What is the Worst Condition For Selling A Book?

I opened a box of old books - a lot of children's books, Velveteen Rabbit and Ten Little Colored Boys 1942, for example and found them to have insect damage - Do I just throw them out, or can they be sold as is on ebay?

Mold is the worst condition--where it is both dangerous to the owner's health and spreads to other books.
What exactly do you mean by insect damage? It really depends on the value of the books. Cheap titles which damage are not worth messing with; expensive ones are.
Perhaps you could post some scans? --

LOL!

I've been informed by a certain west-coast bookseller that this is actually incorrect. The proper answer is, "submerged in a pail of rancid mayonnaise."

How about that book slightly chewed by the tiger?
Or the one that accidently fell into the toilet?
Of course, the worst condition for selling a book might be during a tornado.
I'm begining to think the posted Question needs a bit of clarification.

I'm begining to think bookselling can be hazardous to my health.
Might have to tack on a "hazard surcharge" to each sell.
Probably will mess up my seller dash board.

If the first two you mentioned are first printings, they are salable.
Make sure you don't ship any insects with the books,
make sure the insects are out of the books before you infest your entire inventory
(I confess I was tempted to play, as some others have done here, but the best choices were taken). Life begins at the end of your comfort Zone.

Cough. Cough! Sneeze.
It was getting a bit dry around here.
Maybe seller can sell the insects as an added bonus? Just explain they are special, rare, and imported from France.
Kudos to obie. He can stay on track.

Well there was that picture of the London book store after a German bombing run (or 12) that had no roof, no windows and no door.
I forget who put it here so many years ago--either Joe or Joel, I think.
But there were still customers. Life begins at the end of your comfort Zone.

Falling down drunk. Really, really hard to count change that way, and sometimes I tear the pages. However moderately tipsy is pretty good as long as the hors d'ouevres aren't too greasy.
(BTW, describe "insect damage," please.)

Here's part of the photo you remembered:

It wasn't Joe or Joel who posted it originally, but it was someone else with a "J" name.
His name was Jaime Frontero. I can't remember his eBay ID, but I think it was something clever.
I remembered that he contributed a few articles to The BookThinker, so I found his bio in BookThink's "About Us" section:
Jaime Frontero is an unpublished novelist who grew up in New York City amid the remnants of the old Book Row - one block from the storied Biblo and Tannen bookstore. He turned his first profit on a book sold to Mr. Tannen at age nine, in 1960. His father was an artist and his early life was spent among the bi-coastal beat crowd. He claims to have been raised as the male analog of suzuki beane. He has held various positions - both in and out of the book field - and has owned three bookstores. He currently resides in Minnesota with a daughter, a cat, several computers, his books, and a mannequin which goes by the name of Audrey.
The entire photo can be found here (scroll down):

Not entirely sure, but I think "vvet" was part of it - and that's not a "w" but two "v"'s, as in Vietnam Vet.
I lost contact with Jaime a few years ago, Michele, but a regular here (Kate, I think?) made mention of him not terribly long ago. I recall that his articles were exceptionally well received by our readers, and I was sorry when they ended. He had a gift for expressing the deeper aspects of bookselling. Also a big heart.
Re the photo - I just got back from, among other places, London, and was struck by the number of buildings still bearing the scars of the Blitz. Over 70 years ago ...

I remember the dude,
he disappeared more or less the same time gridlock passed on to better sales in that online store in the sky
perhaps he just left when the booksellers board got thrown under the bus

Thanks, Craig ... I remember now: His eBay ID was vvet and I believe a number after that ... it looked like "wet" in print but was really V Vet (as in Vietnam vet).
Jaime did have a poetic way of writing about books and bookselling.
The last time I was in London was in 1982, and I can't say I remember signs of the Blitz, but I always notice signs of the Civil War when visiting Gettysburg (bullet holes in buildings and the like).

I haven't heard from Jaime for a couple years. Last I heard he was still in Minnesota, and very involved in politics.
Another missed BSB boardie.....
