I dunno, but there sure are a lotta copies in WorldCat libraries. That 1500 dollar job is pathetic sounding, and ex-lib. It the prices weren't hallucinatory, don'tcha think that enterprising American booksellers already woulda stolen them there liberry copies, like they went an' stole every dustwrapper on every Hemingway, Steinbeck, Fitzgerald and Faulkner book, everywhere in America?

Tom - it's two amateurs cribbing from one another.

Fine...perhaps you should learn to use WorldCat a bit more wisely before guffawing. Not only was the title only held by 63 prestigious
collegiate libraries..but...out of those 63, only 25 had hard back copies, not microfilm. Out of those 25, were inclusions of 2nd printings and London printings. So, maybe a dozen or less held in these libraries of the first ed. Search eBay and Google..only 2 copies being sold at the moment, worldwide. I'm not saying that it is in the $1K league..but, I do think that it qualifies as scarce to rare.

If I were you, I'd get my money back from my OCLC subscription, Tom. They're cheatin' ya - there are 27 examples of the 1883 Lovell edition listed under this accession number alone, and dozens of separate entries:

Pike county folks.
Edward Harold Mott

1883
English Book : Fiction 6, [11]-278 p. : front., illus. ; 19 cm.

Take a look at the other $1000+ books being offered on abe by the highest priced seller. It will not give you any confidence in his ability to evaluate this book.

The other price is just follow-the-leader after him.

Virginia - I already said, "it's two amateurs cribbing from one another." You're just playing follow-the-leader.

;)

Tom - with regard to learning to use WorldCat - I apologise for replying; it won't ever happen again. Good luck with the book, and whatever you do, don't check ABPC - you might be just a trifle disappointed.

old..I did not just single out the highest listed prices on abe..they were the only copies being sold. This title/edition has not come up for sale in any venue in the past few weeks. I went to where fine directed me. There were 63 holdings of the title. The mix was first ed, NY, 2nd ed, NY, London ed., and microfilm. Out of that number, only about 25-27 were actually BOOKS. In that mix, I saw all 3 editons , not all were the 1883 copies. Every copy held was in an ivy league or fine university, by the way. OK, this is not a $1K book..but hardly something that is floating around in every podunk library, either.

Fine..you must be British("apologise"), which would account for the witticism. No need to apoloGIZE. You are entitled to your opinion, as I am entitled to counter it(a tad). Old..thanks for chiming in. You never felt the need to ask me to "cancel a subscription", or refer to me by a literary nickname(hey, he forgot POLLYANNA).

antiques845:

I know you did not single out the highest price listing. My suggestion was that you spend the time to try to determine if the people who have the book might know anything about what they were doing, but if you don't care to, that's ok.

There are 27 Worldcat libraries with non-microfilm copies of the Lovell 1883 edition--I ran my own check and got the same answer as fine.

It ain't rare--it ain't even scarce.

By the way, Worldcat basically only censuses U.S. university and research libraries plus a few of the larger public libraries and a handful of foreign institutions.

antiques845 - I simply brushed past your screen name thinking you were one of the Board regulars (Tom - a bookseller). The Open Search on OCLC / WorldCat truncates at a certain number of entries; subscribers' searches are all-inclusive.

That said, the book is relatively common, and the two ABE sellers are simply amateurs - one following the other's faulty lead.

LOL at ABPC..$800 subscription(they deem themselves "elegant"). The only true(inexpensive) way to get fair market value would be to list your item at a ridiculous reserve...and see how high the last bid went.

John W. Lovell produced mainly bootleg copies around the same time period. His mission was to produce very cheap books for the general public, and that's exactly what he did. One of the reasons why his reprints for this period can be so hard to find is because they were not made very well, therefore few have survived in good condition, if at all. It's unlikely a first edition. Google Publisher's Weekly>John W. Lovell>Pike County>1883.
