Enforcement of Revised Parts of Code of Conduct

Feb 8, 2005 12:01 PM
Hi Everyone,

Thank you again for your passion re: our Revised Code of Conduct.

We recognize that several of you are discouraged by what you view as a lack of response on eBay’s part to reported listings. Please keep in mind that this is a new policy. As with any new policy/rule, we are working to educate our members before punishing them for doing something they did not even know was against the rules. So, depending on the nature of the violation, we may issue a warning prior to ending a seller’s listings.

Please note that only a certain percentage of sellers actually read this Discussion Board. I am working on other ways to communicate this revision. Thanks for your patience.

Finally, I would like to stress that eBay is in this for the long-haul, and are confident that you will witness that we are making strides in the right direction.

Have a nice day,
Lia

I can add a second to this complaint. I have been complaining and even quoting specific offers from specific sellers, to no avail. I have never even had the courtesy of a reply to my complaint. I suspect that the sales fees are worth more than their reputation is to them. You are taking a huge chance when ever you make bids on an offer from a seller in China. I currently have a list of over 100 different fakes that I've come across in the last 3 or 4 years, and I still see them offered every day on e-Bay. I always ask seller if coins are magnetic, a sure sign of a fake. Be aware! 1/2d

Recently a Chinese seller listed and sold a large number of high value Chinese gold Panda coins on ebay.com. I won many of those auctions. Now the seller is unregistered on ebay.com and the items are gone. Attempts to contact ebay remain unanswered. Paypal has a tracking number from the seller but according to other ebay members this looks like fraud. Paypal says the case is closed since a tracking number was provided. This is all quite confusing.

You've been ripped off. I hope that you back your PayPal with a credit card.

You have to talk to a real live person at PayPal. If they don't give you satisfaction, you must demand to speak to a supervisor.

After that, you have to write 1000 times, "Never buy anything from a seller in China."

By the way, if you keep buying Chinese bullion on eBay, this is going to keep on happening. Heck, maybe some of the stuff that was delivered is counterfeit. That seems to be the #1 complaint on the DB at the moment.

P.S. I notice you're paying huge premiums for 1 oz. silver bullion. Can't you do better in the real world? Pardon my ignorance, but $128 for an ounce of silver?

Why does ebay continue to allow fake, phony, clones, copies etc of real coins on the Bullion Sale Site??
Does not appear ethical. Of course, ebay never worried about that.

Re: Enforcement of Revised Parts of Code of Conduct

I am very new to this hobby and thinking maybe I should get out before I get started.

I have been looking at a lot of auctions for Morgan Dollars and Peace Dollars

One auction that seems way too good to be true is this one: 140359114639

The guys name is coinsmyhobby and he' s offering a 1894 -P Morgan, but in his listing, he mentions nothing in the title about it being a 1894-P, it just says 1894 Morgan. Also, his auction is only for 1-day and it's a private listing with bidders names hidden. Also, in his listing description, he states "No Return" but in his other coin listings, he doesnt specifically mention this in his description. The pics also look too good to be true. Why would this seller offer this coin without mentioning its the 1894-P, why for only a 1-day listing, why private, when some of his other auctions arent private, and why does he specifically type out "No Returns" like another winning bidder is going to return another 1894-P Morgan that looks as good as that one ?????

Just seems way too good for me with way too many Red Flags, so I avoided it.

Did I do the right thing or miss out on a great coin ?

Having fought the counterfeit fight in Canada, I have learned the differance between Ebay.com and the entities in Europe. However, I still see counterfeit coins that appear on Ebay.com and Ebay.ca but originate in Germany. Hence when I report the German seller of a counterfeit coin....it falls on deaf German ears....and still remains available on Ebay.com and .ca. Policies contradict each other. Regards Mike Marshall

You did the right thing. On eBay, if there is any question, there is no question.

For coins, don't bid on one day auctions. Don't bid on private listings. Don't bid if they say "No Return." Don't bid on any item that can be counterfeited from Asia.

By the way 1894 and 1894-P are the same.

My suggestion, if you're at all interested in collecting coins, is to start at a bookstore: Coin Collecting for Dummies and the Red Book are the first two books to buy. Read the first one and glance through the second and then come back here for further advice.

The cost of the books will be made up for by not buying a single bad coin.

There are a couple of other books I normally recommend, but the first two will get you started. I'm also going to bump up The New Coin Scam thread for you to look through for many good tips on other red flags.

On that 1894 dollar... your instinct is good. One day auctions are used to get something sold before someone discovers and reports the listing and it gets pulled. Why would you let a valuable piece like this only get 24 hours of exposure? Obviously a 7 day listing would be seen by more people and bring more money. Private listings are often used to prevent someone else who discovers a fake or altered coin listing from contacting the buyer and telling them about it.

I can't say anything about that particular coin from the photo or the description. But the photo is just blurry enough, and the coin just dark enough, to hide a removed mintmark.

These are all red flags, and you did an excellent job of noticing them. There's nothing wrong with coin collecting, but collectors need to exercise even more than a normal level of caution when buying on eBay.
