Help with old Tale of Two Cities book

Hello,

I am not a book seller, I specialize in vintage jewerly. I couldn't resist this old copy of the Charles Dickens classic. The art nouveau cover is so pretty. Published by H.M. Caldwell. There is no publishing date in the book. At the top of the title page it says "Berkeley Library". I've looked on Abe and Biblio but couldn't find this version. Any information is much appreciated.  More photos in next post.

Thanks,

Julie

Julie, your Caldwell reprint probably falls pretty squarely in the midst of the Art Nouveau period, given the binding decoration - at the turn of the century.  There are three similar copies offered on ABE:

in the same general price range.  Other Caldwell "Berkley Editions" can be searched on ABE, and one - Barrie's The Little Minister - dates to 1898, so it's probably safe to assume that the whole series does likewsie.

Hey Fine,

Thanks so much for the very helpful info.

Any special key words to put in my title for listing on ebay? Is there a special name for the rough look of the page edges?

I'd probably use "decorated binding" and "Nouveau" in the title line, along with "Tale" "Cities" and "Dickens."

The 'ragged' edges are the result of the fact that the bolts (the folds where a bifolia later becomes two separate leaves) of books (one edge in a quarto or folio, two in an octavo) were once opened by their owners and not cut by the publisher.  The result is sometimes erroneously referred to "deckled," but deckling is actually an intentional process in and of itself, and unrelated to untrimmed edges.
