Why is it, when I search Washington I have to add state or I get D.C. first?

It’s 35 degrees cooler here than there. The furnace has been on.

I’m guessing 3rd-year-in-a-row crop failure.

"Best Match" algorithms are based heavily upon frequency of recent search terms.  If more people search "D.C." than "State" then the D.C. matches will show up first.

I guess it depends upon its definition of “best”, loosely translated as most popular, translated as page rank, but without weighing the number of seconds, minutes or hours I stayed and looked around and where I go from there.

Except that time spent may or may not be properly weighted within the algorithm or maybe it is. I don’t know. I just know I did not get the returns I was looking for (for which I was looking).

Clever SEO can manipulate a search beyond recognition.

State should not have to be added to get (the state of, or even George) Washington first.

D.C. should have to be added to get Washington, D.C. first.

I do understand page rank and some SEO but it’s not logically right to me. It’s like I have to vote no to vote yes but since I clicked on the wrong page it gets another vote and stays higher in the rank.

Sometimes I wish machines wouldn’t try to second-guess.

A few weeks ago I was researching something and not getting the returns I needed so I tried every combination I could imagine.

I tried so many times the search engine (1st time ever) wouldn’t let me search anymore unless I entered one of those pass codes that even well-sighted people can barely read. Something to the effect: There’s too much activity and we need to verify it’s you.

I changed search engine.

I never did find the pertinent info.
