Could someone assist...

About two weeks ago or so someone had posted a link to that give you an idea on pricing for older books...

Could someone please reply and post that link...

A neighbor of mine was "throwing-out" some older books (1867 to 1922 books) and wanted to see if any of them are of value.

Mostly Christain lit about the old testiment and they are in like mint condition.

With the exception of a book that is unique, in my opinion, due to its about sexual intercourse for your marriage from what I can see from looking over the table contents that was released in 1918.

She stated that they were her great grandfather's & had NO use for them, thought they were trash...

Better site to use for the books you describe might be this one -

http://www.abebooks.com/servlet/SearchEntry

or this one

http://www.vialibri.net/

Remember to keep your search criteria simple to start with -

Just the last name for author - ie - Smith

instead of John George Washington Burns Smith

A Couple of key words for title - Civil War

instead of - A Complete and Detailed History of the Civil War As It Was Fought by an Ordinary Soldier...

And also be sure to exclude POD or Print on Demand

Sounds like an interesting research project.

beckeyw - Go ahead and post the title, author, publisher of your "mysterious marriage advice" book here and the let the BSB folk help you find it.

It will help liven up the summer doldrums here - ;)

beckeyw:

Prices are Viabri and the various listing services are asking prices. The only situation when you can really trust these prices are when there are a large number of copies for sale, many of which are priced cheaply. You then know the book is not worth much.

Little of the pricing on these sites is by knowledgeable experts. Instead there is a great deal of pricing based on:

1. I'll price it high since there are no other copies available, so it must be valuable.

2. I'll price it cheap to move it since I only paid $.50 for it.

3. The most common: follow the leader (or the blind leading the blind). You price based on the existing prices. But if these are too high the books will never sell; if too low you leave money on the table.

So if you find the book very interesting (even though another dealer didn't see its value), and you describe it accurately to show its appeal you could well get a reasonable price on eBay.

This statement might be true for commodity books, but it doesn't apply to collectable books.  At some indefinable threshold the guessing game ceases.  I can't even recall the last time I saw a book priced inaccurately on any of the fixed price services.

As with any other trade, if you don't know your colleagues, their specialities, and the fashion in which they price, you're simply looking at numbers wholly out of context.  Likewise, if you're unfamiliar with the book itself and the position which it occupies within the bibliographic progression, you'll often find youself at a loss.  If you don't know what trait  Vesalius' De Humani Corporis, The Three Voyages of Captain James Cook and the Plato Opera (and coutless other titles from the fifteenth century right up to the present day) have in common, you'll find yourself completely over your head when it comes to description and pricing.

BECKEYW,

I found that 19th century religious texts do well in a B&M store with a speciality in Religion. Not as well on-line where the commission rates & postage eat up profits. Definitely NOT trash. If you are near NW Pennsylvania, give me an email.  luckylindy
