How to add an image to your posts...

Aug 28, 2002 2:49 PM
Hi folks!

Sometimes "a picture is worth a thousand words" and as Daphne says, "sometimes it's just fun!" So I thought I would post this information and pin this to the top of the the board for a while to help those who may want to include images in their posts.

You can include an image in your post by following these instructions:

First, you'll need to store your picture file on a web site somewhere. Many Internet Service Providers (ISP) offer their customers web space as part of their Internet service, so you might check to see if you already have space. If you don't, try checking with the Photos/HTML board to learn of free sites where you can store images. Once your image is stored somewhere on the Internet, simply type the following code into the text box when you want to make a post:

****************************

[your.server.name] would be the server your picture is on.
[account_name] is your space on the server
[folder_name] the folder your photos are in (you may or may not have one).
[pic_name.jpg] would be the name of your picture file.

[Please note! This is a non working example. Of course, you would substitute your own URL and image filename for the URL and filename shown above.]

To create a link to the image: Again your image needs to be stored on a web site first. Next, use this code:
To view my image, please click
here! The "here!" becomes a clickable link when you do this.

If you need additional help on adding pictures, I recommend a visit to our Photos/HTML Help board.

Enjoy and have a great day!!! ;0)

How many different picyures can I add to an auction. I dealy I would like to show ten pictures. I want my Comic's individually scanned into a friends scanner so that people can really see the condition of the books. Some of which go for over a hundred dollars, one for about a thousand. Any input on this matter would be greatly appreciated

RichPop, (sorry for the slow response, I'm only rarely here these days) You can add as many images as you want (at least, I've never found a limit yet) the problem is, the more images you put on a single page, the slower that page will load. So the best thing I've found to do is to put your BEST pictures in the description, (3 or 4 tops) and add links to any others.

I hate it when people write in ALL CAPS. I hate it when the something is "written" without any semblance of a sentence.

I'm sorry your wife took you're camera. As trivial as it is, you're in the wrong and you should just get over it.

Cyne-
Though I'm sure that you had no ill intent in doing what you did, "appropriating" other peoples scans is generally considered a serious no-no in the comic world.

The main reason for this is that condition is absolutely a primary consideration to comic collectors and they expect to see an image of the actual comic they are buying. If you are using an image of a copy other than the one you are selling you could potentially run into problems with buyers not being happy with the copy they are sent. Certainly, there are exceptions here with Dutch auctions and the selling of multiple examples within a single auction, but I don't think that's what we are talking about. At very least, you need to put in your auctions that the copy pictured is not the copy you are selling. You are opening yourself up to a lot of headaches the way you are doing things now.

The second issue is image ownership. Somebody did produce that image that you were using in your pulled auction. It may seem silly to hem and haw about a scan of a comic, but it remains the result of someone else's labor that you took without their consent. Also, a buyer who potentially sees the same image in your auction as the other guys is going to question the validity of both auctions. This could detrimentally effect not only your reputation but that of the other seller as well.

If you plan on selling comics on eBay, you need to produce your own images. You can get a really nice scanner for under $100 (which you could also use for scanning cards). Most scanners and digital cameras come with easy to use image applications and eBay makes it quite easy to include images in auctions without having to deal with outside hosting and separate uploads. Many good tutorials can be found on eBay having to do with auction images. Do a bit of searching around and you will see it's really not that hard or costly.

Cyne -

I just have to chime in here on this topic, even though no one will read it probably, judging from the posted dates.

Copying someone else's images in an infringement and a serious issue with eBay; you're lucky all they did was take your auction off. You could have received a warning and been put on notice.

I once found a whole series of listings for a particular printer on eBay (all different sellers) and every one of them had a pirated image from the printer mfgr.'s site. I wrote to a few and they all admitted to it, but didn't seem to realize it was against the rules and just plain wrong.

As you've already been advised, it's not all that hard or expensive to get a scanner or digital camera these days. Hi res expensive cameras are of no use since Net images need to be no more than 40K-50K for acceptable loading. Go for a lower megapixel unit with good glass optics instead.

And, yes, STOP SHOUTING! All caps is shouting, hard to read and really, really annoying. We're all here to help out and answer questions, but you can quickly wear out your welcome here that way.

Good luck. Keep asking questions and you'll get through.

For example:
