Language will be broken down into AT LEAST modern and ancient languages. Our sales in that department collapsed completely after being our mainstay for 3 years.

But the flood of HDC sellers with carpy and badly listed items is perhaps screwing things up as much as the category roll-ups. Trying to browse, even if you're using keywords alone, is a nightmare. We scout "Latin" books all the time, looking at the competition and for good buys. We've given up -- there are THOUSANDS of books on Latin American power in 1977, for example, selling (or mostly not selling) for $.99 with $6.00 shipping -- we get bored and get off. And, yes, we could click on the "Textbook" drop down to narrow it -- but people don't always list their books in the right "category". With all the thousands of carp books you can't find anything worth buying anyway, categories or no categories.

So we're not listing on ebay for a while -- might as well use my time for something productive, like cleaning the grout in the shower.

We'll wait and see.

I can see maybe wanting to try this PF thing but why delete so many subcategories???? IT IS HURTING PEOPLE'S BUSINESS. SOMEBODY PLEASE HELP THESE PEOPLE WHO ARE LOSING BUSINESS.....please?

Another problem: I cannot list a book in 2 categories if both categories are book categories - i.e. I can't list the book in 'interior design' and 'home decor' like I used to. Which means I get half the views for my auction, and pay Ebay half the fees I used to . I lose, Ebay loses. Not a good move.

And I second, third, and quadruple the motion to bring back 'going going gone'. That was a great feature for buyers.

The changes had nothing to do with buyers clamoring for a better search method & all to do with accommodating HDC sellers.
I don't expect to sell IS go away ever. I can adapt my selling but it is pointless
without buyers. The roll-up change was not well thought out & guess who suffers-
the sellers.

All these changes made by Ebay to a perfectly sound system are like some idiot putting a hole in a drum and parading it around as a wonderful new improvement.

Their incompetence is only rivaled by their arrogance!

I dunno... I think their incompetence outstripped their arrogance months ago.

I HATE THIS! PUT IT BACK TO THE WAY IT WAS WITH ALL OF THE ORIGINAL CATEGORIES! Everytime you make a change it takes 10 times as long to list anything because you FORCE ME TO VIEW IT ON EVERYONE OF MY AUCTIONS!

KNOCK IT OFF!

But will I, as a buyer, be able to browse in these subcategories, I mean, Product Finders, I mean, Item Specifics, uh, whatever... but will be able to browse in these with "Newly Listed" "Ending Today" and "Going Going Gone"? - a very important component ripped out with the "category roll-up".

I HAD A DREAM... "Dear buyers and sellers, due to the overwhelming number of complaints, and after a careful review of the dramatic decrease in sales for both EBay and dedicated sellers we want to say "WE ARE SORRY :( for our grave ERROR". EFFECTIVE IMMEDIATELY **we will be returning to the previous book selling format that has proven to be the best for everyone concerned. Please accept our apologies... WE WERE WRONG AND MAD A BIG MISTAKE Warm regards, EBay.

Oh boy, It wasn't a dream, it was a NIGHTMARE...I just woke up :(
