Ladies, have any of you read Fifty Shades of Grey? :8} (blushing)

Does this composite photo released by Dr. Faye Skelton using  image-generating software resemble the Christian Grey in your imagination?

http://movieline.com/2012/07/09/50-shades-of-grey-perfect-christian-grey/

I ask because the Christian Grey in my imagination looks nothing like the man above (except maybe the eyes --- which were "stolen" from Patrick Dempsey --- and possibly the hair, which is slightly similar, although my imaginary man's hair has more curl)!

Am I the only one on the BSB who's read this book?

Now I'm really embarrassed!!!!!   B-)

I generally only read non-fiction and rarely indulge in fiction (I never read the Twilight books; never read The Hunger Games), but the hype surrounding this book aroused my curiosity, so I had to check it out.

I guess I'm the only one here who's done so ... how strange!

I haven't read it...just say that I am surprised that a BDSM romance is selling so well right now. Is this a nation of closeted A.N. Roquelaure readers?

Wiki calls it something...Mommy Porn?  I've not read, but it sounds like a formula close to hooker and rich guy.  Magically, wealth takes the slime and infection out of the fantasy.

Or, he makes it "Hurt so Good?"

Is this really the kind of porn "Mommy" wants?  : - )

I wondered if it is somehow connected to 'cutting' and the relief said to be part of that? I do not know how they organize the 'S' and the 'M' in these books.

PS An exciting man could look like anyone if there's the right eye connection. This guy's a dead flat.

If'n y'all like that sort of stuff,

check out Ellora's Cave

(((shameless plug follows)))

it's a local publishing company that has managed to round up most of the better names in "Mommy Porn".

I've not read any. I have about 600 books in my basement, selling through 850 or so that were donated to our FOL and deemed "inappropriate" by the blue haired old ladies who devote their entire lives to earning nickels for the library.

It's apparently quite an industry as some of them were signed at a convention, and they've developed a rating system around the word SEX (how creative!) for just how randy the books are.

Sexy.

Erotic. (highly)

X-rated-to be pure porn.

Lots of animalistic titles, magic, and SM related titles and pictures.

Life begins at the end of your comfort Zone.

Well,tit for tat,;)

There's the Daddy Porn in the form of the Longarm Western series.

The Longarm books are a series of westerns featuring Custis Long,a US Marshall from Colorado and set in the 1880's.

These books are distinguished from classical westerns by the

inclusion of more explicit sex and violence.

Not your basic bodice ripper here!

Have not and will not read the book.

The OP link resembles a young Val Kilmer.

I don't get the popularity. It feels to me that all of a sudden there's this neat title in the news like it's the next beanie baby. I expect those that venture to integrate porn into the main stream will eventually meet with failure, after they rake in the big bucks.

Were you aware that these books began as fan fiction for the Twilight series? I'm not sure I see the connection between a teenage vampire and a presumably older guy into BDSM.

Half way through the first book in the trilogy, and I have to agree..  the Christian Grey in my imagination looks NOTHING like the image in the linky.

I could see Anastasia played by Emma Stone assuming it gets to the big screen.

Woof.

I thought it might be the new 'Harry Potter' at first.

Mommy porn?

Definitely sticking to my intention to give it a wide swerve in that case.

.

A preoccupation with the next world is a clear indication of an inability to cope credibly with this one. .

Near as I can figure, erotica has been around since the first cave person pulled a stick of charcoal out of the firepit and started sketching her (or his) preferences on the cave walls.

There has always been a conservative bunch who decries the imminent destruction of the world at the appearance of any images or words that depict or describe bodily functions.

Just as there are those who profit from exploiting and enabling all kinds of human fantasies.

Most humans will try to protect the exploited, avoid the fear-mongers and recognize the extremes as either fear, frustration or fantasy and live their lives accordingly.

Sigmapsidelta, I thought Brits were into corporal punishment ... ;)

"Mommy porn" is a somewhat condescending term used to describe this book.  It's just erotica: the writing is not that good, but the characters are interesting and you find yourself getting "bound" to the story (pun intended) just to see what happens to them.

It's somewhat reminiscent of the movie "Nine 1/2 Weeks" with Kim Basinger and Mickey Rourke, only the book's characters are quite a bit younger (in their 20s).

Re: OT (but book-related): Christian Grey

I don't understand the hype around this book. There is certainly plenty of much better written erotica (yes, Ellora's Cave authors are a good example), plus any number of historical romance novels that have very explicit sex scenes. As to S&M, there is, of course, the classic -- A.M. Roquelaire's Sleeping Beauty trilogy.

I have not read the book and am not planning to -- I try to stay away from bad writers -- but from what I've gleaned, this composite is way off the mark. Too coarse and crude. I would expect Christian Grey to be more sophisticated. Too bad that Alexander Scarsgard apparentl is no longer in the running for the role.

Re: OT (but book-related): Christian Grey

That composite looks NOTHING at all like I imagine Christian Grey in my mind. I agree with who ever said he needs to be more sophisticated. I imagine someone who looks like either Ian Somerhaulder or the Cuban actor William Levy who was on Dancing With the Stars last season...HOT!!  William's english is too accented though, they'd have to do voice overs all the way through!:-p

I have reallyl enjoyed the books, I read constantly and I read what I like...I really LIKE the Shades Trilogy!:8}

I've seen Levy's name floating around, and while he would appear to be the perfect choice (I've been watching him on the DWTS religiously), it might not be the wisest move for him PR-wise. I don't think his south-of-the-border fans (all 45 million of them) would "dig" S&M.

BTW, he can speak much less accented English when he chooses.
