Not a huge amount of money but a HUGE problem Has anyone else handled this?
Jul 7, 2012 08:46 PM

Recently I found that Rick's great grandfather served in the Grand Army and that his brother has one of the ribbons with doo dads.  So I found the regiment and company and an ebook about it and ordered it online using my personal PP account.

The next day I received an email from the person whose name is on the site, clicked to download my ebook and instead received ... (fanfare).... a nice MALicious bug with lots of unremovable pop ups, after which with my friend's help I installed malware through one of our related "clean" computers and then removed the offender.

I need to report this site and the email from the site's owner.  Knowing that PP doesn't do anything generally for sales outside of eBay, and looking at my choices for reporting a security etc. problem, I don't see one that is related.  And at this time of night they are closed to phone calls.

Should I wait until tomorrow and telephone?  Has this happened to any of you?  I don't now if I want to call the telephone number given on this site, but what if the site owner's site was invaded?  Is it better to let PP handle it?  Will PP do anything since this was an off eBay purchase?

I cannot believe this happened again so soon.  We have had our computer fill with pornography and then go black, had previous malicious activity, and things added in that added themselves to other sites.  At least this time we didn't have to pop for our tech to come out and use a bug bomb. Well, it's time to tighten up the hatches even more.

Any help appreciated.

Thanks,

m.

I did telephone and the call went to voice mail with the man giving the name on the site.  I left a message.  That's all I think I can do at this point other than to wait until daytime Sunday and wait to see if there is a response to my message.

If you used your credit card, report the ' fraud ' to them.

File a claim with ppal anyway.

Good to notify the seller... Just in case they are not aware of the situation, but don't (in this case) wait for them to respond.

www.dns-ok.us

There's a ghost virus of some sort going on.  Above will show green if OK or red if afflicted......but there's small print about how your server gets you to the site... Sorry to be' fuzzy' but I AM.

Here is what I found out: The cc company said to report it to PP.  PayPal said not to report it to the cc company yet, that though not covered under buyer protection, they do file a claim.  So now I wait since the site owner has 10 days to respond to their query.

Very scary!  Hope everything gets sorted out OK.

I guess I'm just a naive little innocent, but I don't get the mentality of hurting people you don't know.  Punching someone I'm mad at in the snoot, I get. (I do try to restrain myself, obviously, but it's the thought that counts!)  Causing harm to an unknown person who has done nothing to me, well, what's that all about?

Causing harm to an unknown person... that one may be unexplainable since the mind in a rational state should always consider do this as inconceivable--as inconceivable as following a leader who starts a war to obtain power and control, which involves harming unknown persons, and yet this is one that for which history will become the teacher.

The jury is still out about what happened.  I have taken the appropriate steps but am still hoping that the cause is not a bogus site.

This morning there was an email from PayPal. They resolved in the seller's favor. The seller never returned my call.  I received no ebook. The seller has my $12.95.

What I got out of the transaction: a VIRUS.

If half the USA population performed one act of kindness daily that would be over 150,000,000 kindly acts every 24 hours, just over a billion each week.

I just called PayPal who directed my call to someone in a different country.  I wanted to thank them for allowing the seller to steal my money.  I said I wanted to talk to someone in the U.S.A.  The guy hung up on me.

That would seem to indicate that PPal are benefitting from unlawful income, making them accessories to the crime at the very least.

The US version of our Financial Ombudsman would seem to be the person to contact.

If not to retrieve your own funds, then to prevent this seller, and PPal, from profiting from further unlawful transactions via unwitting customers.

A preoccupation with the next world is a clear indication of an inability to cope credibly with this one. .
