Where's The Party?
Jun 25, 2012 07:14 AM

There was one, wasn't there? Someone promised me a party when I got my book published, but I can't remember who.  Send me a map; I have a friend with GPS. LOL

Well, I just thought I'd stop in and stir things up.  I'm off to the doctor, but I'll check in when I get back.

Sure was nice to see all the familiar names still posting.

I think the Pegasi are Female river critters.  It's a must read just to discover how it is NOT related to Mythology!

Why the........ is your book not on the space's top page??

Re: Where's The Party?

There is only one Pegasus; in addition, Pegasus is a name, and thus as a proper noun would be pluralized Pegasuses in English, as people named Mouse would be pluralized to the Mouses, not the Mice.

Found the above while trying to track back to my water ladies reference... still looking for that one.

³Pegasi  is a squirrel. Surely not.

the OED has never been observant to creativity, IMO

As a pre-eminent reference work, creativity is not its mandate, but accuracy is.  ;)

Interesting info about the indie publishing world.  :)Wendy

tapestries, from what I know, at this time, there are hundreds of books self-published by Create$pace each month, most of which are much better than mine, sell better than mine, and deserve front page sponsorship moreso than mine.  Mine, also, is most definitely an erotic novel, erotica not being as openly advertized as all the other fiction genre books due to age restriction and moral taste of the general public.  It was not expected to compete with other books on an equal standing, it was not written that way, and I would not change it to do so.  It is what it is, a bit different, a bit too explicit, and a bit adventurous.  And I am a bit too happy with it.

Last week, I sent a contributor's copy to one of the main characters in the book, and he called me to tell me how thrilled he was with it.  He reads a lot, so, coming from him, it means I hit my mark.  He also wants a copy of the next Volume.  It was a goal in life, I suppose, and I accomplished it.  What more could I want?

FYI, it has nothing to do with mythology, rather the story was inspired by the drawings I did for some of the special people in my life, and features those people in an imaginary modern tale of love and human interaction surrounding an attempted murder mystery, deer hunting and geographical history of the land where I was born and raised, trust and betrayal concerning money and modern finances, a bit of magic, and explicit sexual encounters which place it squarely within the erotica category of the fiction genre.  It is undeniably a "reader beware" book, but I'll not apologize for that because it is part of the story, too.

My husband also wrote a novel and put it on Amazon but I'm not sure he's sold many copies. Years ago I published but it was in a niche field (library reference books).

I guess Drucker (and countless others) have been wrong all these years.  "One Superman; two Supermans," huh?

Nothing in English is without exception, and proper nouns are no different in this.  For those who feel that the O.E.D. is too shaky as a reference, this thern from Wikipedia:

"If the proper noun has multiple plural forms, use the pl2 and optionally the pl3 parameters, e.g. on "Snuffaluphogus":

{{en-proper noun|es|pl2=Snuffaluphogi|pl3=Snuffaluphogae}}Snuffaluphogus (plural Snuffaluphoguses or Snuffaluphogi or Snuffaluphogae)...."

Greta: if you'll read back to my post, you'll see that the O.E.D. supports your "Pegasuses" as the preferred plural (I actually numbered them), cites "Pegassi" as the secondary plural (using the second declension Greek "Πήγασος" as the root singular), and the collective "Pegasus" third ("one sheep, two sheep; one Pegassus, two Pegasus...").

Noted, fine.books, and that the whole problem appears to be the proper nouns which end in "s."

Funny, on that writer's site where I was with my book, several insisted that I was definitely wrong and a few even suggested that I change it to "winged horses."  Like I'm going to title my book Of Unicorns And Winged Horses.... Um, not in this lifetime.

keziak, what is the title of your husband's book, and what is it about?  Also, is he networking with it?  If it's fiction, I might be able to network him in with our group, get him a bit of visibility.

I was not citing the quote properly, and posted without the part where I mention that there IS a lot of discussion.  I may even have stumbled a few related old discussions. :)

Or a proper name,,,, Pegassusus and I (Grendylias), went shopping. I was not trying to correct, only interested in what it represented. Simple - Read the book.

tapestries, for discussion's sake, we were taught Zeus had a herd of winged horses, his favourite being the stallion named "Pegasus." Calibos had cast a spell upon Andromeda, intent to make her his bride, but she fell in love with Perseus who rescued Andromeda from the Kracken.  In a fit of jealousy, Calibos slayed the herd of winged horses, all but Pegasus, and because Pegasus was the last of his kind and would never find a mate, Zeus took pity upon him and put him amongst the stars.   So goes another misguided version of Greek mythology.  Fact is that we were taught there was only one Pegasus as that was the God given proper name of Zeus' winged stallion.  There are as many versions as fingers you can count, and I would imagine if you cast a net, you will hear several different ones. It is the way of things.

And it's getting too hot, so I'm shutting down until it cools off.

You all have a lovely day.

Prayers that you stay safe in all that mess.  I'm not a big fan of wild game, and especially road-kill, so I think I'll pass.  But thanks for thinking of us. I think.

I feel we need not be too strict with imaginary beings.

My Ray has begun wearing a gun to protect himself from raccons in the detached garage.. There's a possibility I can bring  Native American or Raccoon to the Feast and Fete.  Sigh!

keziak, the "big six" are not readily receptive to unknown, first-time authors in this economy, and investment dollars are not encouraged toward unproven sales and readership.  With just a bit of research, there can be found a monumental change in the traditional publishing world, along with the popularity of the less expensive ebooks and the freedom offered authors from deadlines and content restrictions, there is a notable shift toward the once-shunned indie authors.

Desktop publishing is proving to be a growing and recognized business for those with interest of having their works published with little or zero investment dollars, and the networking and word-of-mouth advertizing is proving to be as popular as print-on-demand formats for a multitude of very fine writers.

Amaz0n, Barnes & N0ble, and others in combination with such self-publishing enities as Create$pace, Lu!u, W0rdpress, and others are becoming the trendsetters of the indie authors, and offer considerable force to accomplish that which an unpublished writer desires most: to reach a reading public. In fact, stories abound in the wild of "big six" publishers seeking to sign indie authors once they have proven the worth in the self-publishing world.

I am a member of the indie author group, and proud of it. I self-published my book through Create$pace, and it is available there to the general public and on the parent company, Amaz0n dot com, and I am the sole source of signed copies, which makes me comfortable. With a bit of luck, I will be able to offer it soon as an ebook on Kindle, with designated free downloads. I am networked with other indie authors, and we all promote each other through various websites and blogs.

We're happy where we are.

HOH, congrats on getting your book published!

I wish my BIL had known about all the info you posted above.  He might have had a chance with his specialty cookbook.  Then again maybe not as he wanted to get $$$ for each copy and there were already some sort of similar books on the market for a lot less.

beesz, the competition is all in the uniqueness of the book. I can't believe I just said that on a book seller board, but it is true.  The secret to anything is to make it desireable from the consumers' point of view, make it special, make it something nobody else has to offer.  Campfire Cooking from the Range to the Backyard Grill, Succulent Steaks from Scattered Road-Kill, Squirrel Nut Stew with Real Nutses.  Mm-Mm! Make it special and it will out-sell the common garden variety books next to them.

Oh! Did I mention that a catchy title helps?

Secondly, fine.books, I will never be able to repay any debt I owe you.

I've no idea whay you'd think that you owed any debt; you certainly don't.

The squirrel wishes you a speedy recovery, and wants me to remind everyone that he has a new book coming out in August, from Random House.
