New photo requirement coming

As with most of you I am getting very frustrated with trying to comply with Ebay's constant policy changes. We use a 3rd party listing service to upload our inventory. Stock photos are added when avail. but we have a lot of books that do not have photos. According to customer service starting this fall if your listing does not have a photo it will not renew at the end of the month. Also if it is a used book with a stock catalog photo you will no longer be able to use that either. We have over 20,000 used books in our inventory. Does anyone have any idea of any services out there that will post a supplied stock photo to the ads?

Starting May 1—get up to 2,500 FREE listings* every month with an eBay Stores subscription

eBay has reduced the upfront cost to sell for Store sellers! With eBay’s new everyday rate plans, you get from up to 150 to 2,500 FREE listings* per month—no insertion fees, auction-style or fixed price—with an eBay Stores subscription. You pay a final value fee only when you sell! Plus, the final value fees for Stores have been streamlined to just 5 competitive category-based rates as low as 4%—and never more than 9%—regardless of how you sell.

Learn more about everything eBay Stores have to offer, then use the Fee Illustrator to find the best Store option for you! Watch this tutorial to learn how.

*Pay no insertion fees for your allotted free listings per calendar month. Optional fees, including advanced listing upgrades and supplemental service fees, still apply. Pay final value fees only when you sell. Motors Vehicles, Real Estate, Heavy Equipment, Concession Trailers & Carts, Imaging & Aesthetics Equipment and Commercial Printing Presses are excluded. 12 free pictures does not apply to Motors Vehicles listings. Of course it would have been totally different if I was looking to buy an antiquarian book

The very portion of the Trade where you'll very seldom even find an image of the book, rather than just a description.

But wouldn't a seller on Ebay provide lots of photos of books like that?

My point exactly hence the reasoning for getting the basic store level... MORE PICs

I am lucky that the camera I have allows me to edits pictures before loading them to the computer (easier some times)... I can do approximate 20 to 35 books between photography of them then checking to see if I current have a copy of the book on stock and listing the ones that I don't have in stock will only take approve an hour to an hour half, depends on Muse if they have the correct description or NOT (which as of lately since I have getting into older titles they are not there or TOTALLY off the wall (EXAMPLE: Stephen King, MUSE has him listed as juvenile fiction, umm since when is christine or pet semtary children books-Sorry have to chuckle)

I have had SEVERAL buyers that thank me for not standing behind a stock photo for books that sell.

(The one buyer I dealt with stated they bought the same exact book from another seller that had a stock photo exclaiming that their  book was like new and when they received it was in VERY poor condition, "at least with your ads I can see the book before I buy making it confident purchase" )

Maybe this will help out a little bit:

http://pages.ebay.com/sellerinformation/sellingresources/picturestandards.html

1. "When the new picture quality standards take effect this fall, they will only apply to new, revised, and relisted listings."

2. Every listing must have at least one picture.

Listings without accompanying photos will no longer be allowed; every listing must have at least one photo. If your item isn't something you can photograph yourself (e.g. a vacation package), browse the Internet for free images you can use with your listing.

3. "Stock photos can only be used for brand new items.

Stock photos may no longer be used as the primary photo for a used item listing. Catalog images are acceptable, but not as the primary photo for non-new items; exceptions are the Books, Movies, Music, and Video Game categories."

It might seem odd to some people that I don't reply to obie_juan_cannoli, but it's because I don't read his posts.

It was several years ago that eBay said that Gallery photos would be free...

A subtle hint that one photo was required for a listing

For a while   there was very few listings without a gallery photo.

But over the years many became "lazy"  and over time gallery photos were  not present.

So now eBay says one photo is an absolute necessity  and must be of a specific size

If one checks back  one can trace many situations  where something occurred on eBay... which subsequently became a "rule"

Imagine  a change in USPS shipping that has to be put in revised listing... that require a photo.

Some book seller have thousands, upon thousands of books on eBay... with many having no photos....not a One

and many bookseller continue to add listings to eBay... and without one photo.....

This fall could get very exciting  when listings disappear because of the rule of one photo of a specific size kicks in....

what eBay says today  could be a rule at some time down the road....  List and adjust today... before a future time when something like a photo becomes an absolute necessity

When eBay says "in the fall", is there any pattern to suggest what particular month they are referring to?

When I hear the word the fall I think they mean, October or November but I could be mistaken..

Just glad that I already implemented this requirement prior to them stating that this was required...

I always try to look for the possitive in everything I do. Sometimes it is hard to do when Ebay comes up with new rules. But with sales so far down this year, it may be a blessing that around 17,000 of our listings will disapear from ebay.  It is going to save around $500 a month in listing fees and they will still be listed on all of our other stores that do not charge any where near what we pay here per  month. As it is just not feasable to revise all of those listings we will let them go and sell them on other sites. Eventually we will relist them here as our inventory cyles through. As for the previous comment about how ebay hints what will become a rule, here is my prediction for the next or soon to be next policy change. Sellers will have to pay return shipping for the customers. That can be a big night mare. Just a guess.

I've actually been thinking the same thing about ebay eventually requiring the sellers pay for return shipping, if only to keep the FVF discount.

Your experience or views may differ, but I think that having a photo for each of your listing actually HELPS you.

I go through the trouble of crafting each of my listings individually, albeit with a template. I have an average of 2-3 pictures per active listing.

Customers appreciate being able to see what they're buying.

Used to sell a lot here - but all the changes, the impossible searchability and inscrutable and ever-increasing fee structure means I only have a couple of things listed here now.

I usually list a bunch of items for the holidays starting in September-ish going through the end of the year.

I also am a buyer here - and speaking as a buyer - if the seller can't be bothered to provide a photo of their product, I can't be bothered to read their listing and I'll just click on by and make my purchase from a seller with decent photo(s) and description.

Thank you for that reminder.

Almost every eBay seller is inevitably an eBay buyer too, and what drives you when buying should be considered when selling, too.

I'll bite on the how:

I list these days primarily on Amazon which has stock photo's through MUSE, and describe all flaws accurately enough that any experienced book buyer will know what they are getting.

When it says corners bumped and rubbed you don't expect sharp corners.

But with new listings, and with books that don't have stock photos, which would be all books prior to 1972, I have to look them up and if they don't have a picture, I am adding one.

So what I do is pile them up for a while, I photograph them en masse. I edit them en masse and I upload them en masse.

I use The Art of Books which uploads the photos to all the sites, even Amazon.

I use Picasa to edit--it is fast. It delivers accurate edits as to color and contrast from my cheap camera and the crop function is swift. It also uploads to storage on line.

I have never seen the sense in carrying my complete inventory here at eBay, the cost is prohibitive and their version of MUSE so riddled with errors I just know I'll be selling a book by Joyce Kilmer and they will picture Judge Judy.

Well after days of trying to meet the new requirements, I started checking other photos, what I found was that no pictures meet thier requirements. Even the car dealers, antique dealers and every picture I checked. So I went and checked pictures on Amazon same deal. If ebay sticks to thier new requirements I wonder what they say to thier investors when they turn out the lights @ Eaby.com

I take photos, and several of them, for every single listing I do. People who buy books from me appreciate that they can actually see the book they're getting and not a stock photo. I can't understand how big sellers get away with not offering even one photo.  It seems to be unfair competition - buyers can see my listing, which actually shows the book (even if not the identical one), with a description, and then go to the lazy big seller to buy one for  99 cents after I did all the work to sell the thing.  Sellers who care more about seeing the actual book they're getting may still buy from me instead, but frankly, I've had the craps of the 99 cent sellers of thousands and thousands of books without photos or much information. If I had my way, even booksellers would be required to show at least one original photo of the actual book they're selling with each listing.  Go ahead and complain up a storm, big sellers.....

Sorry - but I meant to say that buyers can see my actual book but big sellers can show a photo of a book that may be the right book but not the actual one for sale under the listing....

If the books don't merit the 30 seconds or so it takes to take a photo, why bother to list them?

Re: New photo requirement coming

Anyone care to discuss how they get photos for their books via a fast, methodical procedure?

When I decided to list some 600 books from She Who May Not Be Named, I did this:

Went to AOB, downloaded a specific list from the publisher with pricing less than $X.

I pulled the books.

I piled the books into sub-genre.

I went through the subgenre piles and took pictures with our Canon Rebel SLR.  I could go through a sub pile of 20 books in about 4 minutes, piling one book on top of the one already taken.

Another minute had the done pile moved and the next pile in place for pictures.

Once completed, the card into the card reader, Control+A for "select all" drag and drop into a folder prepared for the pictures. My computer moves a 5MB picture in about 2 seconds, so it's off to the kitchen or the booksellers board until they are all moved.

Delete all from the card--another break to do something else.

Pull the card and replace it in the camera.

Control+A > right click > rotate clockwise--another break to do something else.

Open on picture, launch Picasa--another break to do something else because Picasa has to import every file in the folder.

Then: "I feel lucky", "Straighten" "Crop" and Save. until done. If it needs fill light, it gets it.

Last batch of 50 took me less than an hour, including sorting them into piles.

Uploading to Photobucket--for Biblio and etc. takes a while. Not necessary for eBay or Amazon. I drag and drop into TL for eBay. Amazon gives me no options.
