The New Coin Scam Thread
Sep 23, 2007 07:30 PM
Rather than having a couple of dozen threads discussing the various scams perpetrated in the eBay Coins and Paper Money category, I thought that it might be a good idea to just discuss them on one thread that can be bumped occasionally in order to keep it to the top of page one, rather than having to continually bump the many other threads. I think that this would provide a great service to the new people coming to the C&PM board for the first time and make them aware of all of the pitfalls that await them when they go to purchase coins on eBay. Since the original Coin Scam Thread has been relegated to the basement in order to let it die, I think that it is time to start a new Coin Scam Thread, since so many people found the original to be helpful. I am under the impression that the mods would prefer that we discuss the TYPES of scams being run in the Coins & Paper Money category on eBay rather than individual scams, so PLEASE DO NOT post eBay Item numbers. TIA for your cooperation.

"Does this happen alot on here? I see this first item listed as silver coins which they are not and I see the 1881 date for a liberty nickel which is wrong. In 1881 they were still making the shield nickel."

Yes it does, and quite often.  This is why a bidder needs to study each item they are bidding on.

Another red flag I saw was the seller stated they would "be out of town" and would not ship untill 5/24. and they do all of their posting via android phone.  On the move a lot?

And yet ebay has this person rated "Top Seller" go figure!

I see obvious doubling. But thanks for warning us. It would be a real tragedy if someone spent $1.50 apiece for quarters only worth maybe 75¢ apiece. Keep up the good work. eBay is a far safer place with you on the job!

Does this happen alot on here? I see this first item listed as silver coins which they are not and I see the 1881 date for a liberty nickel which is wrong. In 1881 they were still making the shield nickel.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Two-Liberty-nickels-1881-and-1899-silver-coins-/110879952233?pt=Coins_US_Individual&hash=item19d0f5cd69

This second listing again claims the 1976 Bicentennial Design Dollar is silver as well.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/1976-silver-dollar-Bicentennial-silver-coin-FREE-SHIPPING-/110879953717?pt=Coins_US_Individual&hash=item19d0f5d335

Doesnt seem right to me.

No one here is required to have a brain, not buyers, not sellers either.  Brainless sellers will eventually get weeded out, either through bad f/b and DSRs, or they go broke.

There's no indication in my mind that this seller is a sophistacated crook, he just looks ignorant.  On the first listing, the coin on the left is too corroded to read the date, although it looks like it might be an 1899.  The coin on the right is an 1884, and while it's an awful looking coin, that's a better date and the coin might be salvagable (we can't see the reverse, which is a whole other problem).  With the proper date in the listing, he'd have probably sold that lot for 2x or 3x that price.

The second coin, they did make 1976 Ike Dollars in 40% silver, but that isn't one of them.  I doubt this seller even knows that, they probably call any large dollar "silver dollar".

Well Jeff its not going to be much safer as I did not report him I just put it in here for others to look at and get their opinions on it. I see fuzzy photos and glare from the flash I don't see signs of doubling. I think a clear photo would have be more useful. Based on your response I must have upset you, for that I apologize, I guess I misinterpreted this thread.

Look at the reverse:

Aside from the fact that the "gouge" is obviously a hole, does that look like a 50¢ reverse to you?

I agree its good to see someone catch all the tricks and mistakes . of the thosands of scammers and counterfitters here even the smallest ones can lead to bigger scams. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and questions on listings.

Just because you can't see the obvious doubling doesn't make him a scammer. It just means that you aren't qualified to pass judgement on such things.

"Based on your response I must have upset you"

Your take on my response to your post is just as mistaken as your take on the auction in question. To be "upset" by anything posted here, I'd have to invest emotion in what goes on here. Truthfully, I don't care what goes on either here or in the auctions.

The people I know in the real world who sell on eBay simply put coins up for sale and sell them. They rarely talk about it. It's just not that interesting. The place I work at has items up for sale constantly. I almost never look them up. A 1921-D Mercury dime, that I found in a small bag of junk silver we bought, just sold here for $110. I found out about it after the fact. We sold a medal here that I researched. It sold for $85 or so. I didn't know that we'd put it up for auction. I even forgot what we paid for it. I think $10, because my boss wanted to put a $20 price on it. I did the research post purchase simply because I didn't think that it would sell from our display case. It looked like one of those items that I'd have to take out and show a lot and explain and would never sell.

Anyway, don't let me dissuade you from pointing out what you think are scams.

The fifty cent piece added a statement at the bottom that admitted his mistake and corrected it as being a twenty five cent piece. I agree he should have changed the title but at least he put in a correction.

there were already two bids when he added that statement... once an item has bids you can't change much, including the title... you can pretty much just add to the description...

I did not know that, thanks for the info. He did offer to let them out of the bid without a hardtime. I guess he was trying to be fair. I don't know all the ins and outs of the auctions. I have not messed with them enough to understand much. I see reserves and don't know how to set them. I don't know how to cancel a listing. I posted a coin and decided I didn't want to sell it because its condition was too poor so I just put a crazy high starting price on it so no one would bid on it and the time would run out. The site would not let me delete it because it was in an auction format is what I think it told me. Anyway it didn't sell thankfully and I tossed it in with the rest I don't know what to do with and there it sits.

Same thing happened to me and two others. We are all contesting the decision of PayPal. They do not protect the seller. One of the three sellers is an attorney.  My coin went to a Tomita San. I am filing in small claims court this coming week. EBay and PayPal should inform members with names and addresses of people who commit fraud but they don't care as long as they get their seller fees and PayPal fee. How did you handle this?  My email is rtjlands@aol.com.

Sorry for the delayed response, Bill. What with work and helping the girl move across the bay, I missed this very sad news.

At least her suffering is over and, I truly believe, she is still with you in spirit and will always love you and, if you ask her, will help, guide and protect you to the best of her ability.

I know that this is weak comfort to you now, but I hope it helps you in some small way.

In any event, you are in my thoughts and in my prayers. You have always been a gentleman here, even when provoked. Thanks for your help and presence here. You are appreciated, perhaps more than you know.

Not odd at all.  Posting rules prohibit using a ebay ID in the title (and maybe in the OP too) of a thread.

If you started a new thread titled "fraud alert" or something like that and only included a link to an auction, that would be more likely to survive.  Then you can mention the seller in the next post.

SELLER ID: SUPERBOY1000

SELLER OF FAKE COIN AND STAMPS.

PLEASE DO NOT BUY FROM THIS FRAUD!!!!!!

I LOST $280 PLUS THE MONEY IT COST ME TO HAVE THE FAKE COIN GRADED THROUGH NGC....

SELLER SAID HE WOULD PAY ME ONCE THE COIN WAS RETURNED , BUT THE ITEM RETURNED 3 DAYS AGO.

NONE OF THE ITEMS THIS SELLER SELLS ARE REAL. MOST OF THEM ARE IN FAKE PCGS AND NGC HOLDERS.

MANY BUYERS SINCE I LAST BOUGHT THE COIN FROM THIS SELLER HAS OPENED CASES TO GET REFUNDS FOR THESE FAKE ITEMS, YET HE TURNS AROUND AND RESALES THEM TO UNSUPECTED BUYER THINKING THEY ARE REAL.

SOMEONE NEEDS TO PUT A STOP TO THIS FRAUD AND I PRAY IT IS SOON. IT IS AGAIST EBAY POLICY TO SELL FAKE COINS. HE DOES NOT PUT THE COINS ARE REPLICAS IN HIS DISCRIPTION. HE KNOWINGLY POST THESE COINS AND WHAT I DO NOT UNDERSTAND IS HOW IS IT HE HAS AN ACTIVE SELLERS ACCOUNT?

Hi,

A good way to avoid this kind of situation is to stay away from sellers who are from Malaysia (like superboy1000) or any other shady countries where scamming people is a national sport. If I want to buy a US coin I shop in the USA.....

It's sad to say but con artists are everywhere our days, including on eBay and for as long as they pay their fees in full and on time... well you've got my point.

I'd have to agree with that... buying expensive coins from most Asian sellers is rolling the dice - and they're loaded!

That said, I don't see any neg.s on that seller's account, so I don't know what happened there... if he's sitting with 100% f/b rating, that isn't exactly sending a message to anyone that they should be cautious!  I didn't review the listings in total, but the one slab he had current was a pretty tiny pic... sort of hard to tell anything about the authenticity from that.  That's at least 2 red flags...

I'm not sure how the buyer there got scammed for his money either, unless he let the thing go past 45 days and failed to file a dispute to get his money back.  If he paid with a credit card, he could still maybe do a chargeback and get his money back that way.  There are pretty decent protections for buyers on eBay these days, but if you won't use any of them, they aren't much good.

I agree with this also, coins were put into a roll, they have been searched. I just love those sellers that put a hard date or nice coin on the ends and get 90% more than what the coins are worth, yet I continue to see buyers pay for this Junk.

I think that this Misleading Practice should not be allowed.
