Best buy as in most for the least? An 1875 Indian Head Cent MS64RB for $40... I bought it unslabbed. I also got a 25 rouble 1oz palladium coin for $200... he had 2 of them and I could kick myself because I only bought one...

At a country auction, 11 circulated Kennedy halves came up for bid. All the bidders were working from want lists, so bidding was slow for these unremarkable items. $3 was bid. $3.50 was bid. And that was it. So I bid $4, and won! $5.50 in legal tender for $4! OK, it wasn't what you'd call a real killing, but nonetheless............

A leather pouch containing a mixture of older foreign coins. Mostly junk, except for the 1786 New Jersey cent and a Machin's Mill counterfeit George III half penny.

My best find was a 1742 1 Reale. I paid ten cents for it out of 10 for a dollar foreign coin bin. It was my first 18th century coin.

A 1917-D AU-58 Standig Liberty Quarter. At the time, neither I, nor the seller knew much about the coin. I bought it for $3, just a few weeks ago I sold it on e-bay for $200!

1894-P Morgan Dollar BU for $50.00. Bought it with money I made on my paper route in 1972. My mom gave me a hard time about it. She couldn't understand buying a dollar for fifty dollars!

1942/41-P Mercury Dime in AU. My brother received this coin in change on his paper route in 1966. I bought the coin from him a few years ago for $100.00.

1937 3 leg buffalo. Found in a roll of nickels about 25 years ago.

1981-S Type-2 Proof set for $14.95 from a local coin shop. Broke it open, sold the Susan B. for around $185.00.

I went to a farm auction and bid on a three ring binder of world coins. I paid $50 for it and kind of wished that I hadn't bid so high on it. I got it home and went through the coins annd figured that all together, they MIGHT bring the $50. In the back there was a pocket in the binder with two big envelopes. I opened the first one and out came a 2 reale from the sunken ship Atocha. It had the paper to prove it. In the second one was a 8 reale ( also known as a "peices of eight" ) from the same ship wreck. It too had papers. I sold the other coins for $65, the 2 reale for $350 and I still have the peices of eight. :^)

i love these stories of everyones!

here are a good one and a bad one, both from estate auctions that just happened to have a few coin lots:

1. small group of 20 or so wheat cents in a plastic bag.....did not see them before the auction......bought them cold for $2 as a lark.....pulled out a 1909 s vdb in vg out of that bag........apparently no one else had looked at them either

2. group of approx 100 2x2ed silver washington quarters.....spot checked a couple of dozen.....all common circulated coins someone had wasted their time 2x2ing.....i bid them up to just over the silver value and quit.......the winner pulled a BU 1932d out of that lot!....i still kick myself for not going thru each and every quarter!
