The GOLD Coin and Bullion thread

Feb 22, 2009 10:23 AM
Gold is more than just metal, it is a passion. It has been valued for thousands of years, even used as money -- because it is valuable. That value comes from the price paid by those who try to find it and pry it from the Earth, trading their time, their sweat, even their lives.

The chart below will show what gold is doing. Its dollar value changes constantly, so by putting the chart here, cluttering the thread with price updates shouldn't be necessary. A link to the main Kitco page is in my signature line below for a more comprehensive market picture.

There are many events that affect the price of gold. All I plan to discuss are news events of a financial nature, because there's a lot of that, and knowing what's going on is important. But since political bickering has ruined the Silver BOOM thread occasionally, I'm hoping those interested in politics will express themselves over in the Political Boxing Ring thread, not here.

This could also be a place to display gold coins. Whether anyone else does so or not, I will, because they're beautiful, and some are historical. I'll show you mine, if you show me yours. :)

OK, here's the chart of charts.......

So, YOU can drag your ultra-partisan neocon political hackery from thread to thread, but don't want any of that nonsense on "your" thread. Got it. :^O:^O

Here's some financial news, and important news, because New York is not the only financial capital of the Free World, London is another. And the staunchest ally of the United States, the United Kingdom, like many other countries, has financial problems that rival those of the USA.

There will be rumbling soon from there, because their large banks are under pressure. The Royal Bank of Scotland (thrifty people, the Scots) is owned largely by taxpayers. And it will be announcing a big loss, among other things happening.

Here's a link to the details. The gold price tends to react to such events, and it should be interesting to see what happens.

Good idea for a thread.
Here's an early gold coin - or to be more specific; electrum, an alloy of gold and silver.

Electrum coins were common during the first hundred years of coinage. By 400 BC, more and more Greek city states went over to silver and pure gold. Many of them adapted to the Attic coin standard Link

Well, that was fast. There are people out there interested in disrupting threads. Most of them hide behind false IDs, with a feedback of zero. I'm just going to keep ignoring them, and suggest others do so, also. Just click the link under their ID, and they're gone forever. :)

So, how about a coin with a history? Gold of course!

Here's the history:

Two of these tiny dollars (images enlarged, of course) were recovered among the treasure from the S.S. Winfield Scott, which sank in December 1853. That confirms that these coins were struck in that year, and that they did circulate as money.

This one is an MS62, in a PCGS holder, which is the only safe way to buy these things, since there are more fakes and imitations by now than were ever made originally.

It is ignorant and arrogant to ignore.

Hello, there, Svein. eBay hiccuped, so my dollar got posted twice. I have self-reported the duplicate, because I don't have two of those. You can do the same, if you like. Nice piece of elektrum (electrum, if you prefer). It illustrates just how long gold has been used as a medium of exchange, even before the ancients figured out how to refine it.

Well, that's two from my ignored list. They are writing in invisible ink, as far as I'm concerned. Nice try. :)

Don't mind those two idiots, Henri.

They have tried and tried to ruin this discussion board, now they are using every sockpuppet ID they have to moan over the ignore button being used.

I like your 1 dollar. Wish I had one like that. I have a more common issue:

LOL

Sorry.
I thought that was funny.

I don't have any coins of that type to share, but I will enjoy the pics of others' coins.

Here are photos of the coin in my last post, and a fake.
The fake in question is a poorly made one. One of the most obvious tells is the letter on Libertys neck, which often lack on the fakes.

One reason gold has value is that the supply of it is finite. And from what I've been reading, adding to the existing supply is not getting any easier. By now, most people have heard about the depletion of oil, and the fact that locating new oil fields of significance is getting to be a rare event.

Gold (and no doubt other things the global economy needs) is no different. Mining is an energy hog, and a messy business. Care to guess how much gold the largest company produces? It may be less than you think. It's less than I thought, anyway. ;)

Hi Svessien,

You can sure see the differences on the fake. Is it correct weight (i.e. is it struck in 0.900 gold - a "numismatic fake"), or something else?
