Enforcement of Revised Parts of Code of Conduct

Feb 8, 2005 12:01 PM
Hi Everyone,

Thank you again for your passion re: our Revised Code of Conduct.

We recognize that several of you are discouraged by what you view as a lack of response on eBay’s part to reported listings. Please keep in mind that this is a new policy. As with any new policy/rule, we are working to educate our members before punishing them for doing something they did not even know was against the rules. So, depending on the nature of the violation, we may issue a warning prior to ending a seller’s listings.

Please note that only a certain percentage of sellers actually read this Discussion Board. I am working on other ways to communicate this revision. Thanks for your patience.

Finally, I would like to stress that eBay is in this for the long-haul, and are confident that you will witness that we are making strides in the right direction.

Have a nice day,
Lia

Thanks for the response Lia.

But what about foreign sellers? I have been told that these rules only apply to sellers from the USA.

If these rules only apply to sellers from the USA then sellers not from the USA should not be able to sell to buyers who are from the USA.

Most of the offenders of these rules come from foreign countries and until it applies to all equally ( and eBay actually enforces them ) these rules are almost useless.

"But what about foreign sellers? I have been told that these rules only apply to sellers from the USA."

But who told you this?

If true, your other points are very good ones, but I have to think it is best to wait until we know for sure this is correct before spending too much energy on it.

Hi all,

I would like to clarify the answer provided on International policies.

U.S. policies apply to any seller who lists on the U.S. site, regardless of their location.. So, if a seller from China lists an item on the U.S. site, the seller must abide by policy set on the U.S. site.

Policies may differ from site to site, just as laws differ from country to country. This is not unlike an international shopping experience in the real world - if you are on an overseas trip and buy something, it is not protected under US law. Having said this, we are working with our counterparts in other countries to ensure a safe trading experience, regardless of where the item may be listed.

You can tell if the item is listed on a non-U.S. site by the currency the bids are listed in. Items listed on the U.S. site are listed in USD.

We are very committed to creating a safe, well-lit place to buy coins. Thanks for your support.

Excellent.

So the person who told cosmic it was not applicable to non-US sellers, was mistaken, so long as the non-US seller has it listed on ebay US. Glad to hear that was the case.

Also glad to know it's a very simple matter to tell what site it's listed on. I had thought there was a seller's choice of currency, which could make it harder to tell.

venturebuyer, actually it was I that misinterpeted what Lulu told me.

Lulu thanks for clearing up my mistake.

These rules should still apply to all buyers and sellers no matter where they list from.

Taking time to educate the sellers is all well and good, but what about the sellers who weren't following the original policy - the ones who aren't listing copy/replica in the title OR description. That policy was in effect for a very long time.

The fact is that, in the past 6 weeks, I am seeing very few of my reports acted on - whether they are for the new policy or an old policy. There was a time when 75% of my reports were acted on - now, none. And action is never being taken now after the auctions close whereas it used to be (this was especially important for the 1-day auctions). It seems to me that the CCW is NOT doing its job and things are getting lax.

Ebay is NOT a safe trading venue for coin collectors and until it is, we're losing buyers. To put this in a way that eBay will understand and care about: Ebay is losing money because there are coin collectors who refuse to buy on eBay because the policies are not being enforced!

The policies are not difficult to follow and any HONEST seller with an ounce of INTEGRITY will have no problem following them. The ones who persist in ignoring the policies are doing so because they're scam artists and they will continue to act that way as long as eBay lets them.

There are specific sellers who should have been banned long ago yet have continued to flourish in the eBay setting. I am a silver power seller on another ID and I sell coins. We have managed to follow all guidelines and sell honestly.

Ebay needs to step up to the plate and start taking serious action. Improving the policies does no good unless the policies are going to be enforced.

sul9--so right you are. Ebay's bean counters can't seem to figure out how to quantify an unknown so they have lost the ability to figure out WHAT COULD HAVE BEEN.

There are so many important sellers who have dropped out of selling coins that the sight is a mere fraction of what it could be.

When I go looking for coins--there are so many listings in clear violation of ethical and ebay policies that ebay should be ashamed right now. Some of those listings actually sell--that's the really sad part. I am very dissapointed.

I noticed that also. They also just pulled 4 auctions that I reported yesterday (and actually sent me an email letting me know that they pulled them!) Maybe things really are looking up :) I sure hope so.

There is a certain seller that we have all been watching and I want to thank eBay for taking the appropriate action over the weekend in removing auctions that were blatantly against policy.

The seller in question has signed up on a coin forum and posted a lot of threats and seems to be a little scared. Way to go, Ebay! Maybe we really can get things cleaned up if we all work together! :-D

Enforcement of Revised Parts of Code of Conduct

Feb 28, 2005 12:52 AM
Man,these coin sellers on EBAY are something else, first I got taken by two men from China on some "silver coins"
Then I got screwed by some woman running "estate auctions"from Savanna,Ga.
I'm just not buying off of EBAY any more untill they can clean up these sellers.Paypal says they offer a buyer protection plan, lets see if they stand behind there word.As it stands now,I'm telling all my friends to steer clear of Ebay coins-Hey,I have a pile of useless junk coins for sale-"all looks good to me"!
what a rip-off!

Hi Pete,
You'll be happy to know that the seller you are discussing was banned from ebay a couple of days ago. Ebay is attempting to clean up the site, unfortunately it takes time and a lot of effort on the part of us members.
