DRIVING TRAFFIC TO MY STORE

Oct 30, 2009 11:24 AM
HI EVERYONE! I HAVE BEEN DOING SOME RESEARCH TO FIND WAYS TO DRIVE MORE TRAFFIC TO MY STORE. I CHECKED GOOGLE SHOPPING AND I SEE NO LISTINGS FROM ANYONE ON EBAY!

I READ THAT YOU HAD TO CHECK A BOX IN ACCOUNT SET UP TO ALLOW EBAY TO SEND YOUR FEEDS, BUT I CAN'T SEEM TO FIND THAT BOX ANYWHERE TO SEE IF I CHECKED IT! I WENT TO ALL THE "ACCOUNT" TABS AND SEE NO BOX TO ALLOW FEEDS. ANY IDEAS?

I DID GO INTO GOOGLE KEYWORDS AND FOUND ALL THE MAIN KEYWORDS FOR MY ITEMS AND CHANGED MY KEYWORDS TO MATCH BUT IF EBAY IS NOT SENDING FEEDS TO GOOGLE, WHAT GOOD IS THAT?

I READ THAT IF I MAKE AN "ABOUT ME" PAGE AND A "MY WORLD" PAGE WITH LINKS TO MY STORE, SINCE IT IS "CONTENT" SOME OF MY KEYWORDS MIGHT GET PICKED UP BY GOOGLE. DOES ANYONE KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT THIS?

I HEARD THAT IF I START A BLOG ON GOOGLE AND ADD A LINK TO MY EBAY STORE, THAT MIGHT WORK. DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY EXPERIENCE WITH THIS KIND OF THING?

DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY OTHER IDEAS? I WAS THINKING OF GETING A WEBSITE, USE ALL THE IMPORTANT KEYWORDS AND PUT A LINK TO MY STORE THERE. DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY EXPERIENCE WITH THIS?

THANK YOU FOR ANY IDEAS YOU CAN GIVE!!!!

Before you start trying to drive outside traffic to your store make sure you are doing everything possible to get existing eBay traffic.

Are you using Fixed Price or Auction listings to get exposure in search?

You should also have a link in every listing inviting people to your eBay store.

Also - consider not suing all caps. It makes it harder to read to descriptions.

You have some beautiful items. I will definitely be going through your store to look at everything.

Hi Faerie! Thank you for your reply. I spoke with ebay this afternoon and it looks dismal for ebay store sellers and google. I was told that ebay has not sent a feed since June 15th, ebay is no longer sending feeds and she cold not tell me when ebay might start again, so we are on our own. Now I know why sales have fallen off!!
Thank you for the caps comment. I thought it was great but it is always good to have more than my opinion!!!!
I thought the red door icon was a link to my store items. I have receintly been putting in my description for people to click on the red door. I have no idea how to put links into my listings.
Thank you for checking out my items! I try to research each one and give as much information as I can so clients can purchase with confidence. I also go to all the big antique shows down here in the Palm Beach area. We get majolica dealers from all over the US, France and England.
I did JUST have a very nice sale. I now ask myself if it was because I updated my keywords. I don't know. I think tommorow I will look into making a webpage/site with important keywords and a link to my store.
Do you have a website that you link to? What are Tags and what are they used for?

Please, if anyone else has any advice let me know.

Have a GREAT evening Faerie!

I have several websites so any web traffic is directed there. My goal on eBay is to capture the eBay eyeball. Since you have a much higher level of product it makes sense to cast your net as wide as possible.

Google changed the rules this summer. You need to go into your preference and make sure feeds are enabled. eBay is doing feeds but that doesn't mean you'll get decent placement on Google.

I'm sure Steve will be along sometime this weekend with his usual recommendations. They are good ones and include getting a domain for yourself. An easy starting point is to then point your domain to your eBay store. Then you can put that domain on all your packing slip and business cards. You can also put in a store referral credit that reduces your eBay fees. (Sally is the one that usually explains that.)

All of us around here do different things in our businesses so you'll get a round robin of information as people check in. I always recommend that people look at lots of other listings and stores. You can learn a lot by how others do things.

Your store makes me think back nostaligically on a time when I used items like you sell. I don't want to go back to that life but sometimes I miss the pretties it included.

Hmmm - I have done nothing to put my eBay items on any search engine yet the new items I listed on eBay at the first of this month are available via off-eBay searches.

Hi Paul! What searches do you look at?

I am not positive on the exact dates, but whenever eBay allowed Variation listings is when I deleted 80 items and created three variation listings. Sometime between the 1st of September and the 20th of September. New photos were uploaded on October 4 (color chip on white and black backgrounds)

If I type in the search phrase:

ccure silicone colored caulk

As of when I am posting this ...
In YAHOO search:
  • eBay products show up in 7 of the top 10 searches
  • My ioffer store has 1 of the top 10

    In Google search:
  • eBay products show up 4 of the top 10
  • My mybisi store has 2 of the top 10
  • My ioffer store has 2 of the top 10

    In Google search (shopping only):
  • The only product to show is one eBay item
(the one with free shipping on eBay does not show when that search option is checked)

    In Shopping.com search,
  • No results for my items (isn't this owned by eBay?)
    - Before the new GoogleBase revisions were released in ?July? ALL 80 of my items showed up in Shopping.com - non of them have shown up there since the revision.

    in Bing.com search
  • NO results for my items (doesn't eBay have connections here also?)

So - I do get off-eBay results. Someone is pulling my listings and throwing them around the internet. BUT - it wasn't like it was pre-July when my items were ALWAYS most of the top 10 with the above keywords. I used to get LOTS of hits from Shopping.com and Google - now, not-so-much. Between July and through September, my eBay sales were WAY down, and my ioffer and mybisi sales were up slightly. Now the other two site's sales have dropped and eBay sales are way up.

I think it is great that eBay is going to spend millions of dollars per month in advertising on TV and driving around nationwide with a mobile eBay vehicle, but I think their money for this holiday season would be better spent on getting eBay listings to show better accross the board on internet searches.

    Paul

Hi Paul, I really enjoyed your post!
Today I took a BIG leap for me and purchased a domaine name and website from godaddy. I called and spoke to a rep for 35 minutes who did all the work for me and gave me his personal work contact to be my mentor. Not bad!
I played around with creating my website today and it was quite easy! I was able to add the link to my eBay store and it worked fine. I was so HAPPY!
I will publish my website to the web on Tuesday and let you know so you can check it out and give feedback. They told me that I need to submit my website to all the search engens but it seems easy so that is not a problem.
My question is how often shoud I re-submit my website to stay in the top 20 or 40?
If you could help me computer wise with this new venture I would really appreaciate it. I am not tech savvy AT ALL which is why the godaddy deal really worked for me.
I would love to see your other web sites!
    Let me know.
    Elizabeth

    Congratulations, Elizabeth.

Although you can submit your website, the search engine spiders will find you. Once your webpage is linked to other websites (such as eBay) the search engines will find your webpages via those links.

In our first year we submitted to various places but have not since. Ranking isn't about how often you submit but how the search engine ranks your page. I've never submitted any of our specialty sites and they are gradually getting found and moving up in rankings.

Marketing is a package deal. A lot of things go into the package and you have to figure out the particular package that works for your business.

Faerie is right that over time your web site will move up the ranks. But it absolutely does not hurt to submit your site and to make sure that the search engines have your sitemap.

You can get some information about using Google to promote you web site at Google's Free Marketing Tools on hubpages.

Google Analytics can be especially helpful if you want to figure out how people find your web site, what keywords brought them there (and therefore what keywords you should perhaps focus on), what pages they landed on, etc. Google webmaster tools can help you see where your web site stands in the cosmic scheme of all things Google.

Your godaddy mentor should be able to help you with this stuff in case you have any problems, but it's really not very difficult.

    Best of luck!
    Sallie

I was able to add the link to my eBay store and it worked fine.

There are a LOT of people here that are very willing to help you with your new venture - just keep posting questions and most likely you will get a range of answers that will work best for you and your situation that you can choose from.

That is sooo cool that godaddy is giving you so much help! That is simply awesome! I don't know when they helped you link up your store items if they know that if you create your links with the "refid=store" then eBay will give YOU 75% off your final fees for bringing in outside eBay customers to your eBay site. You can learn more about getting referring credits by reading about the refid=store at: http://pages.ebay.com/help/sell/referral-credit-steps.html

    Good luck and HAVE FUN!!!

Re: DRIVING TRAFFIC TO MY STORE

    Hi everyone;

I have just tuned in to the recent string here and you have my complete attention. I have a store 'Fashionista Purses and Handbags' that is a few weeks old.

I have read everything that I can get my hands on re how to market it, which unfortunately isn't much. I bought a domain name for it right off the bat, but know not what to do with it. I see you talking about selling my eBay stuff from a website using the domain name, how do I find out how to set that up? I don't mean how to do it, just what is involved; I will probably figure out how by myself... maybe lol.

Another question I have is how do I make keywords work for me, it seems quite different than how logic tells me to approach it. Everything I tried to pick up the pace works in retrograde. I switched to all fixed price and auction, I wrote an about me page; I changed the keywords, with every change things slowed down even more, I am writing a blog too btw.

The question I want to ask re keywords is - Lets say I sell purses, cos I do... I had changed the keywords at one point to something like this:

    Fashionista purses and handbags
    handbags
    purses
    large handbags
    large purses
    leather
    black

I used these because they were common factors of phrases used in eBay search that brought people to my store or items. There was a really negative impact by that change. Also by one that was something like this:

    Fashionista purses and handbags
    handbags
    purses
    large
    leather
    black
    red

Can someone give me a hint on how best to do this? I even tried using words that are common to my product titles, nothing there either. Frrrrrrrusttttrrrratingggggg! And expensive...

My average traffic after 3 weeks is 1-2 per day.

And one more question... For now I have my domain name pointed at my eBay store. Is this a bad idea? I just can't figure out what I am doing that my traffic is so poor in spite of horrendous effort...

I always recommend that first you do everything possible to optimize your listings to get the existing eBay traffic. Once you are doing everything reasonable then look outside of eBay.

Keywords aren't about making a list somewhere. Keywords are the searchable terms you use in your listing titles and descriptions. Search engines search web pages. Each listing you have is a web page. Choose 2-3 keywords per page to concentrate on. Your description should utilize these keywords as much as naturally possible.

couple thoughts for you sapphire ...

First of all - it looks like you are in the handbag business - so instead of listing a single item of one kind, list multiples of the same item (if you have them). eBay search bumps up your listing when there is a history of sales on items, so if you start of with say 10 purses, when you sell one and have 9 left for sale on that one listing, your listing gets raised in an eBay search.

There are two benifits to this - first the history is obvious and customers can look at the feedback for the past purchases to see if others are happy with the purchase. The other is that if you list a quantitiy of one or 1000, the cost is one listing fee for all the quantities in the one listing.

Your feedback is low, so you may have to wait just a little longer until eBay allows a new member to list multiples in one listing - min feedback of 15 or 30 depending upon your situation. To find out more, click on Link.

You are doing great if you are selling 1-2 items a day. For a newbie, this is more than great - it is simply awesome! - keep doing what you are doing, learn lots of stuff - and have fun!
