Hate the discussion board format? Wish there was a place to have a running chat like in the old ebay chat rooms that they took away?
Here is the solution, one thread devoted to chatting about anything and everything about coins all in the same place.
Post whatever is on your mind. There is no official topic here. So let's get the chatting started.

thanks b4, but it's a bit on the overpriced side for me...
if my thinking is correct, it's about 3x overpriced... We now see the results of groupthink in the largest cities of the republic formerly known as the greatest country in the world.

I guess that makes a good argument for Certification OR for not bidding if you don't know for sure.

it's a cent that somebody tried to make the size of a dime to cheat a vending machine...
I'm not so sure about that. The appearance of the lettering in the motto near the edge isn't right for that to have happened, and the reverse weakness oppostite the bust indicates strike weakness from a severely undersized (thin) planchet. At least that's my first impression...
But then it occurs to me it could have been run through a rolling mill, which would have flattened the design opposite the bust, and the odd flash metal visible in the reverse photo isn't right either. So I'm conflicted, and don't have time to go reanalyze it right now.
One thing I'm sure of is it isn't a "copper dime", it isn't rarer than a 1943 copper cent, and it isn't worth a grand.

OK, I looked at it again briefly, and the side of Lincoln's head isn't flattened enough to have produced that degree of flatness on the reverse from a rolling mill. But the apparent bent flan that's visible in the reverse photo is still troubling to me, and I'm less than 50% on this being an error, and more than 50% on it being post mint damage.

i think the ghost image on the reverse is from either being squeezed in a vice or smacked with a hammer... i'm leaning towards hammer as i don't think slow pressure would do that...
as for the diameter, there's any number of ways to do that... We now see the results of groupthink in the largest cities of the republic formerly known as the greatest country in the world.

I heard that people who collect dice have lice.
When you said you collect dice I ran a completed listing search for highest price first to see what the high end of the market was. A pair of old bakelite dice can sell for a few hundred dollars. I mentally filed that fact away as something to be on the look out for. If I find any I'll buy you a beer.
For anyone who doesn't know what bakelite is, it's an old form of plastic. It's main use seems to be as a tool to seperate collectors from large amounts of their money.

LMAO
i stay far away from any listing that says it's bakelite... dice, jewelry, whatever...
maybe once i learn how to tell for sure what's bakelite and what's not i'll change, but until then, no thanks... We now see the results of groupthink in the largest cities of the republic formerly known as the greatest country in the world.

Here's some dice porn for you. When you posted about dice the first time I checked my desk draw and came up with this. Odd dice from when I was a kid (the 80's). The two old ones appear to be wood. The two small ones might be somewhat unique but if I ever knew what they went to I don't remember anymore.
There are probably some valuable dice in this house somewhere. Finding them is the difficult part.
I threw a rare error SLQ into the picture to keep it on topic. What do you call the mint error where the coin is smashed and bent?

Actually on further consideration the small ones were probably part of one of those pocket size travel board games that were popular to keep the kids busy on long car rides. On the first pothole the pieces would go every where and you'd spend the rest of the trip trying to find them. You'd reach between the back and bottom of the seat which was usually loaded with broken glass from the last time someone broke in to steal the radio. While you were bleeding profusely a toddler in the car would find a few pieces to swallow and start turning blue. It was fun for the whole family.

Good Morning Everyone,
Thanks for the stroll down memory lane Johnny. I remember some some pretty intense fighting to go along with everything else. Hitting and screaming and pulling hair. Before you knew it you were there. Unless your folks kept they're threats and "Turned the car around".
Not to clutter up an otherwise serious thread, I was wondering what version of "The Prisoner" to watch?
The prisoner was a great show by the way anyone who hasn't seen it should downlo... I mean buy it from a legitimate retailer.

part of the problem is that i don't have a known good piece of bakelite to compare sound/smell/weight/feel to... We now see the results of groupthink in the largest cities of the republic formerly known as the greatest country in the world.

Hey, where'd my reply go???? That'll teach me to use spell check.
Anyway I noticed that all the tests are sennsory (sp) and you have to be in physical (sp) posession (sp) of the (sp) item to make a determination (sp). Not much help for online purchases.
