The New Coin Scam Thread
Sep 23, 2007 07:30 PM
Rather than having a couple of dozen threads discussing the various scams perpetrated in the eBay Coins and Paper Money category, I thought that it might be a good idea to just discuss them on one thread that can be bumped occasionally in order to keep it to the top of page one, rather than having to continually bump the many other threads. I think that this would provide a great service to the new people coming to the C&PM board for the first time and make them aware of all of the pitfalls that await them when they go to purchase coins on eBay. Since the original Coin Scam Thread has been relegated to the basement in order to let it die, I think that it is time to start a new Coin Scam Thread, since so many people found the original to be helpful. I am under the impression that the mods would prefer that we discuss the TYPES of scams being run in the Coins & Paper Money category on eBay rather than individual scams, so PLEASE DO NOT post eBay Item numbers. TIA for your cooperation.

I want to thank you all . I am a fairly new buyer of coins and was having trouble  but as i have been reading posts on discussion board  I have learned alot.  i have gone from buying coin lots to buying coins from chinese sellers.  I have to say that when you find a good chinese seller they are wonderful to deal with. They will work with you  and actually offer to give you more time to pay.  this is smart on their part because it then ties me in on my purchase so when i get paid i do not change my mind and buy elsewhere.  I get these coins graded so i know they are okay. I do have a  ebay dispute with one buyer. I do not know what possessed me to buy these.  All the warning signs were there.  I think i wanted to catch them.  But i have 5 dealers i buy from and I LOVE their customer service and willingness to have a happy customer.

Check out some of those Chinese sellers on T.H.  The few that I checked all seem to be "reformed" (meaning that they have been able to avoid too many negs. in the past 12 months) scammers.

Actually the three coins i bought from that seller have been reported to ebay as fake and I have recieved a full refund.  If you read what i posted I said I had filed a dispute and that i wanted to catch these guys as if you look they have sold many of these type coins with no complaints.  I do a lot of buying off Ebay at other coin sellers.  But I hate to see the good guys get a bad rap fronm these guys.  I AM GOING TO GIVE NEGATIVE FEEDBACK TODAY  but I wanted to get my refund first.

I just left negative feedback to xian antique.  they sold me three fake counterfit coins.  they also did not respond to my communication with them.  i filed dispute and it took three days for response.  Ebay pulled one of the listings the day after purchase and I ASKED THEM FOR REFUND AND THEY IGNORED ME AND SHIPPED ITEM ANYWAY.  So I hope my negative feedback helped someone not to buy from them. they have a lot of happy customers buying from them.  So if anyone wants three chinese coins for educational purposes let me know I will ship them to you.

...has become one of Ebay's most trusted and reliable sites. We work hard to bring only quality items to auction every week. We have a steady return of buyers each week and if you look at our feedback you'll see words like integrity, honest and fast. So put us on your favorites list and check back with us from time to time - you won't regret it!!

Isn't that special...?

Re: The New Coin Scam Thread

ted_200. I went after this seller (another boatload of china stuff) a while back. He was listing fake TD's with pretty much the same description, although he neglected to say that they were "replica". At the end of the auction he actually E-mailed me asking me if I knew it was a fake. I reported him to Ebay who did not remove his listings nor did they remove him as they should have. The account that he is using there is not his only selling account either. He should have been removed for listing the replicas alone, not to mention trying to pawn some of them off as real. Just a side note, he sent me a FB revision shortly afterwards asking me to change my feedback left. My response to Ebay was basically "You got to be kidding?"

Re: The New Coin Scam Thread

*smedley*

I had also been busting his chops a little when I noticed one note of his that he had doctored. With the others popping up, I sent him the following question:

"Obviously you are a good doctor. Seeing this and other notes in their pre-fixed state and their auction states. I have some hopeless notes that I would like to turn pretty like this too. Do you have classes?"

Being the innocent & inquisitive buyer that I am, I had a great interest  ;)

I got a rather rude response that kind of hurt my feelings:

"Dear allstonbuys,

You have SEVEN feedbacks and four of them have been removed!! The most expensive item you bought was $40!! I have NEVER altered any notes. I would never do that. It looks like someone put you up to harassing me."

I don't think the doctor is a nice guy :|

I sell a lot of currency and nothing pisses me off more than a currency doctor. Ebay really needs to shut his scam down before people buy that carp. Since I saw someone post here that can get this guy booted I will now refrain from busting his chops. Hopefully he will be history soon.

Re: The New Coin Scam Thread
Aug 12, 2012 08:16 AM

I think my innocence got to him. He replied right away to me again.

"Dear allstonbuys,

Listen, I honestly do not know what you are talking about. I am an old man who had a stroke and started selling on Ebay to put bread on my table. I have 5 kids. I get 90% of my notes on consignment. I look them over and grade them myself. I have learned that most raw notes on Ebay have been altered in some way or another. I DO NOT ALTER NOTES. I don't know anyone who does alter notes. I offer 100% refunds to my buyers. Not sure why you have a problem with me but I suggest if you want to buy currency you buy only graded notes. Take care"

So it seems that he is an innocent "consignment" seller that has had someone feed him all of these doctored notes to sell for them. If I knew hot to do polls, this would be a good time to do one :-D

1) Seller is a poor duped guy who got stuck with bad notes from a scammer.

2) Seller is now running for cover having been outed.

3) Seller could care less whether the community knows as he feels that EBay will let him push his evil wares.

4) Allstonbuys is a bad, bad man who picks on seller who has had a stroke and is trying to feed his 5 kids.

I have decided not to reply to his last E-mail and will leave him for the powers to be to deal with him.

And one last thing, just to clarify things a bit. I had wanted that $100 star note. Stars are a favorite of mine. I research raw notes as fully as I can and thus found the original scam. When I checked a few more places I found that he had been outed already for this activity. I do not go around picking on sellers as a hobby.

Check out this one: The seller lists 5 kennedy half dollars--1 1964 and 4 1965 and describes the lot as "sterling silver." In 1965, kennedy's were only 40% silver, a far cry from the 92.5% silver content required for the "sterling" standard. BUT the seller classifies the lot as 1964 so all the product reviews are about the one coin with 90% silver content. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=120966244803

Another apparent currency transformation...

Purchased July 6th for $449.99

This note, with its obvious staining, was described by the seller as having "very fine details".

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&_trksid=p4340.l2557&hash=item5894a47ae7&item=380450929383&nma=true&pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&rt=nc&si=hBTEPt91Z3BY8bLDbpknm%252Fb7FqI%253D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc#ht_1452wt_1398

Listed July 22nd and sold july 29th for $946.

Item description states this item is a "superb high grade note".

I do not see any staining.

The problem also is, Ebay,,  there policy went out on may 31st about which grading companies are acceptable , and which are not,, but unfortunatley with the  raise in Fees and final valuation fee, theyre bottom line on profits come before , the consumers protection..  the Self Slabbers like "INB" THAT GUY IN MINNESOTA, whom has over a 1000 listings  up generates over $10,000 a month in ebay fees so yes they look the other way, while novice collectors are getting the shaft.

Then there are Sellers whom are now on the trendof selling

"GSA" which stands for  Genuine Specialist Authentication company  and not  the "GSA" recognized by collectors as Goverment Service Administration  which we all know have a high intrinsic numismatic value, so the unscrupolous sellers are  dumping over graded coins at MS66 MORGANS , AND PEACE DOLLARS  onto the beay market when they are just polished self slabbed coins with no graded value. to the novice collectors  and consumers.  EBAY  needs to hire,  trained  graders, to keep an eye on unscrupolous activity  such as that,  ive reported over 50 items  the past 3 days, and wil continue to do so, when i see any " INB" OR "GSA" LISTINGS, and self slabbers portraying coins of high grades, when they are junk coins..
