Why can't

Why can't most of the book sellers on ebay mention, in their listing, whether or not the dust jacket is available. I'm tired of emailing sellers asking them to confirm if the dust jacket is there only to not have them reply. Now, I just pass it up when a seller doesn't mention it. Don't like getting books without the DJ.

.

This is part and parcel to the reason that most "advanced" collectors deal with only a few booksellers who serve their collecting interest.  Find a bookseller or two who understands your collection's focus, and stick with them.

When I list a book on The River, a typical listing might say:  "1st printing HB with DJ in like new condition.  Tiniest of dings to back corner of DJ........."

Any faults should be described.

If the book was published without a DJ I might say : Very good condition HB with no DJ, as issued......

I do not feel the necessity to go beyond this for a book that is being sold for content.  And if I have a first printing Mark Twain I do not feel it belongs on the river.  there are other places.

You're probably preaching to the choir here as I'd like to think that the sellers who post on this board mention the presence or absence of a dust jacket.  Like the poster before me, we even mention there's not one even when there probably wasn't ever one (textbooks, some children's books, etc.).

My interests are too eccentrically eclectic and content-driven to have curators for my collections.

If you are a high-end collector, the advice about finding a few true bookephemsellers of form, conversant with The Trade is sound advice.

If you collect for content, not so much.

Be prepared to be of suspicious nature if you collect for content.
