HAS EBAY KILLED OFF RETAIL STORES?

Nov 3, 2009 11:37 AM
I'm not thinking of opening one up but I do see a lack of stores to go to. Is this because of Ebay or general disinterest in the hobby. I know the newer comics are high priced and thinner with computer drawn covers making them look cheap... so new comic sales are probaly down but what about stores with just back issues. I know that some stores are mainly doing gaming junk but they are hardly comic stores any more. Anyone know of retail stores doing well... it used to be fun visiting them....

Around where I'm at comic book stores wth the focus on back issues died out long before ebay. The new comic book market is killing comic book stores and is affecting back issue sales, not the other way around. But I will say this: On the rare occasion I go into a comic book store, the nearest to me being across from a community college, it looks pretty busy, so there still is life there.

They have a lot of back issues there and other stores around here do, too, in the Los Angeles area, but they are all old stores, from the 1980's or earlier.

Me personally stopped going to comic stores as much at the same time I stated on ebay (1999).
I completed more of my collection in 1 year on ebay that in 10 years previous going to comic book stores.

Back Issues are often very overpriced at comic book stores. I still remember seeing some very beaten up bronze age avengers in a local shop for 20.00 each. The weekend following, I found a lot of 20 bronze age for about 20 dollars.

Economics is what destroyed the back issue store-front. Rent and the usual expenses can not be sustained by the quarter box. There is limited selection in stock. Everybody thinks that their comics are a gold mine. People will not accept a reasonable price for their books. (That is why eBay is crowded with schlock books.) Then there is competition with shows, conventions, and on-line sales. If you notice, back issues do not even sell well at comic stores that sell new books. You see the same old over-priced silver age books tacked on the wall year after year. At this point I think thatopening any retail store is a big risk.
