Post Category Change-- Answers to Common Questions: browsing using item specifics, using the

Apr 14, 2004 12:19 PM
Hi All,

I thought it might be helpful to have a thread to highlight some of the concerns we've heard so far and how we are (and will be) addressing them going forward.

First, for anyone wondering how to find their favorite mystery section, or americana section, or do-it-yourself improvement books, use the drop-down selections on the left side of the listings pages in books. You'll find them here:

Product Finder

Second, there are some categories that used to exist but were not duplicated in the item specific selections sellers use to list their items. When we removed the category structure below fiction/nonfiction/audiobooks/etc., buyers could no longer get the level of granularity they used to have.

In general, we constantly try to have a balance between "not enough selections" and "too many selections" that overwhelm both the buyer and the seller. We want to make sure all subjects/genres are being utilized by both buyers and sellers, so we get concerned when we notice that few buyers are actually browsing in a particular area deep within the category structure. That said, we can devote an entire discussion thread specifically on what areas might now need fleshing out so we'll do that soon.

Third, it's worth noting again why we think this change improves buying and selling books on eBay:

* In all the testing we've done prior to launching Item Specifics and while they were active on the eBay site for the past 2 years (since last fall in books) buyers have found this tool easy to use, helpful in guiding them to items they want to buy, and most importantly improving the number of sales buyers make from booksellers on eBay. This is why we'll continue to launch these tools across eBay.com to help sellers continue to grow their sales.

* While having both item specifics and categories available at the same time helped buyers and sellers move to using item specifics, ultimately having both ways of finding items is confusing for buyers. Since the product finder is a more helpful tool to help buyers buy, we made it the primary way to find and browse within books. This change also helped sellers by removing the extra step sellers took to choose their subject/genre category, then choose their subject/genre item specific.

Fourth (and last but not least, for now) we'll be able to do more to help buyers find items using item specifics than were previously possible with the category structure. For example, while buyers find the drop-down selections more useful than the "matching categories" links, we are looking at different ways to present the product finder to combine the benefits of both tools. One test is currently running in the clothing category. Click here to see how that looks.

Also, we can now bring in search results from other parts of eBay that are outside the books category structure. For example, if you select "americana" in the collectible books drop-down, you'll find americana listings in the "books > antiquarian & collectible" category as well as the "antiques > books, manuscripts" category. This ability, combined with the ability to filter on other specifics such as printing year, format, etc. were not possible before.

Item specifics also allows us to help recommend items to buyers when they search for particular titles. Currently this is only available for items that were listed with pre-filled item information, but we're working on a solution that will work for any listing using item specifics and we can devote a whole thread to discussing that too.

Through all of this, we realize that this can be disruptive and frustrating if they require changes to buying and/or selling. We do appreciate the feedback you've given so far and hope we can use that feedback to continue to improve buying and selling books on eBay.

Please feel free to discuss below any other implications of this change and we'll continue to monitor this thread & comment.

Best Regards,
eBay Books

Saved Searches

Some saved searches may have been rerouted because of the category changes. Item Specifics can be helpful to you in creating or re-creating your saved searches, both broad and specific. Below are the steps you can take to create saved searches with Item Specifics.

If you have done this previously yourself and have suggestions to help the rest of the community, please feel free to post. If you have questions, please feel free to post those as well.

Creating a Saved Search in Books & Magazines

  • Browse to the Books Portal Page (from the homepage, click books).

  • On the portal page, select the category you would like to search in (fiction, nonfiction, antiquarian & collectible, etc.)

  • On the listings page the Product Finder should come up on the left hand side of the page.

  • Select the different values you want in the Product Finder, and click “show items”.

  • Once the listings for you search comes up, look over to the right near the top of the listings and click “add to favorites.” This link will then take you into my eBay and enable you to save the search.

  • You can also combine Item Specifics searches and keyword searches by typing a search term in the “search keywords” box in the Product Finder before you click “show items”. This will show you all the items listed with the item specifics you selected, that also have your keyword in the title.

Problem Number One: those of us familiar with drop down lists expect to be able to "control" and select multiples. This cannot be done: the drop down list allows only one selection. Thus a searcher needs to double or triple his time searching for regular items within his bailiwick.

Problem Number Two: eBay steadfastly continues to view books as if they are similar to all other commodities sold here. The only thing they have in common with other commodities sold here is that books are a commodity sold here. What makes shopping easier for tools makes shopping more difficult for books. (I shop for both). If I want a 1/8" titantium coated bullet point drill bit, it's a lot different than wanting another fast paced Alex Cross type suspense/mystery I haven't read. And you can't possibly develop a drop down list for "books I haven't read" for all your book buyers. Not and stay in business.

If it's disruptive and frustrating, why was it condidered necessary? If the Product Finder provides such important
benefits, why does it not just complement the former category
system, rather than replace it? True, it was redundant, but
redundancy in advertising is a *good* thing. And unlike the
Product Finder, no one ever complained here that the category system was confusing.

Why doesn't your Sellers Assistant software work with Item Specifics. You are charging for software that is not even compatible with your own site. It freezes and crashes if you try to use IS. I have tried all the suggested fixes ebay has given me and it makes no difference.

You I cannot use IS even though I have to. My books are lost in a sea of stuff where no one will find them except by keyword search.

The SA boards show others having this problem and Ebay seems to be pretending there is not one.

You have a big problem. I am giving this one more week.

Mrs Bees - I agree wholeheartedly with your post above. I just listed about 90 audiobooks in the past 2 weeks and found it very disconcerting not to be able to refine them furtherin Item Specifics than just "Fiction and Literature".

I hope this was just an oversight on eBay's part that will soon be remedied. I noticed that they DID refine the NON-fiction in audio books into several sub-categories even though Non-Fiction had far fewer audiobooks listed than the Fiction audiobooks.

I'm a great believer in the power of browsing - but asking a browser of Audiobooks to go through 7,000 listings under Fiction and Literature without being able to refine it any further is just too much to expect.

I also found it disconcerting that the Prefilled in some instances forced me to live with a "category choice" in audiobooks that wasn't at all appropriate.... Anyone the slightest bit familiar with Clive Cussler's works should know that showing one of his titles as "Children's Books" was pathetic. Far too much blood and gore to be listing these as "Children's books".

Product finder does not help those who want to "browse" for particular type of book, such as mystery or romance. As a buyer as well as a seller, I don't always look for a specific title. If I am looking to see romance books released in 2004, I don't want to see anything else, like mysteries. I am sure my buyers are the same. I don't see mystery, romance or science fiction, in the drop down product finder. I don't see how this change in category will increase sells. Its like a bookstore shelved all the books by author, instead of grouping similar books together by category. (mystery, horror etc.). Who wants to go through thousands of books hoping to find something interesting.

Agreed on problem #1. This was a problem with the old category structure too, in that if you were browsing within romance, buyers found it difficult to get out of the category and then go find mystery books. There were a few ways to do it, but they were not obvious.

The advantage of the product finder is that it allows you to switch between subject areas very easily without backing out (potentially to the homepage) and then diving back in.

Agreed on problem #2 as well, but because of item specifics we can get closer to your desire than before. For example, we are testing a feature where if you do like novels by a particular author you can type in that author from the eBay homepage and we'll often suggest books by that author that other eBay buyers have purchased and enjoyed. Currently this only works with items that have been listed with Pre-Filled Item Information, but we're developing ways for sellers to use this just with item specifics. One note about this feature is that because of the category changes, we had to reset some of the historical data so the suggestions are being rebuilt right now to be more relevant. Should be back to normal in a day or two.

I apologize again for any disruption and/or frustration, but we made this change because we believe that overall it will help increase sales of books on eBay. Also, we often heard that the category structure was confusing from many buyers (especially buyers new to eBay).

    quot-libros-quam-breve-tempus!

Apologies -- the seller's assistant team knows of this issue and they are working on it. From talking with them I believe that while pre-filled item info isn't required in order to list with item specifics, to the user it is difficult to get around. You may want to try talking with the live help folks about the best workarounds until this can be fixed.

    mrs_bees

Thanks for your feedback. We removed some item specifics because few buyers were using them, but we are taking input about which ones we may want to re-introduce and fiction/literature within audiobooks is one area we recognize.

    spunky

All of those genres are found under "fiction & literature" in the product finder.

SO MUCH FOR THE NEW SEARCH ITEM SPECIFICS BEING HELPFUL TO THE BUYERS AS EBAY STATES IN THEIR PROMOTIONAL LITERATURE AND THE POWERSELLER PHONE REP STATED YESTERDAY ON THE PHONE. HERE IS AN EMAIL I GOT THIS MORNING FROM A BUYER:

    "Dear alohabooks,

Hi - can you tell me what the heck is going on with eBay book listings - seems you can no longer search "Art & Photography" by subject - how stupid!
I know that you list under specific areas like Pacific Rim, but Arts and Photogrpahy was always a rewardign search until now - guess I'll just bypass th ebook section from now on!.."

WHAT DO I TELL THIS BUYER??????? CAN YOU IMAGINE NOT BEING ABLE TO BROWSE THRU A CATEGORY LIKE BROWSING THRU A BOOKSTORE? WHAT A HORRIBLE HORRIBLE IDEA TO TAKE AWAY THE CHANCE SOMEONE MIGHT STUMBLE ON A BOOK THEY WERE NOT SPECIFICALLY SEARCHING FOR. WHAT DO YOU THINK?

Why is ebay charging for a program that is not even compatible with their damn site!!!

IS has been in development for at least MONTHS. They dump it out here before their moronic programmmers can even get their crap together???!!!

I never cease to be astonished at how stupid ebay management is. I think this whole damn site is held together with duct tape.

If you can't tell I am pissed.

bookscm....I appreciate your explanations, etc. and the email you sent me personally in regard to a post on another string.

Yes...I could do like some of the others and attempt the many combinations of searches and see what IS and what IS NOT showing up in regard to my items.

I can tell you this though...as you confirmed in your email to me, you know that I already had item specifics in all of my listings...AND

    1. My counter hits are down by approximately 50%
    2. Wednesday of last week...I had 13 sales from 13 different individuals....yesterday (Wednesday) I had the first day this entire year that I did not have a sale OR a bid.
    3. I have approximately the same number of ebay auction items and ebay store items I had the previous week (over 150 auction items and 1800 store items).
    4. Today I have exactly 1 sale...I ended the auction early with the 1 bidder being awarded the win
    5. Currently the Ebay Keywords program is costing me MORE than my gross sales

Now...you can argue that there are other factors involved, and perhaps you are correct...but not to this extreme....I market ONLY on ebay....and participate in every program available pertinent to my low dollar items...Keywords, Anything Points, power seller, etc. and have a 100% positive feedback rating.

My conclusion is that SOMETHING IS WRONG here...and I am hurting because of it. I don't mind so much going through a transition stage for improvements with the idea that things will be improved. However, I am losing cash flow right now and it has come at an inoportune time....my sales are seasonal (college textbooks), but generally I sell around 5 books a day at this time of the year...and that kinda keeps the doors open. I realize that I am a very small ebay customer...and the fact that I paid Ebay over $1300 in fees for January and around $800 for February likely doesn't mean very much...but I do need a break here somehow.

Can you tell me and the others here how things are gonna get better????

    Roy

Dear E-bay: I am not one of those people who often complain about very much, but I absolutely HATE that you have removed the item specifics for we book sellers!!! This makes our items so much harder to find and I positively do not think this will help our sales in any way, shape or form!! No one is going to browse through a million items, no one has that much time!! Question: are you trying to get those of us who just use Seller's Asst. Basic to upgrade and pay more money? Please put things back the way they were!!!!!!!!!! It wasn't broken, so who's bright idea was it to fix it??? I have been so very happy with E-bay up until now and not that anyone cares, but as a small used bookstore owner in a very small town, Ebay is very necessary to help me stay in business. Please help me to do that!! Thank You

    bookscm,

All of the info you are giving us here will eventually explain how to find sub-categories using IS.

    Many of us already understand.

However, what about the buyer? Where is any of this explained either on the Search page or on the Browse page?

Also, I haven't seen this info posted anywhere on the help pages or anywhere else.

    Am I wrong?

eBay has acknowledged a Tutorial for Product Finder as a 'great idea.' Sad part is that eBay cannot pry enough of its programmers from a "Know Your Keyboard" class to sit down and actually write the tutorial.

    Sigh......
