The New Coin Scam Thread

Sep 23, 2007 7:30 PM
Rather than having a couple of dozen threads discussing the various scams perpetrated in the eBay Coins and Paper Money category, I thought that it might be a good idea to just discuss them on one thread that can be bumped occasionally in order to keep it to the top of page one, rather than having to continually bump the many other threads. I think that this would provide a great service to the new people coming to the C&PM board for the first time and make them aware of all of the pitfalls that await them when they go to purchase coins on eBay.

Since the original Coin Scam Thread has been relegated to the basement in order to let it die, I think that it is time to start a new Coin Scam Thread, since so many people found the original to be helpful.

I am under the impression that the mods would prefer that we discuss the TYPES of scams being run in the Coins & Paper Money category on eBay rather than individual scams, so PLEASE DO NOT post eBay Item numbers. TIA for your cooperation.

i-hate-slabs,

If you should come over here, would you please be kind enough to repost your definition of Shameless Self-Slabbers along with your current list? I would greatly appreciate it, as I do not wish to fill this thread up with copy and paste posts from the old thread. I would rather have people repost any information in their own words. TIA.

The New Coin Scam Thread

Sep 23, 2007 7:53 PM
I didnt read this before I posted my thread, but I'll look at the sites. By the way, my second ever coin purchase was a scam. I bought 3 lots, and it took one month to get them to me, and it was, seriously, pocket change. With the exception of a 2003 proof nickel in a zip-lock baggie. When I tried to leave feedback, the user was no longer registered. They also had less than 40 feedbacks. About a week ago i was surfing and came across the SAME picture and item discription. But the user was different, and also was a brand new seller, with very low feedback. No matter how bad I want the coin i'm after, i will not buy from anyone with a feedback lower than 300, at the least.

If we can't discuss specific auctions, what good is this place? We may as well all move over to Facebook.

Oh, wait. I suppose the PTB wouldn't mind us mentioning specific auctions containing GOOD coins.

OK, I've got the ball rolling. Now it is up to all of you to make this thread the success that the original Coin Scam Thread was.

If you need to ask a question about a specific coin, or if you need to use a specific coin as an example, please DO NOT post Item numbers. Instead use a search term in quotes and we can look it up for ourselves. Also, please DO NOT state as a fact that seller x is selling fake or doctored coins, etc. Thanks.

Search this: "Wholesale lot of collectible US coins(no reserve)". Their feedback, is decent, but they have to be selling to newbz. IN 3 LOTS I DIDNT GET A COIN OLDER THAN THE 1970'S, OTHER THAN ONE V NICKEL THAT I COULDNT READ THE DATE. I'm tellin you they are scam artists. I dont know much but i have accumulated at leats 1,500 coins in the last month. I bought books and I know whats junk and whats not.

Toolhaus.org is a great way to research a seller's negative and neutral feedback. You can find it here:

Link

They also have a great plug-in for Firefox 2 and IE7 that makes searching negative and neutral feedbacks even easier. It is called the Negative/Neutral Feedback Tool and you can download it here:

Re. Post #8,

I asked that you not use Item numbers, but instead use search terms as was done in the old thread (with some exceptions). I am trying to avoid the impression of auction interference with the pinks this time around.

Here is an example. Search "1838 Capped Bust Half Dollar reeded edge". It looks like a bargain at the current price of $43.56, with 9 hours to go. Is it? What do you think?

The "southernstargems scam report" or something along those lines would fit rather nicely over at coinscams.

southernstargems would make a great mod of such a thread and we would love to have you over at coinscams, so how about it?
