My favorite parts of the Comics Board FAQ are the Grade 'n' Value and the Know-It-Alls links. There are lots of good information and ideas there.

One thing missing, though, is a link that would bring the casual websurfer to this addictive board.

A great FAQ link, indeed. But is there a section that explains what CGC is? Some of us have just returned to collecting after a few years of being away from it (or maybe only I have :) ).

Mordo A link to the Threaded Board is a given, eventually... Maybe just email akashoeman, the Keeper of the Board, to give him a little reminder? Feel free to make other suggestions, too...

Lou yes, under "Know-it-alls" there's a slabbing link that goes down that page.

Thank you very much, Hey Kids. That answered any question that I might have had regarding CGC and more.

Re: Comic Book FAQ - Info for both Veteran and Newbie

Hmm... Looks like this is becoming the default Comics Board FAQ thread, so I'll answer a few questions and throw out a couple things I put forward under one of the "Collectibles" threads...

Yes, the CGC is dealt with under the "Hey, FAQ You" section (the general Q&A section). The info is basic, but there's also a link to the "Know It Alls" section in which there's more in-depth analysis of the pros and cons of the service. I'm always looking for more info and opinions, however... The FAQ is and ever shall be a work in progress. Which brings me to my next point!

As maintainer of the FAQ, I'm constantly working on keeping it topical and up-to-date. For example, the section on "Grade 'n' Value" is about to undergo a small revamp. Currently, that section is based on a general consensus culled from various industry standards, including the OGG and Paul Adams' on-line grade guide (sorta-kinda like what the CGC claims to have done, but we've actually made ours public). It's somewhat conservative, but we decided to err on the side of caution as it's there more for beginners. However, I'm currently looking to recruit a fellow who's developing the first on-line grade calculator to contribute an additional "post" on grading using strict Overstreet standards. In other words, there's always room for improvement and new information.

With the advent of this new threaded Comics discussion board, I can see already there's new voices that should be heard and new info specific to the peculiarities of this forum that should be added (I'll be slapping up that link you suggested probably later today). So I have a favor to ask of the people posting here to the "Longbox"... submit something! Here's how you can help contribute to keeping the Comics Board FAQ one of the best board FAQs on eBay and arguably the best FAQ on the 'net for information specific to buying and selling comic books here on eBay:

"Hey, FAQ You" - This is simply answers to frequently asked questions. The need for it arose on the other Comics Board due to the fact that it only holds 200 posts, and can often scroll entirely within a couple of hours. If, after looking it over, you spot a common question that isn't answered, submit it along with an appropriate answer. Please take note, however, of the operative words "frequent" and "common"... we don't want to overwhelm newbies seeking simple answers with minutia or extraneous information.

"Grade 'n' Value" - As I said, this section is currently undergoing--if not a complete renovation--a slight expansion. Any and all input is appreciated.

"Misc-ing Links" - See a publisher, newsgroup, or outstanding recourse/reference link that's been missed? Send it on in!

"Going Postal" - Think we've got this one pretty well covered, but again comments and suggestions are welcomed.

"OG Artwork" - This section needs major help. The info we currently have on obtaining sketches from cons and other sources is good, but I'd really like to see it expanded on to include (among other things) info on the specific differences between such things as color guides and finished pages, etc. Also info on what exactly to look for when cruising eBay original comic art auctions. Value, the art of collecting art, you name it...

"Great Read!" - This is a biggie. A new section we're just getting ready to introduce, this is where we'd like to point people for suggestions on what comics are worth checking out. Needed is the following in the following format: For children, for first-timers, for returning readers, and off the beaten path (indie, adult, unusual, underground). Please make note of specific runs, titles, issues, and whether or not it's been collected in GN or other trade editions (this'll make it easier for people to track down). We'll also be linking to Wizard's guide to the top 100 comics.

"Post It Notes" - Right now, this section is specific to the "norms" and "netiquette" (eBay's words, not mine) of t

Re: Comic Book FAQ - Info for both Veteran and Newbie

Guess this board truncates posts! Here's (hopefully) the rest...

"Post It Notes" - Right now, this section is specific to the "norms" and "netiquette" (eBay's words, not mine) of the original Comics Board. Needless to say, while some if not much of it may apply here, it would help to have a section including and expanding on eBay's policies regarding the threaded boards. I'm a newbie myself when it comes to this forum, so any and all input would be greatly appreciated. (Chaos? Kali? Mordo? These are names that spring immediately to mind that I started to get to "know" over under Collectibles... Anyone wanna take a crack at this?)

"Know-It-Alls" - Here's your chance to really shine. This section is devoted to observations on our hobby, additional information that goes beyond the general FAQ, you name it (I'm particularly fond of the sections on restoration and pedigrees submitted by Matt Nelson). Right now I'd really like to see more on the CGC... What's there is great, but much of it is outdated and probably a little biased toward the anti-CGC camp. Not that I'm looking for pro-CGC stuff, necessarily... I'd like to see some impartial and better balanced material. But really, anything applicable to our hobby and eBay is fair game for submission (except anything anti-sniping... sorry, but I have to draw the line for me personally somewhere). ;^)

"Taking Credit" - Contribute, and you end up here! Couple side-notes... When the FAQ was hosted by GeoCities, I had to remove the links to individual's auctions to avoid the appearance of doing business. Now that the site's hosted on my own server, I'm going to reinstate them. FAQ questions and answers will receive a credit, but those submitting them won't show up as having "posted" under that section (it's a stylistic decision). Just about all other material WILL show up as a "post" made by you, however. I suppose I should clarify this... If you are simply submitting general ideas and/or suggestions you'll get credited under this section, if you submit an actual "article" it'll appear under the appropriate section with a full simulated "eBay post" header.

I think that's it! Oh, one other thing... I'll accept general comments, suggestions, "Hey FAQ You" Q&A, "Know-It-Alls" submissions, etc. at any time (simply contact me via the email link on the first page of the FAQ... I suppose you can also post to this thread), but I do reserve the right NOT to use ideas or articles and to occasionally edit them with contributor approval. I want to make clear that this isn't MY FAQ, but rather the Comics community's FAQ. But, having said that, I've gotta step in at some point and be the final arbiter of what is and isn't going in there lest it die a slow and grisly death by committee.

Thanks in advance!

Hi Lousguy2000, I can count at least four people on this board, including myself, who have returned to comics after a long hiatus. I'm going on my 4th year back and I don't intend to leave again.

akashoeman, you are a prolific writer. I think the FAQ's consensus grading guide is fantastic. Hopefully some of the new sellers who are using eBay will refer to it as they put together their item descriptions. It will help them sell their books and make them more knowledgeable as collectors/dealers.
