Not exactly the spirit of the games ...

"(AP) LONDON - Four badminton teams were kicked out of the women's doubles at the London Games on Wednesday for trying to lose on purpose, conduct that a top IOC executive said strikes at the heart of Olympic competition.

The eight doubles players from China, South Korea and Indonesia were cited by the Badminton World Federation for "conducting oneself in a manner that is clearly abusive or detrimental to the sport."

[...]

The Chinese players tried to rig the draw after its second-seeded pair unexpectedly lost to a Danish team in the morning. That placed the No. 2 pair on course for a semifinal meeting with Wang and Yu, instead of the final.

Wang and Yu then deliberately set out to lose so they would go into the bottom half of the draw. They hardly exerted themselves, and neither did the South Koreans, drawing jeers of derision from the crowd and warnings from the umpire and tournament referee Torsten Berg. Wang and Yu eventually got what they wanted by losing.

An hour later, the South Korean team of Ha and Kim took to the court and decided to also try to lose to the Indonesians to avoid meeting Wang and Yu in the quarterfinals. Early on, all four players were warned by the umpire for not trying hard, and Berg returned and produced black cards to disqualify both pairs, but the cards were rescinded on a promise of better play.

In the third game, Berg reappeared to urge them to finish, and the Indonesians ended up being better at losing than Ha and Kim, who fell into the playoff they didn't want with the world champions."

They ought not be allowed to participate in any more officially-sanctioned events (Olympics, World Championships, etc.). Ever.

And their countries should not allow them back home. I saw some footage of the Chinese players throwing their match, and it was appalling.

Maybe they thought that playing too well would result in some U.S coach accusing them of drug taking . ]:)

John Leonard is not "some U.S. coach" and is not a part of the coaching staff of the U.S. (or any other) Olympic Team - he's the Executive Director of World Swimming Coaches Association.  Get your facts straight.

Again, he's not "some U. S. coach."  You're reading something into the above which isn't there.  He's the Executive Director of the World Swimming Coaches Association, and was speaking from that platform.  He is not, in any way, associated with the U. S. Olympic Team.

"John Leonard is not an employee, representative or spokesperson for USA Swimming, nor is he a member of the U.S. Olympic swim team or part of the U.S. delegation," a United States Olympic Committee spokesman said.

Leonard, executive director of the World Swimming Coaches Association said that history showed that every time something 'unbelievable' occurred in swimming, it turned out ultimately to involve doping.

"We want to be very careful about calling it doping," the American John Leonard, executive director of the World Swimming Coaches Association, told Britain's Guardian newspaper.

He was never a U. S. Team coach as far as I'm aware - he merely served on the Steering Committee.  His position notwithstanding, he should be removed immediately as Executive Director of the World Swimming Coaches Association for his remarks in light of the fact that Ye has been officially cleared of any wrongdoing.  Has he rendered an apology as yet?

No, I don't believe so.  Lepnard is currently a F.I.N.A. member, and is on the Advisory Committee for 2012, which automatically makes him a member of the Oversight Committee for the London Olympics.  It's his job to report any suspicious activity - but to the Games Committee -  not to the media.

Considering all the cheating and chicanery so far - the badminton debacle, the Japanese Women's Soccer Team intentionally playing to a draw so as to secure a better draw and less travel in the next round; the Brazillian Soccer Team's allegations regarding their bus trip and a six hour delay forcing them to play with no practise, on very little rest - maybe it's time to simply shut the Olympiad down.

' maybe it's time to simply shut the Olympiad down '

Or they could forget about the athletes and turn it into a competition between politicians with events designed for their peculiar talents such as....

 The Back-pedal .

Where they demonstrate their ability to put as much distance as possible between themselves and their pre-election pledges.

I'm sure there are many others.
