Does this deserve a neutral?

Oct 8, 2009 7:04 PM
I have been looking for a Betty And Me #16 (the Archie with the famous "beat off" cover) for a long time. Recently I won one for $12 in Fine condition from a "buy it now" less than a half hour after it was listed.
I recently saw a VG+ copy go for four times Overstreet on Ebay. I paid by Paypal at once. Now, today I get my money refunded back to me, saying it is out of stock. This deal stinks to me like rotten fish considering this was a "buy it now"- why was it even listed if it wasn't stock in the first place? Naturally, here is the punch line- the seller is a "mile high" if you get what I mean. My first dealings with them. I have heard the negative scuttlebutt here often, but this was such a great deal
I had to jump on it. So I have my money back, but no comic- this deal sucks. Does this deserve a neutral (or worse)?

Neutral, maybe.
Have you checked their online shop to see if they have this particular issue in stock?
If they don't have it in stock even in their online shop then they probably just deserve a neutral..but if they STILL have it, and worse, in that exact grade, then a negative might be in order.
The reason for this is the fact that i too have just bought a bunch of comics from them.
One of the comics i was aiming for, which showed in their eBay store was a Batman # 427 to complete my Death in a Family collection.
It was just sitting there..One copy at VF for $6, i think.
However, due to their "out of stock" disclaimer and their "negatives" due to its "stock" problems, i checked out their online store first.
They didn't have a single copy of Batman # 427 in their online store.
So i just waited patiently for the Batman # 427 listing to end, and sure enough, it wasn't relisted.
Since their eBay store corresponds directly to their main online store, i do believe they can run out of stock here a lot.
Perhaps someone bought that Betty and Me # 16 at their online store but the listing on eBay remained, as it happened with me on the Batman # 427.

Could be, but I am deeply suspicious because I executed the "buy it now" about a half hour after it was listed.

I have had this happen to varying degrees 4 times in
the last couple of months although in an auction situation. Do I think that after the auction end they
received a higher offer? Absolutely. In a buy it now
transaction I think what you have is purely a lack of
quality control and it seems that a lot of the very large
volume sellers do not know day to day what they actually have for sale. When you pay for something
and depending on how long it takes the seller to inform
you that he has absolutely wasted your time what is your evaluation of the transaction experience. I think
a neutral would be very generous.

Mile High sells thousands of comics.

So for one I don't see them doing anything underhanded on a $12 comic - not worth their time.

Also since they list thousands of comics I am sure they are errors and since you bid so soon after it were listed it is conceivable nobody had caught it yet.

All that said only they know.

You got your money back without hassle. I certainly wouldn't consider leaving them a negative. I suppose a neutral could be warranted - again I wouldn't bother, but that's just me.

Some here would say you probably came out ahead as the FN copy you were bidding probably only had half its pages and no back cover.

I would say neutral maybe, but not a negative. I wouldn't say it would be a negative since even though the seller was an arse for listing the item before checking his inventory for it, he still didn't cause any turmoil or to big of a problem concerning the transaction. Its possible but I highly doubt the seller intentional did this, seeing as there's no real way he/she could have befitted from the false listing. It just ended up being a misleading and a big disappointment, after all even though the seller listing the action was unprofessional for a mile high member, the transaction could of been a lot worse.

I know that they are a big company and surely mistakes can be made, but isn't this what the feedback system is supposed to reflect then? It is supposed to be a system which provides other buyer with information about how their own possible transactions might turn out. I am fully aware that in the overall scheme of life, this is at worst a minor annoyance But it was a drag, I get a simple pleasure out of getting a good deal on Ebay once in a while.

Mile High does not list comics, particularely silver age at below market. They're prices on a book like that is almost higher than guide prices, not lower. Check this out. Compare their prices. The owner bosts thsy charge more because they make an effort to stock issues and titles not found elsewhere. So draw your own conclusion.

It seems like there is a pass being given to high volume sellers because they are high volume sellers.
To me a feedback rating is based on the individual
transaction between a buyer and seller and whether
that transaction is positive/neutral/negative. If its poor
to me as a buyer what difference does it make how
much volume the seller does? I would tend to give the
benefit of the doubt to a seller that sells 5 items a year
versus one that sells hundreds of thousands. He knows that the situations occur and has decided even
in spite of past negative feedback that he will just keep
operating as he has in the past and will sell enough so
that the positives outweigh the negatives. Thats fine
if he has enough positives but why should I after a
negative experience not leave negative feedback
about my specific transaction.I do not understand the
rationale.

That cover is funny! Currently, they don't show any in stock in any condition, so maybe they goofed inventory.

"Mile High does not list comics, particularely silver age at below market"

No kidding...Their prices are AT LEAST double the prices here. That's why i only buy moderns to complete certain runs.
And check out their "Buying" prices and compare them to their selling price in the same grade...For example: Their buying price for Avengers # 1 in VG and compare them to what their asking (sale) price for an Avengers # 1 VG.
It's so horrific it's starting to actually become laughable.

The Betty And Me #16 goes for $12 in Fine in Overstreet. However, it is not commonly listed on Ebay, and pretty high in demand, due to its "naughty" cover. The last one I saw a few weeks back went for multiples of Overstreet for a VG+. That's one of the things that galls me so much about this situation. I was getting a good deal.

I don't feel that this deserves a negative. You are out no money and I would give them the benefit of the doubt, it may have been a simple listing error. I think negatives should be reserved for situations where the seller is attempting fraud or is belligerent in dealing with a problem.

Ask them to honor the price on the next issue that becomes available.

Forgot to add.

I have no problem with a neutral in this situation, unless they say "Sure you can have the next one we get in!"

Don't hold your breath, though ....
