I gave my Big Boy tomatoes their first big boy haircut today. The plants look a little shocked. I wish I could take them out for ice cream. Maybe I'll give them some compost later.

Transplant of 8 eggplant plants from the bed that has most of the tomatoes to the bed that had the black seeded simpson lettuce was a major success. The eggplants took a day to recover and now everybody's happy with plenty of room to grow. I planted lots of basil and marigolds around the tomatoes-- I hope it was enough to hide the scent of the tomatoes from the dreaded horned tomato worm. If you've never seen this it's worth googling. YouTube has some videos of this monster also.

The horned tomato worm may be better known as tomato hornworm.

Something is eating my eggplant leaves. I found a large striped beetle that flew away when I tried to pick it off the leaf. Then I found small soft bodied slimy little bugs that looked like little round slugs and I picked them off of the leaves. When I soaked the garden some more beetles crawled up out of the dirt at the base of the plants. From ask. com I found out that these are Colorado potato beetles and tomorrow I will try and find some diatomaceous earth.

We are having a bumper crop of zucchini! Five plants this year in my own garden plus lots of zucchini in my CSA share is resulting in lots and lots of zucchini. Even though zucchini is one of my favorite vegetables (a close third after sugar snap peas and tomatoes) there is sometimes too much of a good thing! If you find yourself in a similar situation, this is a reminder that shredded zucchini is terrific in zucchini bread, pancakes, even brownies and it is very easy to freeze for use at a later date. Wash the zucchini, peel or don't peel, shred (my Kitchenaid does this in about three minutes) pack 1 or 2 cup portions into airtight containers or ziplock freezer bags, and put in the freezer. That's all there is to it!
