Need Help Identifying Lincoln Memorial Penny

Nov 6, 2009 7:08 AM
I don't know anything about coins but I came across an interesting one in my cash register. It is a Lincoln Memorial Penny. Both sides have the Lincoln Memorial on it. The wording on the memorial is reversed. The coin is covered in what seems like dried glue on both sides, some of which has chipped away. There is a faint image of Lincoln's profile on both sides of the coin, which seems to be imbedded in whatever the glue-like material is.

The coin is not two coins glued together. This is weird. Any help would be appreciated. I have photos of the coin that I could email to anyone who wants to see it.

Thanks for your help.

Both sides have the Lincoln Memorial on it. The wording on the memorial is reversed.

That doesn't sound like a typical Magician's coin (two heads or tails glued together). But without a photo, we're just guessing...

If both sides had the memorial, where was the date?

Someone probably put another penny on top of it and hit it with a hammer.

There is no date on the coin itself. It looks like the date 1980 is part of the glue or whatever that has Lincoln's bust imbedded in it.

We have pieces like this come into the store periodically. The stuff that looks like glue...IS glue. What you have here is the center coin from a three-coin "sandwich" that was glued together. When the other two outer coins were peeled away, the reversed impressions from their designs were left in the glue stuck to each side of your piece. This isn't a mint error. Want proof? Soak the coin in some nail polish remover (acetone). The glue will disappear along with the designs, and you'll be left with a normal Lincoln Cent. Value...one cent. Sorry.

Don't blame me-I voted for the American.

the coin im talking about had a heads and tails but the memorial was stamped over the bust.

what i believe had happen is that when the pennies was being made their was a peice from the coin before that must have stuck to the coin stamper and got press into the next coin. if i had it i would show you.

Possible brockage?

Mr Shaw -

In coin collecting, brockage refers to a type of error coin in which one side of the coin has both the normal image and a mirror image of the opposite side impressed upon it.

Brockage errors are caused when an already minted coin sticks to the coin die and impresses onto another coin. Brockage is relatively rare and, in good condition, coins with clear brockage can sell for substantial amounts of money.

One can distinguish between obverse and reverse brockages. Obverse brockages occur when the previously struck coin was not ejected and gets stuck to the lower die, and reverse brockages when the previously struck coin remains stuck to the upper die.
